OMS No. 1024-0018, NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. Z Page 1 Walbeck, Glen M, & Roxie, House, Draper, Salt Lake County, UT Narrative Description The Glen M. and Roxie Walbeck House was 6uilt in phases between circa 1935 and 1952. The earliest portion was built around 1935 as a one-story rectangular cottage covered with narrow clapboards. The fayade was symmetrical and the windows were multi-pane wood sash windows. Sometime between 1949 and 1952, the house was expanded and completely remodeled. l The current appearance of the house, with its asbestos shingles and picture windows, retains the look ofthe early ranch-style of the 1950s. There is also a contributing 1952 cinder-block garage behind the house and remnants of several chicken coops (1943-1954) at the rear of the property. The remnants of the coops do not have sufficient integrity to be contributing buildings. The Walbeck House is located at 12875 S. Boulter Street. Boulter Street is often noted as 1480 East in current and historical records. The house faces Boulter Street to the west. The house is covered with white asbestos shingles. The gable trim consists of clapboards in a dark red color. The asphalt roof shingles are also reddish in color. The raised foundation is concrete. The north side of the fayade features a projecting wing with a simple gable. In the center is a picture window with smaller panes on either side. The sill consists of a course of rowlock brick. The brick is striated and dark red in color. The porch extends to the south. The deck and steps are concrete with wrought-iron rails and posts (painted red). There is a shed roof sheltering the entrance, but an aluminum awning shelters the rest of the porch. The front door features three wedged-shaped windows arranged fanlike. The living room window is also a large picture window with a brick sill. On the north elevation, the footprint has been extended at the east corner (circa 1949 -1952). There is a small concrete deck, which is accessed by three-quarter-glass double doors. The rails and awning are similar to the front porch. A tall brick chimney stack is on this elevation in front of the deck. There is another brick chimney in the center of the roof. The north elevation features one double-hung window on the main level and one basement window. The south elevation has two main level windows (sheltered by al uminum awnings) and two basements windows. There is a lean-to addition (circa 1950) at the rear, where a side door opens onto a small concrete stoop. A simple gable roof shelters this entrance. On the rear (east) elevation has a projecting wing with a simple gable roof, which appears to have been the porch of the older house. The back door is half-glass and at grade level. There is a large window in the projecting wing and double-hung windows to the north. There are also several basement windows. The covered patio was built in 1963. On the interior, the house has approximately 1,248 square feet of space on the main floor (a doubling of the original house, which had 624 square feet). The living room is in the front and the kitchen is inthe projecting wing at the southeast corner. Bedrooms are located in the north portion. The basement is fully excavated, but partially finished. The current parcel is a deep rectangular lot of 0.42 acres. The original acreage was larger, but has been divided several times with newer homes located in the rear and accessed by Winter Glen Lane, which runs along the south side of the property. The 1952 cinderblock garage is behind the house. It is a double-garage with a simple gable roof. The doors are wood with six-inset windows. There are windows jn the sides and a door at the northeast corner. Behind the garage are the remnants of the chicken coops, built between 1943 and 1952. An early tax photograph shows the original house with a similar chimney and foundation, and the surrounding trees, but most of the rest of the earlier house was altered beyond recognition. 