Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Samuel and Lenora Bringhurst House is a 1~-story brick residence built in 1941. The property is located at 4755 S. Rainbow Drive in Murray, Utah. The main level of the house is constructed of brick masonry on a concrete foundation. The upper level was originally sheathed in wood siding and is now covered in aluminum siding (both white). The Bringhurst House is one of five Cape Cod houses in the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision. The original one-story attached garage was converted to living space in 1967, and a detached garage was built in 1985 (noncontributing). The original garage opening did not face the street and, therefore, the conversion does not impact the visual integrity of the design. The house is on a 0.25-acre lot with lawn, flowerbeds, and mature trees. The house has had minor modifications, such as the newer siding and replacement windows that impact integrity in terms of materials and workmanship. However, the overall integrity of location, setting, association, and feeling is excellent. The main block of the Bringhurst House is a rectangle measuring 36 feet by 24 feet with the wide side facing west to Rainbow Drive. The north half of the fac;ade projects slightly creating a notch at the northwest corner. The original attached garage is set back from the main house. It has a footprint of 18 by 22 feet with the narrower side facing the street and the opening in the rear. The concrete foundation is barely visible above grade. The masonry is a textured tapestry dark red brick. The brick is laid in running bond with white-colored flush mortar joints. The main block has a simple gable roof with the ridgeline parallel to Rainbow Drive. There is a secondary simple gable over the attached garage with a slightly lower ridgeline, also parallel to the street. There are two narrow dormers in the fac;ade (west elevation) and one wide center dormer in the rear (east elevation). The roof has recently been re-sheathed in small dark blue shingles. The fac;ade feels symmetrical although the front entry is slightly off-center. There is a low concrete stoop with a flat canopy supported on original L-shaped wrought-iron posts. These posts feature elaborate scroll insets and are painted white. The front door is the original wood panel door with fanlight, but the screen is newer. There is a glass block sidelight. Flanking the entry are two picture windows with rowlock brick sills. The original multi-light windows were replaced with single pane vinyl windows (circa 1990). A multi-light window in the garage wall of the fac;ade was also replaced with the slider. All the main level windows have white faux shutters. The multi-light dormer windows were also replaced with one-over-one vinyl windows. The clapboard siding on the upper level and porch frieze has been replaced with aluminum clapboard siding. The modification is compatible, but the originally decorative scalloped edge is extant only under the porches. The south elevation is divided by a full brick chimney stack with a concrete coping. Each level (main, upper, and basement) has two windows flanking the stack. The multi-light windows were also replaced, but the main level windows feature faux muntins. The rear (east) elevation also has replacement windows. There is one back door in the main block and another door and siding in the former garage opening. The later rear dormer has a shed roof. Both the main house and former garage feature a covered patio with a nearly flat roof supported on lattice-style posts. The north elevation two windows in the upper gable end. On the interior, the house originally had 880 square feet of space on the main floor. This was increased to 1,271 square feet of space when the garage was converted in 1967. The upper level has 526 square feet of space. The basement is full under the main block with 762 square feet of space. When the house was completed in 1941, the two upper rooms and one half of the basement was finished. There were two bathrooms. Interior modifications include an updated kitchen and the addition of a half bath and master bedroom. The living room's hardwood floors and mantelpiece are intact. The Bringhurst House sits on a 0.25-acre corner parcel. The frontage on Rainbow Drive is straight, but the frontage along Mountain View Drive is slightly curved. The two-car garage built in 1985 faces Mountain View Drive. The garage is built of materials similar to the house: a brick base and siding in the gable trim. There are mature shrubs and flowerbeds around the house with mostly lawn in the front and side yards. On the north side of the house are a mature evergreen and a mature deciduous tree. There are younger trees in the parking strip. The backyard is shallow and mostly devoted to the concrete patio between the house and garage. There is a concrete driveway to the garage. The property has good history integrity and is a contributing resource in its historic Murray neighborhood. 5 IDSTORY 4755 S. Explain and justify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Samuel and Lenora Bringhurst House was built in 1941 just prior to World War II. The property is a contributing resource in its historic Murray neighborhood in the areas of Architecture and Community Planning & Development. In the area of Community Planning, the Bringhurst property is part of the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision neighborhood, which was developed between the 1940s and 1950s. Murray Hill Gardens was one of only two prewar subdivisions in Murray and pre-dated the city's postwar boom period. The property is contributing in the area of Architecture as an example of a Cape Cod cottage with Minimal Traditional details. Cape Cod houses of the period were rare in Utah, and the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision had a small concentration of six examples. The house is also an example of the Federal Housing Administration's Guidelines for Small Houses, which were published in 1936 to help stimulate the construction industry and promote home ownership during the depression years. The house has minor modifications and would likely not be eligible for Architecture as an individual nomination but contributes to the historic resources of the subdivision. The property is potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under the Historic Resources of Murray City, 1850-1967, Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS). The contextual periods of the MPS are divided by building type. The Bringhurst house is eligible within the historic context, the "Americanization of Murray's Residential Architecture, 1902-1965" and the subdivision is eligible for the above context, as well as the "Murray's Subdivision Development Boom Period, 1946-1967" contextual period . Murray City has undergone four major periods of historic development. The first was a period of agrarian settlement lasting from 1848 to 1869. The second was as an industrial boomtown that began with the coming of the railroad and the establishment of several smelters in the area. The second period lasted from 1870 to 1931, the year the Great Depression reached Murray. This era also included the beginning of a community-building period after Murray's incorporation in 1903. Though agriculture continued in Murray for some time, the agrarian economy was increasingly supplanted by industry and commerce in the twentieth century. The third period of development began with the depression, a second world war and ended in 1960s after a phenomenal period of population and subdivision growth in the city. The year 1950 marked the closure of the last smelter in the city, and also coincided with the beginning of the transformation of the city from an independent industrial town to a suburban bedroom community for nearby Salt Lake City. By the early twentieth century, Murray's commercial district had spread north to the intersection of 4800 South and State Street. 