Abstract At iron and steel making works a technology has been needed, which would provide uniform ignition for ignition furnaces of sintering machine, or uniform heating for heating furnaces for hot rolling over a width of 3,000 to 4,000 mm. The former furnace is used for the ignition of coke mixed in raw sinter material to be processed for sintering, and the latter, for the heating of slabs, billets, blooms, or bars for hot rolling. To date, however, these ignition requirements have not been fully met by conventional burners (coaxial burners). This has driven us to create a novel type of burner that not only gives a higher temperature but also affords an uniform temperature distribution. (This burner is referred to as "Line burner".) This burner is capable of combusting all kinds of gases which range from high calorific gases (i.e. LPG) to low calorific gases (i.e. by-product mixed gas with a calorie of 1,800 Kcal/Nm3 -N.T.P.) The ignition device was developed by incorporating the Line burner, and applied to Chiba No. 3 and No. 4 Sintering Plants, resulting in reducing to, half in energy consumption rate, i.e. from conventionally obtained value of 14,000 down to 7,000 Kcal/t-sinter. This paper reports the features and performance of the newly developed burners which were used in an ignition device for sintering.