1 OMB No. 1024-0018, NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No, Z Page ~ Walbeck, Glen M, & Roxie, House, Draper. Salt Lake County, UT Narrative Statement of Significance The Glen M. and Roxie Walbeck House, built in phases between circa 1935 and 1952, is a one-story early ranch-style house located at 12875 S. Boulter Street in Draper, Utah. The house is sjgnificant for its association with the peak of the poultry industry in Draper in the mid-twentieth century. The property is eligible within the Multiple Property Submission: Historic and Architectural Resources of Draper, Utah, 1849- J954. The associated historic context is the "Twentieth-Century Community Development and the Poultry Industry Period, 1918-1954." Members of the Walbeck family were among the numerous second and third-generation Draper residents who engaged in small-scale poultry production as a means to supplement their income. Glen M. Walbeck received the land from his mother, Eunice Brown Walbeck, a daughter of Ebenezer Brown, Draper' s first settler. Glen M. Walbeck had a varied career as a coal miner and pro-baseball player before settling down in his hometown with his wife Roxie in the 1930s. In the 1940s and early 1950s, the Walbecks, like many of their neighbors, built several chicken coops in the rear of their property and participated in Draper' s cooperative egg economy toward the latter part of this contextual era. The Walbeck House is a contributing historic resource in Draper, Utah. History of the Glen M. and Roxie Walbeck House The first recorded deed to the Boutler Street land was from members of the Stringfellow family to William John Terry in 1889. William John Terry (1856-1935) later sold two parcels to Alexander Walbeck in 1894 and 1899. After Alex Walbeck' s death, the land was deeded to his wife Eunice Brown Walbeck. In March 1937, Eunice Walbeck deeded the property to her son, Glen M. Walbeck. According to the tax records, the house was built just prior to this transaction. Eunice Brown was born in Draper on October 20, 1865, to Ebenezer Brown (1901-1878) and his third wife, Eliza Samantha Pulsipher (1837-1877). Eunice Brown married Alexander William Walbeck on March 22, 1883 . Alex Walbeck was born in Sweden on October 23 , 1859. The family moved 1:0 Arizona between 1884 and 1889. They bought the Boulter Street property in 1894. Eunice and Alex had ten children, eight of whom lived to maturity. Alex Walbeck died on July 28, 1920. Her oldest daughter Nora also died in 1920, leaving three children. As a result Eunice Walbeck became very self-sufficient and worked in both the Draper cannery and the sugar factory in Payson, Utah. In 1937, she deeded a portion of her property to her youngest son, Glen Mervin Walbeck. Eunice Brown Walbeck died on May 8, 1950. Glen Mervin Walbeck was born on May 4, 1901 , in Draper. He was known at various times as Glen, Mervin, Merv, or most commonly Wally. Glen Walbeck grew up in Draper, but as a young man moved to central Utah to be a coal miner. He married Roxie Larson on November 14, 1928. Roxie Leadrue Larson was born in Cleveland, Emery County, Utah, on June 27, 1908. The couple are listed on the 193() census enumeration living in Spring Canyon, Carbon County, Utah. Glen was working in a coal mine. The family moved to Draper in the mid-1930s. They had three children. The tax records indicate the clapboard cottage was built in 1935. The house was expanded and remodeled sometime between 1949 and 1952, most likely in 1950 when a large mortgage ($3 ,500) was taken out on the property. It is not known how soon after their move to Draper that the OMB No. 1024-0018. NPS Fonn United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. §. Page £ Walbeck, Glen M. & Roxie, House, Draper, Salt Lake County, UT Walbeck began poultry production. They remodeled an old chicken coop in 1943, built two new ones in 1946, and another in 1952. The Walbeck family business corresponds to the peak of the Draper poultry industry in the mid-twentieth century. The Draper poultry industry officially began in 1918 when eight fanners began to work co-operatively to buy feed and market eggs. Daylight-savings time, approved by Congress on March 19, 1918, may have helped the Draper chicken business: "In winter months night lights were turned on in coops to give chickens more time to eat mash, wheat, calcite, and drink the continuous flow ofwater.,,2 In 1926, Draper Poultrymen Incorporated was organized. By the time of the 1930 census enumeration, the poultry business had grown so fast that over 90 workers were listed in the poultry industry. Draper' s poultry business thrived despite a general downturn in the economy during the depression years. But the business was not without risks. In 1932, a disease went through chicken fanns in Draper and wiped out entire flocks. Some producers lost everything and gave up the idea of producing and selling eggs. 3 That year, the Draper Egg Producers Association was organized when several egg producers formed their own co-operative called the Utah Poultry and Farmers Co-Operative. During the first half of the twentieth century, Draper was known as the "Egg Basket of Utah" mostly due to marketing copy such as "Egg Basket Quality Snow White Eggs" produced and packed by the Draper Egg Producers Association. Draper' s co-operative egg economy was so successful that community leaders from throughout Utah visited Draper and used it for a model for co-operatives in their communities. The city gained national prominence when eggs from Draper were shipped to servicemen overseas during World War II. According to one Draper historian, at one point, "almost everyone had chickens," a fact nearly collaborated by Draper' s numerous poultry-related outbuildings. 