The bridge is a simple, skewed T-beam structure constructed of reinforced concrete. The deck is a single span resting on concrete abutments located on either side (east and west banks) of the canal. The overall length of the bridge as measured along the balustrade/guardrail is 23 feet. The balustrades lining the north and south margins of the bridge consist of concrete guardrails with decorative walls located at either end (east and west) and curving gently outward, away from the road. The guardrail is composed ofa slightly round-topped concrete cap rail resting atop a slotted concrete wall. The slots are in the shape of a round arch. The decorative walls comprising the ends of the balustrade are slightly tapered in shape, becoming shorter in height at the distal ends (the ends furthest from the center of the balustrade). The walls have decorative elements composed of recessed panels mirroring the tapering of the wall and projecting concrete bands emphasizing the curve of the walls. These elements, combined with the slots in the guardrail, give the bridge a simplified Art Deco appearance in the use of geometric shapes as decorative elements. This style of bridge balustrade was common among such bridges across canals throughout the Salt Lake VaHey in the 1930s. 5 HISTORY Architect/Builder: City of Draper Date of COllstructioll: c.1935 Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with'S" or (See illstructiolls for details) [C]Agriculture [C] Architecture [ ] Archaeology [ ] Art [ ] Commerce [ ] Communications [ ] Community Planning & Development ] Conservation ] Economics ] Education ] Engineering ] Entertainment/Recreation ] Ethnic Heritage ] Exp Iorati on/Settl ement ] Health/Medicine 'c" (S = Sigllificallt; C = COlltributillg). ] Industry ] Invention ] Landscape Architecture ] Law ] Literature ]Maritime History ] Military ] Performing Arts ] Politics/Government ]Religion ]Science ] Social History [C] Transportation [ ] Other: Write a chrollological history of the property, focusillg primarily 011 the origillal or prillcipal oWllers & sigllijicallt evellts. The canal itself was constructed over a series of years beginning in 1879 and extending into mid 1882, when the canal was completed to downtown Salt Lake City (Horn 2005 :25). Over its history, the canal supplied both culinary and irrigation water to the Salt Lake Valley. The vehicle bridge over the canal was purportedly constructed c. 1935 (Fraserdesign 1989).
