Summary Paragraph The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is a I Yl-story period cottage with English Tudor and eclectic Swiss/Gennan period cottage stylistic details. The house is located at 187 East 5600 South, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah. It was built in 1936 by Alfred Huetter. The house has a timber-framed stucco exterior on a concrete foundation. The house exterior has had no modifications. The interior of the house retains most of its architectural details but has been partially remodeled. The house is located on a 0.45acre parcel and there are no associated outbuildings. The immediate neighborhood is commercial to the west and residential to the east. The Huetter House retains its architectural integrity in design, materials, workmanship, location, association and feeling. The setting has been somewhat compromised by the adjacent commercial properties to the west. The property meets the registration requirements of the Historic Resources ofMurray City, Utah, 1859-1967 Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS) within the Residential Buildings and Associated Secondary Buildings/Structures property type category. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is a contributing historic resource in its Murray neighborhood. I The cottage has unique features of its German heritage, including rough finished stucco over timber framing, a steeply pitched roof line, a single central chimney, and square, small multi-paned wood casement windows and French doors .2 The German style varied from the visually similar English Tudor style in that none of the timber members are visible. The timber framing is part of the structure and does not appear in the ornamentation. The front of the house features wood casement windows and doors that are typical of the Germanic style, but the house lacks ornate brick or bargeboards. The styles overlap with multi-paned windows and arched openings over front windows and porch.3 The swooped porch roof reflects English Tudor styling The front (south) facing elevation has a large steeply pitched roof with gables on each end. The fac;:ade has a large projecting stucco gable with a small, arched multi-paned window on the second story and a large single-paned window with views from the living room . The front porch gable steps further out from the larger front gable and contains an asymmetrical swooping roofline that ties the ground plane into the porch level. The porch has a front-facing arched entry and another arched entry on the east that allows access to a small concrete porch, which can also be accessed by French-style doors on the right side of the fac;:ade. The front door is an original wood eleven-panel door with no window. All of the windows are original, including a ten-paned storm door on the exterior of the French-style doors. The east elevation is a two-story tall stucco wall with four windows fairly evenly spaced on the main floor and two side-by-side windows on the second story. There are a few small cracks in the stucco. All windows are double-hung multi-casement and have removable storm windows , which are flush with the house exterior. A triangular wood attic vent is visible above the second story windows near the gable top. The windows and attic have small stucco sills. The west elevation is a similar two-story stucco wall , with three windows along the main floor, two sideby-side windows on the second story, and a triangular attic vent. The west fac;:ade has two windows with storm coverings which open into the basement. The windows are below grade level and have small concrete-lined egress openings. The rear (north) elevation has a rear entry door with a seven-panel storm door. This door is also original paneled wood. The main floor has three windows which mirror the windows on the east and west elevations, including two of similar size and one smaller window probably opening from the bathroom. There is a small gable dormer which penetrates the roof and .does not extend to the ground. The donner has a single double-hung multi-light window with storm-window cover. , Pett, Kathleen (daughter of Alfred and Hennie Huetter) interview with Angie Abram, March 9, 2016. 2 Massey, James. The upper half story has 512 square feet. 4 The floors are wood plank and walls are lathe and plaster with moderate wood trim door casements and base molding. The kitchen and bath have been remodeled after 2005. The concrete basement was hand-poured and troweled by Alfred Huetter. The house was originally heated by coal which was later converted to gas heat. 5 Setting/Site The house sits on a 0.45-acre parcel with another house to the east built in 1946 by Alfred Huetter for Hennie Huetter's mother, August Beckmann. Prior to 1945, Augusta Beckmann lived in another house to the west of 187 East 5600 South, which was demolished. 