4 The Walbecks were no exception. Glen "Wally" Walbeck died on March 4, 1964. In addition to the traditional obituary, there was also special notice of his passing in the Sports section of the Salt Lake Tribune : Utah's baseball fans who harken back to the good old days were saddened Wednesday at t.lte passing of Wally Walbeck, one of the more prominent native sons in the game. A one-time professional who climbed as far as the Pacific Coast League, Walbeck was noted for his keen eye at the plate and his ability to chose [sic] the choice pitches. He criss-crossed the state as a player and manager in the various semipro leagues and was active with Helper, Provo, Pinney Beverage among others. 5 Roxie Walbeck survived him by many years. She died on July 8, 2000. The property passed to her son, Daryl . Glen Walbeck, and from him to the current owner Amber Walbeck in 2004. 2 3 4 5 History of Draper, Utah, Volume Two, 251 . NPS Fonn United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. Z Page 1 Walbeck, Glen M. & Roxie, House, Draper, Salt Lake County, UT Narrative Description The Glen M. and Roxie Walbeck House was built in phases between circa 1935 and 1952. The earliest portion was built around 1935 as a one-story rectangular cottage covered with narrow clapboards. The fa9ade was symmetrical and the windows were multi-pane wood sash windows. Sometime betvveen 1949 and 1952, the house was expanded and completely remodeled. l The current appearance of the house, with its asbestos shingles and picture windows, retains the look of the early ranch-style of the 1950s. The asphalt roof shingles are also reddish in 'color. The raised foundation is concrete. The north side of the fa9ade features a projecting wing with a simple gable. On the north elevation, the footprint has been extended at the east comer (circa 1949-1952). There is a lean-to addition (circa 1950) at the rear, where a side door opens onto a ,small concrete stoop. A simple gable roof shelters this entrance. On the rear (east) elevati on has a projecting wing with a simple gable roof, which appears to have been the porch of the older house. The living room is in the front and the kitchen is in the projecting wing at the southeast comer. Bedrooms are located in the north portion. The basement is fully excavated, but partially finished. The current parcel is a deep rectangular lot of 0.42 acres. The original acreage was larger, but has been divided several times with newer homes located in the rear and accessed by Winter Glen Lane, which runs along the south side ofthe property. The 1952 cinderblock garage is behind the house. It is a double-garage with a simple gable roof. The doors are wood with six-inset windows. There are windows jn the sides and a door at the northeast comer. Behind the garage are the remnants of the chicken coops, built between 1943 and 1952. An early tax photograph shows the original house with a similar chimney and foundation, and the surrounding trees, but most of the rest of the earlier house was altered beyond recognition. 1 OMB No. 1024-0018, NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. Z Page ~ Walbeck, Glen M. & Roxie, House, Draper. OMS No. 1024-0018, NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. § Page 1 Walbeck, Glen M. & Roxie, House, Draper. Salt Lake County, UT Narrative Statement of Significance The Glen M. and Roxie Walbeck House, built in phases between circa 1935 and 1952, is a one-story early ranch-style house located at 12875 S. Boulter Street in Draper, Utah. The house is significant for its association with the peak of the poultry industry in Draper in the mid-twentieth century. The property is eligible within the Multiple Property Submission: Historic and Architectural Resources of Draper, Utah, 1849-1954. The associated historic context is the "Twentieth-Century Community Development and the Poultry Industry Period, 1918-1954." Members of the Walbeck family were among the numerous second and third-generation Draper residents who