Student’s Age: 13 years old Date: 5/12/20 SCHOOL: Navigator Pointe Academy How did you feel when you learned that schools would close because of the COVID-19 pandemic? I was sad when I learned that I wouldn’t be able to go back to school again. I am attending a new school next year, so I will never go back. What do you like the most about online school? I like being able to listen to music while I work, and I don’t have to wake up as early or get ready in the mornings. What do you dislike the most about online school? I dislike not being able to see and talk to friends as much. What do you miss the most about school? Like I said above, I miss my friends and classmates. I won’t get to see them next year and probably never again in my life. These are the people I grew up with. Though I sometimes got annoyed with them, I have learned to get along with them. I will really miss them. How are you connecting with your school friends during the pandemic? Mostly texting. Occasionally we will have facetime or a zoom call, but I still don’t see them much. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES What activities did you do before the pandemic? (Sports, music, etc. Please be specific.) I quit a few of the activities I used to do last year, so really I only had piano lessons. Are you continuing to do them now? If so, how? Do you use a virtual platform? Do you do them as you did before? I still do piano lessons and practice by zoom each week. My sister and I do the same things, but we have to copy our music now and give it to our teacher. What do you miss most about doing these activities in person? I miss talking more to my teacher about our week. We don’t do it as much anymore. I also miss playing on her piano. What do you like most about doing activities online? I like being able to stay home instead of getting in the car and driving there. FAMILY AND HOME What questions do you have about the pandemic? When will I be able to do regular activities again? Will I be able to go to my new school next year at the beginning of the year? How will things change after the pandemic? Will I ever get to go to Oakcrest? What has changed the most in your home because of the pandemic? We have to be by each other all the time. My older sister and I try to hide in our rooms as much as we can. I also try to go outside and swing alone. How do you spend your free time at home? I play a lot of video games or watch TV. Sometimes I play the piano for fun. I also enjoy reading while listening to music. How have you stayed connected to extended family? How has this changed your relationships? We haven’t really stayed that connected. We only have seen our grandparents since the pandemic started. Are you learning new skills because of the pandemic? (Cooking, babysitting, house chores, arts, crafts, etc.?) If so, what are they? Most of the things I do I already know how to do. I am learning how to plant and take care of the garden and how to cook a little. SOCIETY How has the pandemic affected your community? How has it affected our state? People don’t visit each other anymore in my neighborhood. It has affected our state because we can’t go to school or church, so a lot of people just stay home all day. Do you see any positive impacts from the pandemic? Explain… One positive impact is that people are spending more time for family because of having to stay home. Do you see any negative impacts from the pandemic? Explain… There are many negative impacts including not being able to see friends, not being able to participate in normal activities, losing family members, etc. What do you want future generations to know about what it’s like to experience a pandemic? It can be very hard to be away from the entire world. But for me, I feel thankful that I haven’t had COVID-19 yet. I just finished Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. I could find similarities between Anne and me, but also many differences. I kept on thinking of the many ways her life was harder than mine. It made me grateful that I was not in the situation she was in. Be thankful for what you have. |
