Sam Whittle House 4906 Wasatch Street This house. and many others Iik.· iI. were built in about 1899 by lht' American Smelting and Henning Co. (ASARCo) as company hOllsing for the employees of their Highland Boy smelter. which was completed in 1899. Whittle was Murray's fire chid from ID07 to 1909. lie lived In this house until 1934 and then sold it to his brother. Six years later his brother's son. Roy and Roy's wife Ann. bought it. They have lived in it ever since. St. Vincent DePaul's Catholic Church 4893 Wasatch Street John Olson House, 4928 Wasatch Ave. Built in 1908. this house. along with Ihe houses of the Cahoolls. I he Moffats. and the Bishops. was a focal point on the newly developed Wasatch Avenue in the early years of the 20th century. Like them. it is a box type house. a building type that was popular in Utah in the first years of the 20th century. Characteristic of that type. it is two stories and features high. rectangular massing. a hlp roof. a full-width porch and a bay window. The interior featured five fireplaces with oak mantels. an oak staircase. a buill-in buffet displaying souvenir plates from around the world. wainscoting of polished oak panels. wall paper of elegant red and gold. and omate electrical fixtures as electricity began to replace gas in outlying areas of (h(' Salt L..'l.ke Valley in the early 20lh century. Mr. and Mrs. Fay L. Curtz moved into the house In 1942. during World War II. and shared it with officers needing housing while awaiting the construction of Kearns Army Air Base. southwest of Salt Lake City. where more than 90.000 people received basic training. In the early 1950·s. the house was remodeled to make two apartments with separate entrances; the dining room was divided Into two rooms; a large bay window was removed from the south side of the house and the fireplaces were bricked up. Bryce and Sue Ann Bodily purchased the house afte~ Mr. Curtz's death and plan to restore it to its historiC beauty. St. Vincent's Catholic Parish was founded by Father Patrick A. Maguire in September 1925. Father MagUire originally led worship in the city jail and later In a fraternal hall. but the parish grew quickly. making a separate. new church building necessary. and this building was completed and dedicated on May 30. 1927. ft was one of eight churches in Murray in the 1920's and 1930's - four Mormon wards. and Baptist. Lutheran. Methodist Churches and this Catholic one. It remained the only place of worship for members of SL Vincent's Parish until 1964. when the new parish school opened on Spring Lane and Mass began to be celebrak<l tliere.