engaged in small-scale poultry production as a means to supplement their income. Glen M. Walbeck received the land from his mother, Eunice Brown Walbeck, a daughter of Ebenezer Brown, Draper's first settler. Glen M. Walbeck had a varied career as a coal miner and pro-baseball player before settling down in his hometown with his wife Roxie in the 1930s. In the 1940s and early 1950s, the Walbecks, like many of their neighbors, built several chicken coops in the rear of their property and participated in Draper's cooperative egg economy toward the latter part of this contextual era. After Alex Walbeck's death, the land was deeded to his wife Eunice Brown Walbeck. In March 1937, Eunice Walbeck deeded the property to her son, Glen M. Walbeck. According to the tax records, the house was built just prior to this transaction. Eunice Brown was born in Draper on October 20, 1865, to Ebenezer Brown (1901-1 878) and his third wife, Eliza Samantha Pulsipher (1837-1877). Eunice Brown married Alexander William Walbeck on March 22, 1883. Alex Walbeck was born in Sweden on October 23, 1859. The family moved to Arizona between 1884 and 1889. Glen Mervin Walbeck was born on May 4, 1901, in Draper. He was known at various times as Glen, Mervin, Merv, or most commonly Wally. Glen Walbeck grew up in Draper, but as a young man moved to central Utah to be a coal miner. He married Roxie Larson on November 14, 1928. Roxie Leadrue Larson was born in Cleveland, Emery County, Utah, on June 27,1908. The couple are listed on the 1930 census enumeration living in Spring Canyon, Carbon County, Utah. Glen was working in a coal mine. The family moved to Draper in the mid-193 Os. They had three children. The tax records indicate the clapboard cottage was built in 1935. The house was expanded and remodeled sometime between 1949 and 1952, most likely in 1950 when a large mortgage ($3,500) was taken out on the property. It is not known how soon after their move to Draper that the OM.B No. 1024-0018, NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. §. Page ~ Walbeck, Glen M. The Draper poultry industry officially began in 1918 when eight farmers began to work co-operatively to buy feed and market eggs. Draper's poultry business thrived despite a general downturn in the economy during the depression years. But the business was not without risks. In 1932, a disease went through chicken farms in Draper and wiped out entire flocks. In addition to the traditional obituary, there was also special notice of his passing in the Sports section of the Salt Lake Tribune: Utah' s baseball fans who harken back to the good old days were saddened Wednesday at the passing of Wally Walbeck, one of the more prominent native sons in the game. The property passed to her son, Daryl Glen Walbeck, and from him to the current owner Amber Walbeck in 2004. History of Draper, Utah, Volume Two, 251 . James states in one of his notes that some of them seemed receptive to his message, but he was unable to stay long enough to see if any of them e braced the gospel. He worked in England for some tim to earn enough money for his and his daughter Elizabeth's assage back to America. They arrived in St. Louis on the hip "Liverpool." He then left Elizabeth with a Sister Mc rick while he went to Nauvoo where his daughter Agne had been removed by the bishop as the Saints were ex cting to leave for the mountains of the west. He built a one-room adobe house with a cellar under i pn the comer lot of the Eleventh Ward. He finished the house the same day as the first snow arrived. He later added another room and lived in Salt Lake for four years, then 738 moved to East Tooele City, bought ten acres of land an paid for it in cash. He built a two-room log hou~e an planted a small orchard. While there he organized Sunday School, also a girls' choir. . Unknc EUNICE BROWN WAlBECK My father and mother were Ebenezer Brown Elsa Samantha Pulsifer Brown. Mother was Father's t wife. I was born October 20, 1865, in a three room ad house which stood where Whetman's garage is r (12688 So. 1000 E., Draper, Utah) I was the sixth cl Our family was as follows . Ebenezer, Samantha I Clarrissa, David E., Joseph, Eunice, Hyrum, Zina Pricilia, and Elisha. 