6 The property is rectangular and has two mature trees in front and behind the house and trees along the west lot boundary. The house previously had a mill and garage on the property which have been demolished. The house is just above commercial buildings along State Street (100 East) and is the western-most boundary of a residential area with 19001930 homes along 5600 South and subdivision infill dating from the 1950s and 1960s. 4 Salt Lake County tax records and Salt Lake County assessor parcel viewer. 5 Pett interview. 6 Ibid . The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House, built in 1936, is a I Yz -story period revival-style, stucco cottage, located at 187 E. 5600 South in Murray, Utah. The house is locally significant under Criteria A and C in the areas of Commerce and Architecture. Under Criterion A, the house was associated with the Huetter Mill during the period of significance from 1936 to 1952. The Huetter Mill was one of the first large commercial enterprises in south Murray in the 1920s to 1950s. The wood mill building no longer exists, but the house is a reminder of the growth of the Huetter Mill, which is still in business today, although at a new location. During the early years, many of the administrative functions of the mill were conducted in the house. The house is locally significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture as a rare hybrid of the English Tudor and the Swiss/German period cottage in Utah. The house was constructed by its owner, Alfred Huetter, a Gennan immigrant, who was a formerly trained carpenter. Mr. Huetter adapted elements of his native German training with the English Tudor Cottage, which was immensely popular in America in the 1930s. The property has excellent historic integrity with some minor modifications to the interior. The property is eligible within the Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS), Historic Resources of Murray City, 1859-1967. Because the Murray MPS is organized by building types, the associated historic context is the "Americanization of Murray ' s Residential Architecture, 1902-1965 ." Narrative Statement of Significance (Provide at least one paragraph for each area of significance.) Historical Significance Like most of the United States, the residents of Murray did not build much during the depression years of the 1930s. The city of Murray and the state of Utah did benefit from a number of New Deal programs. The city directories lists only one or two cabinet makers in Murray from the 1920s to the 1960s. With the exception of the Huetter Mill, none have survived to the present. The house property's association with the Huetter Mill represents a significant story in the history of Murray in the area of Commerce. Alfred Huetter was a trained carpenter when he immigrated from Gennany in 1925. He started his own cabinet making business soon after his arrival. He married Hennie Beckman in 1935 and began working on the house at 187 E. 5600 South, on property deeded from this mother-in-law, August Beckman. After completing construction of the house, Augusta and Hennie helped finance Alfred Huetter to construct a cabinet and woodworking shop behind the house at 187 East 5600 South, originally from a converted chicken coop. This business became Huetter Mill and Cabinet. The intersection of 5600 South and State Street was mostly rural at the time. There were very few businesses aside from dairy farms and livestock processing. Between 1930 and 1940, the only other businesses were a sewing machine repair shop and a service station. Aside from the Huetter Mill, the only other cabinet maker during this era was located in the commercial business district near 4800 South and State Street. These businesses lasted only a couple of years and were not as successful as the Huetter Mill. Section 8 page 9 United States Department of the Interior National Park Service / National Register of Historic Places Registration Form NPS FOnTl 10-900 OMB No. 1024-0018 Huetter, Alfred & Hennie, House Name of Property Salt Lake County, Utah County and State Alfred Huetter ran the mill behind the Huetter House from the late 1930s through 1952 and then moved the operation to 5805 South State Street, Murray, Utah. 7 During the early years, Hennie helped run the business and some administrative work was done in the house. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House parcel was the original location of a significant local business, Huetter Mill and Cabinet, which continues in business in Murray to this day. Huetter Mill and Cabinet specializes in stair parts, custom millwork and cabinets. It is currently located at 4730 S. Riverside Drive.8 Architectural Significance The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is locally significant as a rare example of English Tudor and Swiss/German cottage architecture in Murray built in 1936. The house was constructed by Alfred Huetter, a formally trained German carpenter who immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1925.9 The cottage was built with timber framing, which was unusual for the period. 