The Ashby-Ensign House is a one-story brick cottage built in 1941. The property is located at 211 E. Mountain View Drive in Murray, Utah. The house is constructed of striated brick on a raised concrete foundation. The style of the house is Minimal Traditional. There is an original attached garage at the northeast corner. The asphaltshingled roof has a main gable and with two secondary cross gables on the fa~de. The house features a projecting entrance foyer. The house has had only minor exterior and interior modifications since it was constructed 1941 . It is on a 0.23 acre lot with no outbuildings. The surrounding neighborhood is within the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision, which includes a mix of housing stock from the 1940s to the 1950s. The Ashby-Ensign House is in excellent condition and contributes to the historic resources of Murray, Utah. The footprint of the Ashby-Ensign House is roughly square measuring 30 feet by 30 feet. The central entry measures 8 feet by 4 with a concrete stoop and steps. The masonry is an orange-brown multi-colored striated brick laid in a running bond with raked pink mortar joints. The brick courses are laid to the apex of each gable. The fa~ade is the south elevation. It is divided visually by the projecting entry, which has a small simple gable roof. The front door appears to be the original wood-panel door with a small vertical light. There is a small opening filled with glass block next to the front door (original). The screen is a non-historic alteration. To the east is a larger simple gable above a small double-hung wood window with two-over-two horizontal lights. On the west half of the fa~de is a large picture wood-sash window with divided lights. All the windows feature rowlock brick sills. The storm windows may be historic, but the wrought-iron rail was added later. The sashes are painted white, while the other contrasting wood work, e.g. the thin wood cornices, has been panted coral. The attached garage is setback at the northeast corner. The garage features a simple gable with a ridgeline running parallel to the street. There is one window and a secondary door in the east elevation. The window has horizontal lights, similar to the front window. The west fa~de has narrow windows flanking a brick chimney, which features a concrete coping. There is a third window to the rear. The north elevation has two double-hung windows similar to the original. There is also a sliding glass door, which appears to be a later alteration . This patio door has a set of wood steps and a wrought-iron rail. The west elevation of the garage features a half-glass divided-light door with a wide sidelight. There are basement windows on the south elevation. The basement windows are other elevations are obscured shrubs near the house. On the interior, the house has 932 square feet of space on the main floor and 838 square feet in the finished basement. The front door opens into a small foyer that leads into the living room. At the west end of the room is a wood mantelpiece with a tile inset. The current owners have recently removed the carpet and refinished the hardwood floors. The kitchen is to the east and features original cabinets. There are two bedrooms and a bath at the rear of the house. The basement was finished in 1950 with two additional bedrooms and a second bath. The attached garage has 374 square feet of space. The Ashby-Ensign House sits on a 0.23-acre parcel with an angled section to the north. The landscaping is mainly lawn with shrubs near the house. There is a concrete driveway to the garage. The backyard is fenced with a combination of chain link and vinyl. The property has excellent history integrity. The Ashby-Ensign House is a contributing resource in its historic Murray neighborhood. 5 HISTORY 211 E. Explain andjustify any significant themes marked above. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The Ashby-Ensign House was built in 1941 just prior to World War II. The property is a contributing resource in its historic Murray neighborhood in the areas of Architecture and Community Planning & Development. In the area of Community Planning, the Ashby-Ensign property is part of the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision neighborhood, which was developed between in the 1940s to 1950s. The history represents an early subdivision in Murray that pre-dated the postwar boom period. The property is significance in the area of Architecture as an example of the World War II-era cottage with Minimal Traditional details. The house is an example of the Federal Housing Administration's Guidelines for Small Houses, which were published in 1936 to help stimulate the construction industry and promote home ownership during the depression years. The property is potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under the Historic Resources of Murray City, 1850-1967, Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS). The contextual periods of the MPS are divided by building type. The Ashby-Ensign property may be eligible within two historic contexts: the "Americanization of Murray's Residential Architecture, 1902-1965" and "Murray's Subdivision Development Boom Period, 1946-1967." Murray City has undergone four major periods of historic development. The first was a period of agrarian settlement lasting from 1848 to 1869. The second was as an industrial boomtown that began with the coming of the railroad and the establishment of several smelters in the area. The second period lasted from 1870 to 1931, the year the Great Depression reached Murray. This era also included the beginning of a community-building period after Murray's incorporation in 1903. Though agriculture continued in Murray for some time, the agrarian economy was increasingly supplanted by industry and commerce in the twentieth century. The third period of development began with the depression, a second world war, and ended in 1960s after a phenomenal period of population and subdivision growth in the city. The year 1950 marked the closure of the last smelter in the city, and also coincided with the beginning of the transformation of the city from an independent industrial town to a suburban bedroom community for nearby Salt Lake City. By the early twentieth century, Murray's commercial district had spread north to the intersection of 4800 South and State Street. 