739 I remember when they were building Father's new home where Nile Brown lives. (12631 So. 1000 E., Draper, Utah.) Mother and Aunt Mary, Father's fourth wife, moved into the new home, and Aunt Phoebe, Father's second wife, stayed in the old home. Aunt Mary died that spring, on March 29,1867, and Aunt Phoebe moved into the new home to take care of Aunt Mary's children. We went to school across from our home. It was held in the old meeting house. I had many teachers. Some of them were Mary Elizabeth Shipley Smith, L. Frieda Fitzgerald McCallister, Edward Orgill, Cliff Erben, Mr. Woodbury, four Stewart men, the last of which was William Stewart. One day while going to Willy Stewart's school he told me he wanted me to stay and talk to him after school. I had no idea what he had in mind. I was then sixteen years old. Mr. Stewart ask me if I would like to teach school. The teacher of the younger children must leave, and he needed someone to fill in for a few months. Some of my pupils were Chris Hendricksen, Ella Allen, and Roy Boulter, Mother died suddenly just seven years after Aunt Mary, on April 29, 1877. Father died in 1878, as the result of a stroke. He had been ill the whole winter before. I remember sitting in the room with my father during a visit from Bishop Stewart. I remember father telling him he had always felt when his time came to go, he would be ready, but it was a hard pill to swallow now with all these children he must leave with no one to take care of them. Aunt Phoebe died a year later in 1879. After father died we were placed in the hands of an administrator. We lived at home alone. David went off to work for the winter. Zina lived with Clarrissa. We would have to go to the administrator for anything we needed. Being left alone, we children all went to school and managed the best we could. I believe there was an influence that kept us and protected us from doing very bad. ,- ;i During a May Day celebration I was in a Sund School play. Clar made me a viol dress out of one mothers. It had a low neck line and short sleeves, so umade me a white blouse to go over it to wear after the p! , Clar bought me some new cloth shoes. The poem I reclt was as follows: I'm my muzzers little dariing. Don't you think I'm fresh and sweet? With these flowers at my shoulder And my muslin dress so neat? Mamma made it just a purpose 'Cause I's goin' to speak to you . It's pretty, don't you think so? Wish 'twas yours, I bet you do. We had plenty of entertainment. Men would cc around with panoramas showing pictures. A Mr. P! Dibble's shows were of early church history. We I~arr a lot from them we never would have known otherwise Mr. Christian came through with pictures too, but not often. Another panorama they showed was of the ~e ' wonders of the world. There were dances on the hohd and some in between. The fourth and twenty-fourth of , were always celebrated. . There was an active home dramatics club. [ Rideout and Annie Brown were prominent in this. This \ before the MIA was organized for the young people of church. I was in one of the plays, titled "Ten Nights I Bar Room". I had to run on the stage and pull on a r and run off again. Other plays I remember them presen were "Charcoal Burner" and "Octroon". I was about fifteen when I started going out with Walbeck. He came and borrowed a bucket. Wher brought it back, he ask me to go to the fourth of Ju.ly da' Clar made me a black dress with ruffles on the skirt. A came after me and I didn't want to go because I didn't t I looked nice enough, but he coaxed me to go. From t on I went with him for two years and married him wh was seventeen. He was six years older than me. Clar helped me make things to get married. She used her influence with Brother Joshua Terry, our administrator, to get me some of the things I needed. We were married nineteen months when we went to Arizona. I was pregnant when we left. It was October 16, 1884, when our group of eight people, three wagons and a herd of cattle left town. We stayed in Arizona for five years and there my first three children were born. We named them Nora ' Leslie and Clarence. We left there the eleventh of September, 1889, and arrived home on the third of October. We settled in Draper, making our home in the old home of Jim Day's. Our daughter Elsie was born there. We moved from there to Nephi Heward's place where we lived a little over a year, then moved to the Stewart's big house where our son Harold was born. We then moved to Charley Peterson's house for a short time, and then decided to move onto our own ground. (12171 South Boulter Street, Draper, Utah) We lived in a tent until our one room house was built which we moved into and lived in the rest of our lives. Five children were born to us in this home. They were Elmer, Lois, Winnie, Mervin and Regina. The grim reaper called two of our little ones: Elmer at just seven years old, and Regina, our sixteen month old baby. I lost my husband Aleck on July 28, 