10 The timber framing is not expressed on the exterior, either in actual visible members or in the faux half-timbering typically seen in English Tudor period-revival cottages in the Utah. The use of structural timber in the 1930s is significant in contrast to the rise of mass-produced tract housing that began in the first half of twentieth century. There are several unique, albeit modest, features of its German heritage, including rough finished stucco over the timber framing, a single central chimney, a steeply pitched roof line that is mimicked in the asymmetrical entrance gable with a slight upcurve on one side. The narrow, multi-paned wood casement windows and doors are a significant part of the Gennanic tradition, and notable during this period when multi-paned metal casement windows were gaining in popularity for similar period revival cottages. The house is in excellent condition and retains its original exterior appearance and integrity. Alfred Huetter ran a milling company on his property and it is likely some of the features of the house were milled on site. The English Tudor style was popular in Utah between 1920 and 1940. A database of architectural resources maintained by the Utah SHPO has identified over 7,000 period revival cottages in Utah. The majority of those are brick English-style cottages. It was especially popular with returning World War I veterans after their experiences in Europe. Stucco examples are relative uncommon, and even more rare are example that have German or Swiss features. A few Swiss-style pioneer-era houses are found in small towns like Midway in Utah and the Swiss-Chalet style was popular with Ranch houses of the midtwentieth century. The Huetter House is the rare example that falls between the two periods. The Huetter House is one of twenty significant and twenty-one contributing period cottage houses in Murray, Utah. It is one of only two cottages which have only stucco exteriors without additional brick, timber or siding details. \I Additional Historic Context Daniel Welch received the patent December 1, 1874 for the east half of the northwest quarter and lot number one of Section 18, Township 2 North, Range 1 East where this lot is situated. 12 His family owned the parcel until 1900 when Walter Welch sold the lot on January 17, 1900 to George Granter. The property was quickly and repeatedly sold when Soren and Emma Kankelborg sold the lot to James and Lois Lowe on January I, 1910, who further sold it to Luther T and Sadie Wakeham September 1,1911. On April 14, 1925, Sadie Wakeham sold Karl Beckmann a lot 376.86' deep by 198 ' wide from the larger parcel. 13 Karl and Augusta Beckmann initially lived in a house on the lot located at 181 East 5600 South. Karl , his wife Augusta Kerksiek Beckmann, and daughter Hennie had immigrated to West Jordan, Utah from Bielefeld, North Rhein-Westphalia, Germany in 1914. Karl and Augusta had another daughter and three sons after arriving in Utah. Karl was a shoemaker by trade and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Karl died January 17, 1927, leaving Augusta with five small children. Augusta raised her children in the house at 181 East 5600 South, Murray. 14 On December 15, 1936 Augusta sold the current parcel to her oldest daughter Hennie, who had married Alfred Huetter on May 15, 1935. 15 Alfred Huetter was born in Weil am Rhein, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany July 17, 1906. Alfred Huetter attended elementary school until eighth grade, when he was apprenticed as a carpenter and practiced that trade until he emigrated from Germany to Salt Lake City in 1925 at age 20. 16 He started a carpentry business soon after he arrived in Utah. Alfred Huetter constructed the house in the style he had learned from practicing carpentry in Southern Germany. Alfred and Hennie Huetter lived in the house and had three children, Robert, Kathleen and Gordon Huetter. 17 In 1945, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owned a parcel with a grain elevator directly west of the parcel, contracted to purchase part of the lot to expand their operation. The house at 181 East 5600 South was demolished and Alfred constructed a new, small cottage at 189 East 5600 South for Augusta Beckmann, who lived there until her death December 10, 1961 .18 Hennie and Alfred divorced in 1958, and Alfred moved to an apartment over the business at 5805 South State. Hennie and her three children continued to live at the house. Alfred Huetter married Lisa Kleinberg in 1959. He owned and operated Huetter Mill and Cabinet from its founding until his death April 16, 1969. Alfred Huetter was a member of the Murray Kiwanis Club, the Ambassador Athletic Club, and the Woodworkers Association. Hennie Beckman Huetter lived in the house until 2005, shortly before her death on February 17,2006. In addition to doing the bookkeeping for the Huetter Mills, Hennie worked at LaRies Dress Shop in Murray and later in the business office of J.C. Penney's. She was a member of the Murray Women 's Club for 50 years. Hennie's son Robert sold the house December 30,2005 to the current owners Vicki W. and David J. