The Big Cottonwood Creek Bridge is believed to have been first constructed circa 1913, although no records have been located to corroborate this. Although little data is available from 1913, some information concerning modifications petformed on the bridge about twenty years later. In answer to increasing traffic loads, the Utah State Road Commission set about the job of widening this concrete slab bridge. USRC received federal assistance in fimding the widening of the Big Cottonwood Creek Bridge, designating it Secondary Road (SR) project 434. Completed in 1932, the newly widened structure carried four lanes over a 66.0-foot width. Concrete rigid frames were added outside of the original slab, and steel pipe guardrails were installed. Since its completion, the bridge has continued to carry intra-urban traffic in metropolitan Salt Lake City.