1920. His death was so sudden it was a terrible shock to us a". Then in the same year, my oldest daughter, Nora, died, on November 20, 1920, leaving her three children. I am a member of the Daughters Of Utah Pioneers. I first joined the Salt Lake Camp Number Two, and learned what it meant to the women who belonged. It was my desire to have a camp started in Draper, so I talked to the women in Relief Society meeting and asked them how they felt about it. The camp was organized and named the Ebenezer Brown Camp after my father, because he was the first man to settle in Draper. I was made registrar, Li"y Brown, captain; and Clarrissa Terry, my sister, was 742 Chaplin. Helen Vawdrey was the secretary. . I have found a great deal of pleasure in being self supporting. I worked in the canning factory in Draper for years, and at the sugar factory in Payson. I can't cou~t the number of quilts I have made, but I do know I have plece~. 38 double wedding ring quilts, 25 "trip around the world quilts, besides many others, and have q.uilted hundreds. I raised and sold berries and other frUits and worked .at anything I could to earn the wear with-all to keep our family together. . I had ten children, three of which are dead. Seven of my twenty-nine grandchildren have died, two of them giving their lives in the Second World War. I have forty great-grandch iIdren. I have enjoyed working with flowers when I was able to . I have always tried to uphold the standards of my pioneer parents. Through my faith and prayers I fee! I have been able to do this, When Draper celebrated .It~ centennial I was an honored guest, being one of the nativE pioneers. My membership in the church has meant a grea deal to me. The earliest portion was built around 1935 as a one-story rectangular cottage covered with narrow clapboards . The fayade was symmetrical and the windows were multi-pane wpqd sash windows. Sometime between 1949 and 1952, the house was expanded and completely remodeled~The current appearance of the house, with its asbestos shingles and picture windows, retains the look of the early ranch-style of the 1950s. There is also a contributing 1952 cinder-block garage behind the house and remnants of several chicken coops (1943-1954) at the rear of the property. The remnants of the coops do not have sufficient integrity to be contributing buildings. The Walbeck House is located at 12875 S. Boulter Street Boulter Street is often noted as 1480 East in current and historical records. The house faces Boulter Street to the west The house is covered with white asbestos shingles. The front door features three wedgedshaped windows arranged fanlike. The living room window is also a large picture window with a brick sill. w\;..Jr". On the north elevation, the footprint has been e s ner. The south elevation has two main level winq, ows (sheltered by aluminum awnings) and two basements windows. There is a lean-to acmrnon ~ rear, where a side door opens onto a small concrete stoop. The living room is in the front and the kitchen is in the projecting wing at the southeast corner. There are windows in the sides and a door at the northeast corner. Behind the garage are the remnants of the chicken coops, built between 1943 and 1952. The house is landscaped around the house with lawn and mature trees. The back property is overgrown. The house is in excellent condition and contributes to the historic resources of Draper, Utah . Because the owner could not be contacted for access to the interior of the house, it was not possible to determine how much of the house exists. An earlier tax photograph shows the original house with a similar chimney and foundation , and the surrounding 4. • ~ L- 1trees, but mo~t of thEfJ ~est of the house was ~ither, d~molished or altered beyond recognition . 1 Ider ~~16v~~to\~l~~~~~~t.~dLi\(MM OMB No. 1024-0018. NPS Form United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Section No. § Page 1 Walbeck, Glen M. & Roxie, Draper, Salt Lake County, UT NARRATIVE STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Glen M. and Roxie Walbeck House, built in phases between circa 1935 and 1952, is a one-story early ranch-style house located at 12875 S. Boulter Street in Draper, Utah. The house is significant for its association with the peak of the poultry industry in Draper in the mid-twentieth century. The property is eligible within the Multiple Property Submission: Historic and Architectural Resources of Draper, Utah, 1849-1954. The associated historic context is the Twentieth-Century Community Development and the Poultry Industry Period, 1918-1954. Members