Briefly describe the principal building, additions or alterations and their dates, and associated outbuildings and structures. Use continuation sheets as necessary: The building at 5813 South 300 West is an early 20th century (ca. 1906) cross-wing (T-cottage) residence exhibiting elements of Classical style. Specifically, the residence exhibits raking cornices, pedimented returns and Doric (Tuscan) columns reflective of the Greek Revival style. The building has a combination of gable and hipped roof sections, all of which are clad in asphalt shingles, and a concrete slab foundation. It is constructed of wood frame clad in drop/novelty siding. A portion of the building is clad in faux tongue-and-groove wood sheet. There appear to be three in-period additions on the building. All three appear to have been constructed ca. 194911950, according to the property tax assessment card. One of the additions is a gabled section extending off of the north elevation of the cross-gable ell. This section encompasses a bedroom. The pitch of the gable is shallower than the pitch of the gable in the original portions of the building. The second is a hipped roof addition that wraps around the northeast comer of the building and encompasses the current kitchen and bathroom, and the third is an enclosed porch extending off of the east elevation of the main wing. Because of the additions, the building has an irregular plan. Three chimneys are present in the building. One is located at the junction of the main wing and the cross-gable ell. One is located at the east end of the main wing, and one is located in the northeast portion of the wrap-around addition. All of the chimneys appear to be constructed from fire brick. The south elevation constitutes the residence's principal far;:ade. This elevation is perpendicular to the frontage road, placing the building in an atypical orientation . However, the original Utah Southern Railroad line passes approximately 100 feet to the west ofthe building, which may suggest why the orientation of the residence was altered-to not face the railroad tracks. The south elevation is characterized by a Victorian style porch supported in the southeast comer by a Tuscan column, two doorways, and two windows. The westernmost window opening is located in the gable end of the cross-gable ell. The opening is large and rectangular, with the long axis oriented vertically. The opening, which has a simple wood si ll , holds a wood frame, 4-light (vertical string), fixed sash window. The second window opening is located in near the eastern end of the porch . It too is large and rectangular, but it is narrower than the western window. The eastern opening holds a wood frame, single-hung, I-over-I window. The two doorways are located at the west end of the porch. One doorway is situated in the south wall of the main wing, and the other is situated in the east wall of the cross-gable ell, where it projects south from the main wing. Both doorways have transom windows, though the transom in the east wall of the ell has been enclosed. There are three window openings in the west elevation. Two are located in the wall of the cross-gable ell, and one is located in a rear addition. The two window openings in the ell are both tall and relatively narrow, and both hold wood frame, single-hung windows. However, these windows appear newer than the windows elsewhere in the building. The window opening in the west wall of the rear addition is large and nearly square. It holds a wood frame, 8-over-l, single-hung window. The north elevation of the building is dominated by the in-period additions. From the rear only the roofs ofthe main wing and original ell are visible. The rear section ofthe roof of the ell is hipped, whereas its southern/front portion is gabled. Two window openings are present in the north elevation. Both are located in the wall of the wrap-around addition, and both are small, rectangular openings holding wood frame, singlehung, I-over-I windows. The east elevation is dominated by the wrap-around addition and an enclosed porch. The wrap-around addition is clad in drop/novelty siding, while the enclosed porch is clad in faux, narrow tongue-and-groove wood sheet. A doorway is present in the enclosed porch, just south of the porch's junction with the wrap-around addition. Several window openings are present in the south elevation. One is located in the wall of the wrap-around addition. The opening is small and rectangular and holds a wood frame, single-hung, I-over-I window. The other window openings are located in the enclosed porch. Two sets ofribbon windows (three windows each) are located in the east and south walls of the porch . These are single-pane, wood frame, tixed sash windows, and they are clearly newer than the single-hung windows found elsewhere in the structure. Although the building is not remarkable in its architecture, it retains integrity oflocation, design, workmanship, materials, and association. The setting, feeling, and association have been compromised by development in the immediate area; however, the residence retains sufficient integrity to be considered eligible for the NRHP. The property containing the residence at 5813 South 300 West in Murray was originally owned by James Randle, who received the entire southeast quarter of Section 13, Township 2 South, Range I West, as part of a homestead land patent in 1873. Randle deeded the property that would later contain the residence to Henry N. and Charles E. Bird in 1903. Henry and Charles Bird were brothers in the extensive Bird family, who were among the earliest settlers in the Murray area. Henry was 63 and Charles was 61 at the time of the land transfer. Charles, who was married to Mary Ann Stephensen at that time, appears to have been the primary occupant of the property, as Henry transferred his interests in the specific parcel that would later contain the residence to Charles shortly after the duo received the land from James Randle. In 1905, Charles and Mary Ann Bird deeded a strip ofland along the east side of the property to the Oregon Short Line railroad for the rail right-ofway. The residence was constructed in 1906, and Charles Bird died in February 1909, leaving Mary Ann and the couple's II children behind. Mary Ann Bird died in July 1924, and the property containing the residence, as well as other property, was deeded to Hazel Carlisle, one of Charles' and Mary Ann's daughters. Hazel was married to Enoch Truman Carlisle, an automotive mechanic, and the couple had at least one child at the time they received the property from Hazel's mother. It is not clear whether Hazel, Enoch, and their family resided in the residence at 5813 South 300 West or merely held title to it. In 1942, as second residence (5823 South) was built on the property, presumably for Hazel, Enoch, and their children. In 1944, Home Owners Loan Corporation released the mortgage on the property, which was still held by Hazel, and which then contained two residences. Enoch Carlisle died in 1947. Around that time, Hazel deeded the property containing the residence at 5813 South to one of her daughters, Lucille, and her son-in-law, Raymond Edward Warenski. Shortly thereafter, several additions were made to the cross-wing home, adding a large kitchen, an indoor bathroom, an enclosed side porch, and another bedroom. In 1983, Hazel deeded her interest in the lands containing the residence at 5823 South to Lucille and Raymond. In early 1984, the parcel containing the residence at 5813 South 300 West as well as the newer residence at 5823 South, was split to form two separate parcels, each containing one of the residences, though the Warenski's owned both properties. Hazel died in 1985. Raymond Warenski died in early 1997, and Lucille died in September 2006, at which time the property containing both residences was deeded to the Raymond's and Lucille's children . The Utah Transit Authority obtained both properties in 2007 and will demolish the buildings in early 2008.
