Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The residence at 4778 S. Meadowview Road in Murray is a one-story brick Ranch-style house built in 1955. The house features an attached garage and an unusual angular footprint. The foundation is concrete and the lowslope roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The house has minimal exterior modifications, most notably shutters on a corner window and new wood shingles in the gable trim . The house is sited to take advantage of its 0.30-acre corner lot. There is a large patio area, but no outbuildings on the property. The Trott house has good historic integrity and is a contributing resource in its Murray neighborhood. From the facade (south elevation), the house appears to be a traditional rectangular Ranch or Rambler-style house; however, the footprint has a V-shaped bedroom wing at the west end. The facade is divided into four zones (from west to east): a projecting wing with a simple cross-gable, a corner window with brick sills, a recessed front entry, and the double-car attached garage. The front door faces east. The entire structure is faced with textured orange brick laid in a running bond . The gable trim was original vertical slats, but has been replaced with wood shingles (painted tan). The garage door is wood with panels painted in a contrasting tan and cream . There is a concrete patio that runs between the west angled wing and a utility room at the rear of the garage. The windows are aluminum sliders. There is a wide brick chimney over the living room area. On the interior, the house has 1,895 square feet of space on the main floor and slightly more in the basement. The attached garage has 620 square feet of space. The Trott House sits on a 0.30-acre corner lot the follows the curve of Meadowview Road . The landscaping includes lawn and rock berms along the curve. There are numerous flowerbeds and shrubs in a patio-planter area near the entry. There are several mature trees in the front and back lawn areas. The backyard has a wood fence and a patiO in the corner. A short concrete driveway is in front of the garage. The Trott House has an unusual deSign that makes a unique contribution to the Murray Hill Gardens neighborhood and contributes to the historic resources of Murray City. 5 HISTORY Architect/Builder: 4778 S. The Artinal and Wilma Trott House, built circa 1955 contributes to its historic Murray neighborhood in the areas of Community Planning & Development and Architecture. In both areas, the property represents the second phase of the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision, which was developed between in the 1940s to 1960s. The Trott House was built at the south end of Plat B. By the time Meadowview Road was developed , contractors within the subdivision were no longer building tract houses and each residence has a distinct design. The Trott House is such an individualized design , but may have been built speculatively since it was for sale during construction . The residence has all the hallmarks of a mid-century Ranch house: low pitched row, expansive floor plan , integration with the site, and large patio areas for entertaining . The angled wing is a unique twist is the floor plan . The property is potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under the Historic Resources of Murray City, 1850-1967, Multiple Property Listing and Submission (MPS) . The contextual periods of the MPS are divided by building type. The Brown property may be eligible within two historic contexts: the "Americanization of Murray's Residential Architecture, 1902-1965" and "Murray's Subdivision Development Boom Period, 1946-1967." By the early twentieth century, Murray's commercial district had spread north to the intersection of 4800 South and State Street. ' As the commercial district grew, a large number of merchants and professionals moved to a neighborhood east of State Street between Vine Street and both sides of 4800 South . This neighborhood was listed on the National Register as the Murray Downtown Residential Historic District in 2004 (NRIS #04001566) .2 Artinal and Wilma Trott owned a bungalow in the historic district at 4866 S. Wasatch Street. The home on Wasatch was where they ra ised their family. Their later years were spent at the home at 4778 S. Meadowview Road . In 1938, Edward M. Ashton, a Salt Lake City real estate developer, began working on the Murray Hill Gardens subdivision . On January 10, 1940, Ashton filed the subdivision plat on behalf of fifteen property owners. Murra~ Hill Gardens was the first subdivision to be plated in Murray after the depression years of the early 1930s. Edward Ashton served as the promoter of the project in local newspapers. On June 20, 1945, Ashton filed a plat for the Murray Hill Gardens Plat B. Plat B had much larger lots that the earlier subdivision and was more conducive to the popularity of the sprawling suburban ranch house in the post World War II years. The corner Lot 7 of Block 4 in Murray Hill Gardens passed through several property owners before construction began in 1955. In 1946, the parcel was sold to the BB Corporation with David N. and Dora Smith, before being deeded to James Lowry Smith in 1947. Smith held the deed until 1951 when it was sold to Donald W . and Verna F. Challis. The Challis family sold it to William C. and Ida Allred in 1943. , Prior to a county-wide survey in 1917, 4800 South was 17th Street. It was also commonly called Murray Boulevard or the Murray-Holladay th Road . West of State Street, it was called the Murray-Taylorsville Road . Today's 4500 South was originally 16 Street. 2 The commercial business district was listed as the Murray Downtown Historic District in 2006 (NRIS #06000928). 3 Two early subdivision plats, the Bamberger Addition in 1891 and the Miller-Cahoon Addition in 1900, were located west of State Street. Neither subdivision was completely developed until the 1940s. The Tingley's Addition, plated in 1907, is a bungalow neighborhood within the Murray Downtown Residential Historic District east of State Street. The Atwood Addition (plated 1910, now Atwood Estates) is also in the historic district, but was not fully developed until the 1940s. 5 HISTORY 4778 S. Meadowview Road, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah page 4 - continuedA series of liens filed between April and September 1955 five the names of companies who worked on or provided materials for the project. The builder was George S. Jackson of the Construction Specialties Company. It is not known who provided the design. Holladay Lumber & Hardware and the N. O. Nelson Company also held liens until September 30, 1955, when the finished house was sold to A. H. and Wilma Trott. Artinal Howe "Art" Trott was born in Salt Lake City on March 29, 1897. Wilma Ernestine Kaitner was born in Leavenworth , Kansas, on January 21, 1901 . Art served in World War I between 1917 and 1919. He was stationed at Fort Leavenworth at the time of the 1920 census. Art and Wilma were married in Kansas on June 29, 1920. The Trotts had two daughters and were living in Murray in 1930. They were in Denver with three daughters on the 1940 census. Art Trott had a career as a salesman. He sold automobiles, but was employed as a sales man by Hofmann's Hardware when the family purchased the house on Meadowview Road . Art and Wilma lived there until 1964 when the sold the property and moved to Magna. Art Troll died in 1981 and Wilma Trott died in 1980. The second owners were Max D. and Kathleen U. Hunsaker, who lived there between 1964 and 1971 . The current owners are James A. Fischio and Patricia K. S. Fischio. The deed was transferred to the La Scala Sette Family Limited Partnership in 2005 . 6 PHOTOS 4778 S. Meadowview Road, Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah Common Label Information: I. 2. 3. 4. 5.