of the Walbeck family were among the numerous second and third-generation Draper residents who engaged in small-scale poultry production as a means to supplement their income. In the 1940s and early 1950s, the Walbecks, like many of their neighbors, built several chicken coops in the rear of their property and participated in Draper's co-operative egg economy. The Walbeck House is a contributing historic resource in Draper, Utah. HISTORY OF THE GLEN M. AND ROXIE WALBECK HOUSE: The first recorded deed to the Boutler Street land was from members of the Stringfellow family to William John Terry in 1889. William John Terry (1856-1935) later sold two parcels to Alexander Walbeck in 1894 and 1899. After Alex Walbeck's death, the land was deeded to his wife Eunice Brown Walbeck. In March 1937, Eunice Walbeck deeded the property to her son, Glen M. Walbeck. According to the tax records, the house was built just prior to this transaction. Eunice Brown was born in Draper on October 20,1865, to Ebenezer Brown (1901-1878) and his third wife, Eliza Samantha Pulsipher (1837-1877). Eunice Brown married Alexander William Walbeck on March 22, 1883. Alex Walbeck was born in Sweden on October 23, 1859. The family moved to Arizona between 1884 and 1889. They bought the Boulter Street property in 1894. Eunice and Alex had ten children , eight of whom lived to maturity. Alex Walbec died on July 28, 1920. Her oldest daughter Nora also died in 1920, leaving three children . As a result E ic.~ '(Valbeck became very self-sufficient and worked in both the Draper cannery and the sugar factory in Pay on0"f'n1937 , she deeded a portion of her property to her youngest son, Glen Mervin Walbeck. Eunice Br W HWalbeck died on May 8, 1950. Roxie Leadrue Larson was born in Cleveland, Emery County, Utah, on June 27, 1908. The couple are listed on the 1930 census enumeration living in Spring Canyon , Carbon County, Utah. Glen was working in a coal mine. The family moved to Draper in the mid-1930s. They had three children. The tax records indicate the clapboard cottage was built in 1935. The house was expanded and remodeled sometime between 1949 and 1952, most likely in 1950 when a large mortgage ($3,500) was taken out on the property. OMB No. 1024·0018. Daylight-savings time, approved by Congress on March 19, 1918, may have he p dihe Draper chicken business: "In winter months night lights were turned on in coops to give chickens more time to eat mash, wheat, calsite, and drink the continuous flow of water."2 In 1926, Draper Poultrymen Incorporated was organized. By the time of the 1930 census enumeration, the poultry business had grown so fast that over 90 workers were listed in the poultry industry. Draper's poultry business thrived despite a general downturn in the economy during the depression years. But the business was not without risks. In 1932, a disease went through chicken farms in Draper and wiped out entire flocks. Some producers lost everything and gave up the idea of producing and selling eggs. 3 That year, the Draper Egg Producers Association was organized when several egg producers formed their own co-operative called the Utah Poultry and Farmers Co-Operative. During the first half of the twentieth century, Draper was known as the "Egg Basket of Utah" mostly due to marketing copy such as "Egg Basket Quality Snow White Eggs" produced and packed by the Draper Egg Producers Association . Draper's co-operative egg economy was so successful that community leaders from throughout Utah visited Draper and used it for a model for co-operatives in their communities. The city gained national prominence when eggs from Draper were shipped to servicemen overseas during World War II. According to one Draper historian, at one point, "almost everyone had chickens," a fact nearly collaborated by Draper's numerous poultry-related outbuildings. 4 The Walbecks were no exception. Glen "Wally" Walbeck died on March 4, 1964. In addition to the traditional obituary, there was also special notice of his passing in the Sports section of the Salt Lake Tribune: Utah's baseball fans who harken back to the goo old days were saddened Wednesday at the passing of Wally Walbeck, one of the more ~rw n nt native sons in the game. A one-time professional who climbed as far as the Pac· ickYC ast League, Walbeck was noted for his keen eye at the plate and his ability to chose [sic] choice pitches. He criss-crossed the state as a player and manager in the various semipro leagues and was active with Helper, Provo, Pinney Beverage among others. 5 Roxie Walbeck survived him by many years.
