Student’s Age: 13 Date: May 4 2020 SCHOOL How did you feel when you learned that schools would close because of the COVID-19 pandemic? I was sad that I wouldn't be able to see most of my friends, but I also was a bit happy that we would get to do school at our own pace. What do you like the most about online school? What I like most about online school is that I can do my stuff at my own pace. What do you dislike the most about online school? It is a bit harder to contact and communicate with my teachers than it would be if I was at class. What do you miss the most about school? I miss my friends and teachers at school. I miss the face-to-face conversations. How are you connecting with your school friends during the pandemic? I like texting them and sometimes just pass them around town and say hi. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES What activities did you do before the pandemic? (Sports, music, etc. Please be specific.) I did a lot of soccer practice for my traveling soccer team before this. I also went to church activities a couple times a week. I would hang out with friends at their homes or my home. Are you continuing to do them now? If so, how? Do you use a virtual platform? Do you do them as you did before? I have stopped all my soccer practices and games, but sometimes I still go on a bike ride with my neighbor friends or just talk with them in our backyards. What do you miss most about doing these activities in person? I would like to play soccer with my friends. What do you like most about doing activities online? I don't really do many activities online except school--just a couple times I have found some classmates to play ShellShockers online after school work was finished. FAMILY AND HOME What questions do you have about the pandemic? I really don't have many questions about it. What has changed the most in your home because of the pandemic? Well we have been able to do a lot of work projects together as a family around the house and we have been able to see our parents a lot more than normal. We go on lunch “field trips” as a break from school work and go hiking for a couple hours sometimes. We also play a lot more card games and board games. We have also started going to the lake a lot earlier in the season to get out of the house. My sister had her 16th birthday while we couldn’t be around other people, so we had a big family celebration that we had a chalk war together. That was a lot of fun How do you spend your free time at home? I really like spending time on my bike or doing things with legos or playing outside. How have you stayed connected to extended family? How has this changed your relationships? We have done some Online Meetings with them on Sundays. Are you learning new skills because of the pandemic? (Cooking, babysitting, house chores, arts, crafts, etc.?) If so, what are they? Well, I do like throwing and catching a Frisbee with my sisters and I have gotten good at throwing it really well. I have gotten better at making lots of crafts. I am going to try wake boarding this summer. SOCIETY How has the pandemic affected your community? How has it affected our state? One thing is all of our social skills are changing a bit. I have noticed that with my friends and family we are getting along a lot better. We have created a rock challenge that we paint and hide rocks and then post pictures to our neighbors so they can find the rocks and rehide them. We also liked doing the Cruising Main event that was organized, and watching all the people that came out and drove on the main road of Vernal. There were classic cars, decorated cars, and lots of people just honking and waving. My mom works for an elementary school and the teachers organized a Teacher Parade to drive through neighborhoods of the students that go to her school. They decorated their cars and honked and waved to them. We also have church at home now. I really like that. Do you see any positive impacts from the pandemic? Explain… Well it has been really nice to just slow down and take a breath from all of the craziness. We have had a lot more family time. Do you see any negative impacts from the pandemic? Explain… Well it has been harder for some people. For example, some people are starting to lose their jobs. There was also a shortage of groceries and paper products for a while, but it seems to be getting better. What do you want future generations to know about what it’s like to experience a pandemic? Well I do wish that if another one of these is going to happen they shouldn't freak out and take all of the things at the store. If everyone isn't taking everything then it should be like normal and there would be enough for everyone. Stay calm. You may include artwork or photographs about how the pandemic has shaped your life here. Insert jpg photos or scans directly into this document. |
