The house originally consisted of eight roor.l~ -a kitchen, dining room, living room, library, and four bedrooms. A privy Kas located behind the house to the east. The brick used ,\'1as of a rich oatmeal color. The follo, dng "changes have been made in the interior. Complete electrification, forced air heating, relocation of a stain\"ay, certain interior \'1alls removed to facilitate use as office space. A previously covered fireplace \\as returned to use, liith new firebrick and da111per added. Casings of fir, \\'hich had deteriorated beyond repair were replaced ,": i tJ'l casings of matching scale. " "" " " " " On the exterior an already existing enclosed back porch as reconstructured and finished \d th ,,"'Ood planking. An enclosed entrance to the basement on the "north side \\'as added to open up that space for corrnnercial use. The hand-made adobe and surface brick "ere chemically cleaned in the fall of 1977, very successfully, and the appearance of the house is anadYertisement for the advantages of this process over sandblasting. " All exterior Hindo\\" frames ,,"ere maintained intact, and repairs "ere "made to soffit and fascia. The roof ,,-as covered in H Cedar shingles. An iron fence, originally made for the Troy Laundry in Salt Lake Ci tr but part of the McDonald home since 19l2~ \\'as carefully rebuilt,reinsta11ed, and painted. All doors are original ,to this structure. The house stands on an important suburban traffic route and is a splendidshm"case for the-' beneficial effects of ca"rcful adapth"e restol"ation. Xot large, but distinctly substantial; not overdecorated, but \,ell-finished enough todra\.; the admiring glances of neighbors. The significance of the ~lcDonald hO::ies lies principally ill its po\\er to tjrpify the ,values of a middle-class newly emerged from the struggles to establish themseh'es in pioneer' society. ' ' . - ' -: TI1e architect-builders ,,'ere the o\\ners, David and Arabella ~IcDonald" 1\'110 lived in the building until their deathin 1924. Davie. a.T1d Arabella remained supportive of the Monnon Church and its various programs, although his ainbivalence about the OlUrch "-as cause for conunent. His membership in the ,largely Gentile Liberal ' party, and the broad and catholic selection of titles in his much-loved library, suggest his distance from the mainstream of ~Ionnon thought al1dpractice. The ~lcfunald blacksmithing business, located eventually only SO feet from the ~lcDonald home, prospered over the years. His increasing stature in the business community led to ~lcDonald's increasing in\'olvement in politics. Kith the introduction of national political parties into Utah, he quickly became established as an active Republican. At the death of both parents in 1924, the home passed into the hands of other members of the family, and e\-entual1y ",as converted into a rental property in 1966. Althoogh ther-brnon Church dominated settlement p:ltterns in Utah, the opening of a federal land office in 1869 brought the scattered horrestead p:lttern to the state. The M::DJnald House exists today in the midst of later twentieth century development, an important rermant of early Cbrrestic architecture outside the imrrediate Salt Lake City area. The house has been carefully restored. The architect-buil<i:!rs were the <Mners, ravid and Arabella M::D:>nald, who lived in the building until their death in 1924. Both were imnigrants to Utah in 1869, he from Scotland and she from l-brthern Ireland, and both were 41 when the hone that was the measure of their success in America was constructed. David M::DJnald had been educated in Scotland, and served five years of apprenticeship as a blacksmith and millwright. It was not until he was settled in utah that he rret his wife Arabella An<i:!rson, whom he rrarried in the Salt lake EhdC1NIttent House in 1874. David and Arabella remained supportive of the r-brnon Churdl and its various prograrrs, although his arrbivalence abrut the Church was cause for comment. His rnenbership in the largely Gentile Liberal party, and the broad and catholic selection of titles in his nuch-loved library suggest his distance fran the mainstream of Mormon thought and practice. The M::DJnald blacksmithing business, located eventually only 50 feet fran the M:Donald hone, prospered over the years. His increasing stature in the business cormunity led to M::DJnald's increasing involverrent in politics. With the introduction of national political parties into utah, he quickly becane established as an active Rep..lblican. At the death of both parents in 1924, the hone passed into the hands of other rren'bers of the family and eventually was converted into a rental property in 1966. ' The architect-builders were theohners, David and Arabella McDonald, who lived in the building ,tmtiltheir death in 1924. Both were immigrants I to Utah in 1869, he from Scotland and she from Northern Ireland, and both were 41 when the home that was the measure of their, success in America was constructed. David M:Donald had been educated in Scotland, and served five years of , '$prerrticeship as' a blacksmithandmilh<;Tight~ It was not until he was settl~din' , Utahthatheniet his wife Arabella Anderson, 'whom he married in the Salt Lake Endo\\lJIlentHouse in 1874. ' David and Arabella remained supportive of the Mormon Church and its various programs, although his ambivalence about the Church was cause for conunent. His membership in the largely Gentile Liberal party, and the broad and catholic selection of titles in his much-loved library, suggest his distance from the mainstream of Monnon thought and practice. The McDonald blacksmithing business, located eventually only SO feet from the McDonald home, prospered over the years. His increasing stature in the business comrrnmity led " to McDonald's increasing involvement in politics. With the introduction of national political parties into Utah, he quickly became established as an active Republican. At the death of both parents in 1924, the home passed into the hands of other members of the family, and eventually was converted into a rental property in 1966. home is now the headquarters of a professional design finn. TOPHLlM ASSOCJ4fES February 27, 1980 Mr. Karl Haglund Utah State Historical Society 307 W. 200 So. Salt Lake City, Utah 84101 Dear Karl: Enclosed are the three prints you requested showing the McDonald/Wagstaff house in various historical poses. No. I, Taken In 1894 shows the original simple structure four years after it was built. The wood fence In front sits In the middle of one present traffic lane. No.2, Taken approximately 1912 shows the 'modernlzatlon' of an added porch. Also shown is the very nice iron fence which was taken from the Troy Laundry in town when it was moved to a different location. The fence may be older than the house. No.3, Taken in July, 1977 shows the Incredibly bad condition of the exterior. It barely begins to tell the story. As I mentioned in our conversatl.on recently, this house Is one of five in the il1111ediate tIolladay area which date prior to 1900. Two of these have been renovated to include modern additions. Only three remain in virtually the same visual condition as when they were built. I hope this Is helpful - please let me know if I can be of further help in getting the acreditation.
