POST OFFICE REGULATIONS. POST OFFICE REGULATIONS. EREGISTRATION, RATES OF POSTAGH OF INLAND LETTERS, esse 1. The rate of postage on inland letters is regulated by weight, irrespective of distance; and is as follows :— If paid in advance— 1d, Letters weighing not more thanZoz. -~ = » more than 4 oz. but not exceeding 1 oz. 2d. a a more than 1 oz. % 4 2 OZ. 4d. es “s more than 2 02, x = 3 OZ. 6d. and so on; twopence being charged for every additional ounce. 2, Except on re-directed letters, the postage, if not paid in advance, is double the foregoing ; and if the payment in advancebe insufficient, double the deficiency is charged. An inland letter, for example, weighing more than half ‘an ounce, and not exceeding one ounce, if bearing a penny stamp only, is, on delivery charged twopence. The unpaid additional postage on re-directed letters, however, is not doubled, being the sameas if such postage were prepaid. GENERAL POST OFFICE, Letters for the Evening Mails into the Country, must be put in at the Receiv- ing Houses before half-past Five p.m.; at the Branch Offices before Six; or with anadditional stamp before a quarter to Seven. Letters are received at St. Martin’s-le-Grand only, until Seven, by paying one penny extra; and until halfpast Seven by paying sixpence extra; or by placing stamps to that amount on the letter, extra to the postage. LONDON DISTRICT POST DELIVERIES. Within the Town limits there are 10 deliveries daily ; the first or General despatch is made from St. Martin’s-le-Grand at about 7 30a.m. and the deliveryis generally completed throughout London, by 90’clock. The Second Despatch is made at 9 45 a.m. and consists of Letters posted in London up to 8 30a.m. The next seven despatches are made hourly, viz.—at 12 noon, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 p.m. and include all letters reaching the General Post Office in time for each despatch. Thelast despatch is made at 7 p.m.; and all letters for this delivery should bear the District Initials, to ensure delivery the same evening, As many of the Day Mails from the Provinces arrive at such times that a por- tion onlyof the letters can be included in the next hourlydelivery, those bearing the District Initials are sent out by such delivery, as theyare partly sorted by the Provincial Postmasters, whilst those not having the initials appended to the addresses, and which have to be wholly sorted after their arrival in London, are forwarded by a subsequent despatch. By the prepaymentof a fee of sixpence* any letter, book, or other packet on which the postage has been prepaid in stamps, maybe registered. This will make its transmission moresecure by rendering it practicable to trace it, when inland, from its receipt to its delivery ; and whenforeign or colonial, if not to its delivery, at least to the port of despatch. The Post Office does not guarantee the safe delivery of the letter, &c., though the officers are of course responsible to the Postmaster-General, who will call to strict account any one neglecting his duty on this point, and, if his Lordship think proper, will require him to make good anyloss that may be sustained thereby. Every letter to be registered should not be dropped into the letter-box, but be presented at the windowand receipt obtained for it, MONEY ORDERS, AMOUNT AND FEES, Orders upon any post town can be obtained for three-pence for £ 2, or any sum under ; and for £5 and under, six-pence. Nosingle orderis given for sums above that amount ; but larger sums can be sent in several £5 orders, which may be had of all Postmastersin England, and from the Receivers in London, more than three miles from the Central Office, between nine in the morning and six in the evening, But at the chief offices in Dublin, Edinburgh, and Aldersgate-street, London, and the offices three miles around it, they can only be had or paid between ten and four o’clock, BOOK POSTAGE, A book, or any number of books, publications, or works of literature or art (including stamped newspapers published more than fifteen days, and unstamped newspapers of any date), either in a cover, or in a cover openat the ends, provided that the packet do not exceed 2 feet in length, may be transmitted by post within the United Kingdom at the following rates :— 4 oz, and under .., 1d. 8 oz. a 2d, 16 oz.