1 As the commercial district grew, a large number of merchants and professionals moved to a neighborhood east of State Street between Vine Street and both sides of 4800 South. This neighborhood was listed on the National Register as the Murray Downtown Residential Historic District in 2004 (NRIS #04001566).2 The area between 4800 South and 4500 South, and State Street and the Big Cottonwood Creek was part of a farm owned by Jonathan and Saran Brown, English immigrants who settled in Murray in 1853. Their oldest son, Henry W. Brown, filed the first homestead patent on the land in 1874. By the late 1930s, the homestead acreage had been reduced, but the area was still semi-rural. Prior to a county-wide survey in 1917,4800 South was 17th Street. It was also commonly called Murray Boulevard or the Murray-Holladay Road. West of State Street, it was called the Murray-Taylorsville Road. Today's 4500 South was originally 16th Street. 2 The commercial business district was listed as the Murray Downtown Historic District in 2006 (NRIS #06000928). 1 5 mSTORY 4755 S. Rainbow Drive, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah page 4 -continue~ In 1938, Edward M. Ashton, a Salt Lake City real estate developer, began working with descendants of the Brown family and other property owners on the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision. On January 10, 1940, Ashton filed the subdivision plat on behalf of fifteen property owners. Murray Hill Gardens was the first subdivision to be plated in Murray after the depression years of the early 1930s. By the time the United States entered World War II in December 1941 , thirty-one homes had been built in the first phase of the subdivision, mostly on Brown Street and the west half of Mountain View Drive. About half the houses on Rainbow Drive were built before the war, the other half were built in the postwar period. The first homes built in the area followed FHA guidelines for small houses, first developed in 1936 to help stimulate home ownership and the construction industry following the Great Depression . Permission for the construction of these private homes during World War II was likely given because the nearby lead smelter was used to manufacture bullets and therefore classified as a defense industry. The first phase of the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision, developed between 1938 and 1945, was particularly popular with families of Murray's professional and merchants, who had strong ties to the nearby business district. One of the original owners, Karl D. Hardy, was primarily responsible for selling the remaining lots. Karl D. Hardy worked for the Home Investment Company. On May 3, 1941, Karl D. and May J. Hardy sold Block 3, Lot 21 to Lenora K. Bringhurst. Lenora Bringhurst and her husband, Samuel E. Bringhurst, took out a mortgage for $5,400 on the property for the construction of the house. The builder is unknown. A photograph of the S. E. Bringhurst home was featured in the December 18, 1941 , issue of the Murray Eagle as one example of the beautiful new homes in the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision. Samuel Enoch Bringhurst was born in Taylorsville, Utah, on January 27, 1890. He was the grandson of the first homesteaders in the Bennion-Taylorsville area that later was annexed into Murray in 1979. Lenora Kemp was born on February 14,1892, in St. George, Utah. Samuel and Lenora were married December 9, 1909. Samuel served in the Swiss-German mission for the LOS Church after his marriage. Lenora remained in St. George and when Samuel return their first child was born in St. George. They later moved to Murray where they had three more children. Sam and Lenora had three daughters and one son, born between 1913 and 1922: Evelyn Bringhurst Wood, Lucy Bringhurst Bagley, Leah Bringhurst Wolfley, and Samuel John Bringhurst. The family is listed on the 1920 census at 389 E. 4800 South, when Sam was working as a manager for a local company. On the 1930 census, Sam worked for an automobile dealership and the family was living at 545 E. Vine Street. Samuel Bringhurst was also a Murray Justice of the Peace between 1926 and 1931 . On the 1940 census, the household include their son, Samuel John, and their daughter, Evelyn and her husband, Eugene Wood. Sam worked as an appraiser for the Home Owners Loan Company and Eugene was an intern at the LOS Hospital. The city directories indicate that the Woods moved to an apartment closer to the hospital when Sam and Lenora moved to the new house in 1941. Samuel John married in 1946. Sam and Lenora did not have much time to enjoy their new home. Samuel Bringhurst was called to be the mission president for the LOS Church in the Northwestern United States, where he served from 1944 to 1948. He then served as the president of the Austrian-Swiss mission between 1948 and 1953. While in Switzerland, he selected the site for an LOS Temple. When construction was completed in 1955, Samuel Bringhurst was called to be the first temple president and Lenora the first temple matron. During this time of church service, Bringhurst family members took turns living in the Murray house. Dr. Eugene and Evelyn Wood returned for a few years in the 1940s before they purchased a house in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Leah and her husband, Delbert Wolfley, lived in the house in the 1950s. Delbert was a regional sales manager for the Dry Chem Company. The Wolfleys stayed in Murray and later purchased a home at 4710 S. Rainbow Circle. Sam and Lenora lived in the home in the 1960s before retiring to a condominium in the Three Fountains development at the east end of 4800 South. Samuel Enoch Bringhurst died on January 31 , 1973. Lenora Kemp Bringhurst died on July 29, 1974. They are buried in the Taylorsville Memorial Cemetery. In 1969, John Patrick and Phyllis R. Jones had a contract to buy the Rainbow Drive property, but it was the Bringhurst family who sold the house after Sam and Lenora's deaths. In 1978, the property was deeded to Kroft Inc. and in 1979 to Jeanette Wright. Jeanette sold the property to Joseph and Julie Davis in 1988. The Davis family sold the house to the current owner, Michelle L. Ellis Beeby in 2010. .6 PHOTOGRAPHS 4755. S. Rainbow Drive, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah Common Label Information: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