1 As the commercial district grew, a large number of merchants and professionals moved to a neighborhood east of State Street between Vine Street and both sides of 4800 South. This neighborhood was listed on the National Register as the Murray Downtown Residential Historic District in 2004 (NRIS #04001566).2 The area between 4800 South and 4500 South, State Street and the Big Cottonwood Creek was part of the farm owned by Jonathan and Saran Brown, English immigrants who settled in Murray in 1853. Their oldest son, Henry W. Brown, filed the first homestead patent on the land in 1874. By the late 1930s, the homestead acreage had been reduced, but the area was still semi-rural. In 1938, Edward M. Ashton, a Salt Lake City real estate developer, began working with descendants of the Brown family and other property owners on the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision. On January 10, 1940, Ashton filed the subdivision plat on behalf of fifteen property owners. Murray Hill Gardens was the first subdivision to be plated in Murray after the depression years of the early 1930s. 1 Prior to a county-wide survey in 1917, 4800 South was 1ih Street. It was also commonly called Murray Boulevard or the Murray-Holladay Road. West of State Street, it was called the Murray-Taylorsville Road . Today's 4500 South was originally 16th Street. 2 The commercial business district was listed as the Murray Downtown Historic District in 2006 (NRIS #06000928). 5 HISTORY 211 E. Mountain View Drive, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah page 4 -continuedBy the time the United States entered World War II in December 1941, thirty-one homes had been built in the first phase of the subdivision, mostly on Brown Street and the west half of Mountain View Drive. The first homes built in the area followed FHA guidelines for small houses, first developed in 1936 to help stimulate home ownership and the construction industry following the Great Depression. Between 1942 and 1945, twenty-three new homes were built in Murray Hill Gardens, despite a lack of labor and materials during the war years. Permission for the construction of these private homes was likely given because the nearby smelter was used to make lead bullets and therefore classified as a defense industry.3 The first phase of the Murray Hill Garden subdivision, developed between 1938 and 1945, was particularly popular with families of Murray's professional and merchants, who had strong ties to the nearby business district. The first owners of the home were Delbert G. and Verna L. Ashby, who purchased the property in March 1941. Based on a tax photograph, probably taken in January 1942, the house was not completed and occupied until 1942. The builder of the home was possibly Curtis L. Shaw (1888-1944), one of Murray's most prolific home builders and the city's mayor from 1942 to 1944. The brickwork and mantelpiece is similar to other homes built by Curtis Shaw during the same period. Delbert George Ashby was born on October 15, 1905 in Bountiful, Utah. Delbert Ashby graduated from the LOS Business College. He had a career as an accountant for the Kennecott Copper Company, and later Winder Dairy. Verna LaFern Lundberg was born on June 6, 1907, in Murray, Utah, to James and Clara Lundberg. James Lundberg was a chemist at the smelter in Murray. Verna received a teaching degree from the University of Utah and taught elementary school for fourteen years. Delbert and Verna were married on January 22, 1937. They had one daughter, Janet. Delbert was among the many residents of Murray who commuted to work for the Kennecott Copper Company. The family lived in Murray only a few years before moving to West Valley City. Verna Lundberg Ashby died on April 10, 1999. Delbert Ashby died on February 4, 2001. The second owners were Lee O. and Cora H. Ensign, who purchased the property in May 1944. Lee Osborn Ensign was born in Salt Lake City on November 2, 1905. Cora Leon Hill was born in Kaysville, Utah, on April 8, 1907. Lee and Cora were married on April 19, 1926. Lee was a grocer and meat cutter. He worked for the Hoffman Market and the Skaggs Company on State Street, and presumably moved to Murray to be within walking distance from work. Cora worked for the Ranel Beauty Salon while they lived in Murray. The Ensigns sold their house to George V. and Marjean Grass in 1964. Lee Osborn Ensign died in Murray on August 18, 1984. Cora Hill Ensign died in Salt Lake City on December 16, 1997. George and Marjean Grass were the property owners until 1973 when they sold to the house to David Caldwell Houser and Maxine Ray Caldwell Houser. In 2014, the house passed to David E. Houser and Linda H. Alvey. A year later it was sold to the current owners, Joseph and Marianne Boyer. 6 PHOTOS 211 E.