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is a one and one-half story period cottage with English Tudor and eclectic period cottage stylistic details. The house is located at 187 East 5600 South, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah and was built in 1936 by Alfred Huetter. The house is tiiRb'Mzfreme~ stucco exterior on a concrete foundation. The house exterior has had no modifications and is in excellent condition. The interior of the house retains most of its architectural details, but has been partially remodeled. The house is located on a.45 acre parcel and there are no associated outbuildings. The immediate neighborhood is commercial to the west and residential to the east. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House retains its architectural integrity and is a significant local contributing resource. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is a rare example of Swiss/German cottage architecture constructed by Alfred Huetter, a formally trained German carpenter who immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1925. 1 The cottage has unique features of its German heritage, including rough finished stucco over timber framing, a steeply pitched roof line, a single central chimney, and square, small multi-paned casement windows. 2 The German style varied from the visually similar English Tudor style in that none of the timber members were visible, the windows were not tall and narrow and there were no decorative or ornate brick or bargeboards. The styles overlap with multi-paned windows and arched openings over front windows and porch.3 The swooped porch roofreflects English Tudor styling The front (south) facing f~e has a large steeply pitched roofwith gables on each end. The front has a large projecting stucco gable with a small, arched multi-paned window on the second story and a large single paned window with views from the living room. The front porch gable steps further out from the larger front gable and contains an asymmetrical swooping roofline that ties the ground plane into the porch level. The porch has a front facing arched entry and another arched entry on the east which allows access to a small concrete porch which can also be accessed by French-style doors on the right side of the fa~e. The front door is an original wood eleven panel door with no window. All of the windows are original, including a ten-paned storm door on the exterior of the French-style doors. f~ade The east f~e is a two-story tall stucco wall with four windows fairly evenly spaced on the main floor and two side-by-side windows on the second story. There are a few small cracks in the stucco. All windows are double-hung multi-casement and have removable storm windows, which are flush with the house exterior. A triangular wood attic vent is visible above the second story windows near the gable top. The windows and attic have small stucco sills. The west fa~e is a similar two-story stucco wall, with three windows along the main floor, two side-by-side windows on the second story, and a triangular attic vent. The west f~ade has two windows with storm coverings which open into the basement. The windows are below grade level and have small concrete-lined egress openings. Pett, Kathleen (daughter of Alfred and Hennie Huetter) interview with Angie Abram, March 9, 2016. Massey, James. Germanic Houses in the New World, Old House Journal online. 3 Carter, Thomas, Utah's Historic Architecture, 1847-1940, pg. 156. 1 2 The rear (north) fa~ade has a rear entry door with a seven panel storm door. This door is also original paneled wood. The main floor has three windows which mirror the windows on the east and west facades, including two of similar size and one smaller window probably opening from the bathroom. There is a small gable dormer which penetrates the roof and does not extend to the ground. The dormer has a single double-hung multi-light window with storm-window cover. The interior contains 960 square feet on the main floor and a full finished basement. 5 The house sits on a .45 acre parcel with another house to the east built in 1946 by Alfred Huetter for Hennie Huetter's mother, August Beckmann. The house is just above commercial buildings along State Street (100 East) and is the western-most boundary of a residential area with 1900-1930 homes along 5600 South and subdivision infill dating from the 1950s and 1960s. Karl, his wife Augusta Kerksiek Beckmann, and daughter Hennie had immigrated to West Jordan, Utah from Bielefeld, North Rhein-Westphalia, Germany in 1914. Karl and Augusta had another daughter and three sons after arriving in Utah. Karl was a shoemaker by trade and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Karl died January 17, 1927, leaving AUFta with five small children. Augusta raised her children in the house at 181 East 5600 South, Murray. On December 15, 1936 Augusta sold the current parcel to her oldest daughter Hennie, who had married Alfred Huetter on May 15, 1935. 