On funduscopic exam she is noted to have right optic nerve melanocytoma and a normal appearing left optic nerve. Optic nerve melanocytomas are benign pigmented tumor of melanocytes and melanin located in the optic nerve. Considered to be variant of a choroidal nevus, melanocytomas of the optic nerve can vary in size and pigmentation. Commonly, optic nerve melanocytomas are juxtapapillary dark brown or black pigmented lesion with feathered edges as shown in the Figure 1. Vision impairment is variable, although predominantly preserved. In this case, the right optic nerve melanocytoma resulted in vision compromise and optic nerve hypoplasia with a resultant right eye moderate angle exotropia, that did improve with amblyopia therapy. |
