Student’s Age: 16 years old Date: 5/11/20 SCHOOL: Ben Lomond High school How did you feel when you learned that schools would close because of the COVID-19 pandemic? When it was announced that Ogden district schools would be closing due to the CoronaVirus, I was stoke. The first thing I thought was more sleep! But this who online school was just the start to something terrible. What do you like the most about online school? -There wasn’t much to like about online school, besides the fact that you have the ability to schedule when and where you’ll be doing your homework. You plan your own time. What do you dislike the most about online school? -There were so many downfalls about online school, one of these downfalls was having to learn on your own. What do you miss the most about school? -Some things I miss the most about school is interacting with people and just having the ability to learn and participate in class. How are you connecting with your school friends during the pandemic? -I’m sure most of us are keeping in touch with friends by texting or calling, which isn’t very effective. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES What activities did you do before the pandemic? (Sports, music, dance, etc. Please be specific.) -Before this whole pandemic occurred, I was involved with sports such as soccer and working out. I was also involved in clubs where we were scheduled to compete in March but was canceled. Are you continuing to do them now? If so, how? Do you use a virtual platform? Do you do them as you did before? -Unfortunately, I’m unable to participate in any club activities because we cannot meet or compete. However, I continue to train at home. Scheduling my soccer practices and workout sessions throughout the week. Making sure I’m in shape. What do you miss most about doing these activities in person? -What I miss the most about my Skills USA and Clan Chief clubs is interacting with my fellow team and just having a good time. Same implies with soccer and working out. What do you like most about doing activities online? -Scheduling my own plans. FAMILY AND HOME What questions do you have about the pandemic? 1.How long is the pandemic estimated to last 2.Is there a cure, if so how long may it take for it to be publicly used 3.Finally, why isn’t America taking more precaution of this pandemic? It seems as if people don’t care. For instance, citizens in Florida are filling beaches as if there’s no outbreak of a dangerous virus going around killing thousands. Let me just say, what if it was your loved one who tested positive for Covid-19 and they were more prone to die? What has changed the most in your home because of the pandemic? -My family is prohibited to go out unless it's urgent or for work. We have to always always wash our hands, wear masks, and sometimes gloves when out in public. My mother has been super strict since the outbreak but I don’t blame her. This pandemic is super series. It would be super scary for me to carry the virus especially because I have asthma. How do you spend your free time at home? -I spend my free time training or just spending time with my family. How have you stayed connected to extended family? How has this changed your relationships? -I have stayed connected to extended family, therefore, hasn’t been much of a challenge. Are you learning new skills because of the pandemic? (Cooking, babysitting, house chores, arts, crafts, etc.?) If so, what are they? -I’ve learned that I’m totally capable of doing things on my own, specifically school work. When first starting online school I thought it would be impossible and that I would be incapable of doing it all on my own. But so far I’ve proven myself wrong. SOCIETY How has the pandemic affected your community? How has it affected our state? -Due to the pandemic, there is less conversation and interacting with each other. Thus, bringing communities farther apart from each other. How do you think the pandemic might impact your life in the future? -To be completely honest, we are not even completely sure when this pandemic will last. So we may have to continue being less interactive with each other and become more antisocial. Which isn’t always good, being stuck in our houses all day everyday can cause many of us to feel lonely and increase depressing rates. What strengths and weaknesses in our society are being exposed by the pandemic? -I believe that being forced to stay at home allows people to become more connected with family members. However, this pandemic is also affecting the economy negatively and leaving many with no jobs. In which ways has the pandemic affected the economy? -This pandemic has affected the economy tremendously and not in a good way. Economies are going down. They are not making enough money and many individuals are left with no jobs. What do you want future generations to know about what it’s like to experience a pandemic? -Something that I would want future generations to know about this pandemic is to immediately take initiative and precautions of a dangerous virus suddenly appearing in some other country because next thing you know it can spread to your country and later killing thousands. This is important because this is exactly what happened in 2020 Coronavirus outbreak. There were literally red flags everywhere but we didn’t take action. By the time we did it was to late. |
