Title Single Breath Count as a Measure of Respiratory Function in Patients With Myasthenia Gravis
Creator Shivaa Ramsewak, Sui Wong
Subject Neuro-ophth & Systemic Disease (eg. MS, MG, Thyroid)
Description Myasthenia gravis (MG) can cause respiratory muscle weakness, and so monitoring of respiratory function is an important part of management of patients with MG. This is often done using spirometry, which requires special equipment that needs calibration, and can be dependent on technique. The single breath count (SBC) is an alternative method of assessing respiratory function which can be easily done without any equipment in a face-to-face or virtual setting, and avoids aerosol generation and therefore reduced risk of Covid-19 transmission in the current pandemic. We aimed to determine whether there was any correlation between SBC and spirometry results and whether SBC could be used as an alternative to spirometry in patients with MG.
