Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary: The building documented here is a long, narrow warehouse building exhibiting vernacular early 20th century style. It is clad in thennal brick tiles and cast concrete, rests on a concrete slab foundation, and has a shallow bow-truss roof. The building generally lacks exterior adornment, serving a more utilitarian function. The exterior walls are divided into sections of thennal brick by concrete columns spaced roughly every 20 feet. Fenestration in the building has been altered by the creation of a number of large bay doorways to accommodate modern commercial uses of the property. Several older, original bay doorways, as well as pedestrian doorways are also present in the building and are clearly distinguished by their smaller size and concrete lintels and surrounds. The thennal brick comprising the walls is multi-colored, occurring in shades of orange, yellow, and brown. The bricks are large, approximately I foot square, and have hollow cells akin to cinder block inside. Each block has four cells to it. This type of brick was commonly used in conditions where temperature regulation, either heat or cold, was imperative. As this building once served as a thaw house and contained a boiler and draft system that heated the building and warmed its contents, the use of this type of brick in the building's construction is understandable. Some wall sections of the brick have been replaced with modern concrete block. This is particularly true of the southern and northern elevations, the majority of which have been replaced by concrete blocks. It is probable based on evidence of other structures that may have once been present, that these elevations were connected to other buildings and that the removal of those buildings during the modern era necessitated reconstructing these two elevations with concrete block. A tall, regular brick chimney is located at the south end of the building, near the west end of the south elevation. It is an external chimney that once served the boiler for the building. The chimney is roughly square in plan view and has a slightly corbelled cap. According to the current owner, Bill Winger, the boiler was part of a larger thawing system whereby a vent at the opposite end of the building was used to create a downdraft or draw to pull warm air from the boiler through the building and across its contents, thereby thawing it out (Bill Winger, personal communication to Ellen Smith 2009). The building was reportedly remodeled in 1997. At that time, many of the exterior changes were made, as were corresponding interior changes. The current owner indicated that the interior of the building was divided up into a series of individual "stalls" that each house different business enterprises. Access to the interior of the building could not be obtained from the property owner.