10 Alfred Huetter was born in Weil am Rhein, BadenWurttemberg, Germany July 17, 1906. Alfred Huetter attended elementary school until eighth grade, when he was apprenticed as a carpenter and practiced that trade until he emigrated from Germany to Salt Lake City in 1925 at age 20. 11 Alfred Huetter constructed the house in the style he had learned from practicing carpentry in Southern Germany. Alfred and Hennie Huetter lived in the house and had three children, Robert, Kathleen and Gordon Huetter. 12 After completing construction of the house, Augusta and Hennie helped finance Alfred Huetter to construct a cabinet and woodworking shop behind the house at 187 East 5600 South. This business became Huetter Mill and Cabinet. Alfred Huetter ran the mill behind the Huetter House from the late 1930s through 1952 and then moved the operation to 5805 South State Street, Murray, Utah.13 In 1945, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who owned a parcel with a grain elevator directly west of the parcel, contracted to purchase part of the lot to expand their operation. The house at 181 East 5600 South was demolished and Alfred constructed a new, small co~e at 189 East 5600 South for Augusta Beckmann, who lived there until her death December 10, 1961. 1 IS Hennie and Alfred divorced in 1958, and Alfred moved to an apartment over the business at 5805 South State. Hennie and her three children continued to live at the house. Hennie lived in the house until 2005, shortly before her death February 17,2006. Hennie's son Robert sold the house December 30, 2005 to the current owners Vicki W and David J. Mackay. Summary Paragraph The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is a 1%-story period cottage with English Tudor and eclectic Swiss/German period cottage stylistic details. The house is located at 187 East 5600 South, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah. It was built in 1936 by Alfred Huetter. The house has a timberframed stucco exterior on a concrete foundation. The house exterior has had no modifications and is in excellent condition. The interior of the house retains most of its architectural details but has been partially remodeled. The house is located on a 0.45-acre parcel and there are no associated outbuildings. The immediate neighborhood is commercial to the west and residential to the east. The Huetter House retains its architectural integrity in design, materials, workmanship, location, association and feeling. The setting has been somewhat compromised by the adjacent commercial properties to the west. The property meets the registration requirements of the Historic Resources of Murray City, Utah, 1859-1967 Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS) within the Residential Buildings and Associated Secondary Buildings/Structures property type category. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is a contributing historic resource in its Murray neighborhood. The styles overlap with multi-paned windows and arched openings over front windows and porch.3 The swooped porch roof reflects English Tudor styling The front (south) facing fa~de has a large steeply pitched roof with gables on each end. The front fa~de has a large projecting stucco gable with a small, arched multi-paned window on the second story and a large single-paned window with views from the living room. The front porch gable steps further out from the larger front gable and contains an asymmetrical swooping roofline that ties the ground plane into the porch level. The porch has a front-facing arched entry and another arched entry on the east that allows access to a small concrete porch, which can also be accessed by French-style doors on the right side of the fa~de. The front door is an original wood eleven-panel door with no window. All of the windows are original, including a ten-paned storm door on the exterior of the French-style doors. The east fa~de is a two-story tall stucco wall with four windows fairly evenly spaced on the main floor and two side-by-side windows on the second story. There are a few small cracks in the stucco. All windows are double-hung multi-casement and have removable storm windows, which are flush with the house exterior. A triangular wood attic vent is visible above the second story windows near the gable top. The windows and attic have small stucco sills. The west fa~de is a similar two-story stucco wall, with three windows along the main floor, two side-by-side windows on the second story, and a triangular attic vent. The west fa~de has two windows with storm coverings which open into the basement. The windows are below grade level and have small concrete-lined egress openings. The rear (north) fa~de has a rear entry door with a seven-panel storm door. 1 Pett, Kathleen (daughter of Alfred and Hennie Huetter) interview with Angie Abram, March 9, 2016. 2 Massey, James. The upper half story has 512 square feet. 4 The floors are wood plank and walls are lathe and plaster with moderate wood trim door casements and base molding. The kitchen and bath have been remodeled after 2005. The concrete basement was hand-poured and troweled by Alfred Huetter. The house was originally heated by coal which was later converted to gas heat. s SETTING/SITE The house sits on a 0.45-acre parcel with another house to the east built in 1946 by Alfred Huetter for Hennie Huetter's mother, August Beckmann. The house is just above commercial buildings along State Street (100 East) and is the westem-most boundary of a residential area with 1900-1930 homes along 5600 South and subdivision infill dating from the 1950s and 1960s. 4 Salt Lake County tax records and Salt Lake County assessor parcel viewer. 5 Pett interview. 8 Ibid. The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House, built in 1936, is a 1Y2-story period revival-style , stucco cottage , located at 187 E. 5600 South in Murray, Utah. The house is locally significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture as a rare hybrid of the English Tudor and the Swiss/German period cottage in Utah . The house was constructed by its owner, Alfred Huetter, a German immigrant, who was a formerly trained carpenter. Mr. Huetter adapted elements of his native German training with the English Tudor Cottage, which was immensely popular in America in the 1930s. The period of significance is the date of construction: 1936. The property has excellent historic integrity with some minor modifications to the interior. The property is eligible within the Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS) , Historic Resources of Murray City, 1859-1967. Because the Murray MPS is organized by building types, the associated historic context is the "Americanization of Murray's Residential Architecture, 1902-1965." Narrative Statement of Significance (Provide at least one paragraph for each area of significance.) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ALFRED AND HENNIE HUETTER HOUSE The Alfred and Hennie Huetter House is locally significant as a rare example of English Tudor and Swiss/German cottage architecture which was constructed by Alfred Huetter, a formally trained German carpenter who immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1925. 7 The cottage has unique features of its German heritage, including rough finished stucco over timber framing, a steeply pitched roof line, a single central chimney, and square, small multi-paned casement windows. A few Swiss-style pioneerera houses are found in small towns like Midway in Utah and the Swiss-Chalet style was popular with Ranch houses of the mid-twentieth century. The Huetter House is the rare example that falls between the two periods. The Huetter House is one of twenty significant and twenty-one contributing period cottage houses in Murray, Utah . It is one of only two cottages which have only stucco.exteriors without additional hrick .timber or sirlina rletails.8 . . . I don't see mudj difference between this-house ana tne Srrllfli house. You lou~hl lg fi tly on the rough stucco and timber framing , but It pretty much looks like any other stucco cottage from the era . Is it real timber framing? If not, I would describe it with different terms. You will have to provide much more detail if you want to argue architectural Significance . It might be better to go with Crit. George Granter lived on the property for eight years and then on December 23, 1908, sold it to Soren and Emma Kankelborg . The property was quickly and repeatedly sold when Soren and Emma Kankelborg sold the lot to James and Lois Lowe on January 1, 1910, who further sold it to Luther T and Sadie Wakeham September 1, 1911. On April 14, 1925, Sadie Wakeham sold Karl Beckmann a lot 376 .86' deep by 198' wide from the larger parcel. 10 Karl and Augusta Beckmann initially lived in a house on the lot located at 181 East 5600 South. Karl, his wife Augusta Kerksiek Beckmann, and daughter Hennie had immigrated to West Jordan , Utah from Bielefeld, North Rhein-Westphalia, Germany in 1914. Karl and Augusta had another daughter and three sons after arriving in Utah. Karl was a shoemaker by trade and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Karl died January 17, 1927, leaving Augusta with five small children . Augusta raised her children in the house at 181 East 5600 South, Murray.11 On December 15, 1936 Augusta sold the current parcel to her oldest daughter Hennie, who had married Alfred Huetter on May 15, 1935. 12 Alfred Huetter was born in Weil am Rhein, BadenWurttemberg , Germany July 17, 1906. ~ Huetter attended elementary school until eighth grade, when he was apprenticed as a carpenter and practiced that trade until he emigrated from Germany to Salt Lake City in 1925 at age 20 . 13 He started a carpentry business soon after he arrived in Utah . ~ Huetter constructed the house in the style he had learned from practicing carpentry in Southern Germany. Alfred and Hennie Huetter lived in the house and had three children , Robert, Kathleen and Gordon Huetter. 14 After completing construction of the house, Augusta and Hennie helped finance Alfred Huetter to construct a cabinet and woodworking shop behind the house at 187 East 5600 South, originally from a converted chicken coop.
