Use continuation sheets as necessary. The 1. Leo and Lyle Ellertson House was built c. 1927 of striated red brick on a lot on the south side of the Murray-Holladay Road or 4800 South. Its Colonial Revival style was popular in Utah for half a century from 1890 to 1940. It has the typical symmetrical fa~ade with multiple light wooden sashes, shutters, and brick cladding. The form or type of the house is a side-gabled period cottage. Its fa~ade is three-bay with a central arched portico over the doorway flanked by pairs of tall narrow small-paned casement windows with decorative shutters. The entrance doorway has a portico roof supported by wooden knee brackets. As is characteristic of period cottages, the house extends to the rear with a side door opening onto the driveway to the east of the house. The house is north facing with a landscaped yard and lawn with mature trees. The side-gabled front section has a medium-pitched roofwith close eaves. A 16' x 25' addition was constructed to the rear of the house in 1942. The c. 1928 double garage is on the southeast corner of the lot (rear) with a concrete driveway leading from it to the street. The house retains its historic integrity and has no recognizable changes on the exterior since the c. 1935 tax photo. Leroy Miller was born in Murray in 1874 to James R. and Mary 1. Gardner Miller. He was president of the Miller-Cahoon Company of Murray until his retirement in 1939 when he moved to Chicago, Illinois. He most likely built the house c. 1927? 1. Leo Ellertson purchased the property in November of 1929 from L.c. and Marjorie Miller. He and his wife, Lyle, lived in the house while he had a dental practice at 120 East 4800 South, down the block. He was born in 1891 in Mona, Juab County, to Norman Williard Ellertson and Mary Melissa Green and educated in Mona Public 3 Date is from the Salt Lake County Tax Assessor's records in the Salt Lake County archives. He and his wife, Marjorie, took out a $2750 mortgage on the property in 1926. 3 Title records show that he paid $250 for the transaction. That may be for just the lot and he built the house afterwards, contrary to the Tax Assessor date. 1 2 5 mSTORY 200 East 4800 South, Murray, UT p. 3 Schools and Brigham Young High Schoo!. He married Sarah Delila (Lyle or Lila) Tye in 1917 in Salt Lake City. She was born in Ephraim, Sanpete County, in 18974 to Jesse Warren Tye and Mary Elizabeth Rasmussen. She taught school in the Wasatch District, Murray City Schools. She was also active in the Lady Lions, the Dental Auxiliary Association and the Murray Women' s Club . In 1926 J. Leo Ellertson graduated from the North Pacific College of Dentistry and subsequently practiced in Murray for thirty-five years . He was a veteran of World War I and served an LDS missionS in New Zealand. He was active in the community with the Murray Lions' Club, the American Legion Post No. 60 in Murray and the Orpheus Chorus . The Ellertsons deeded the property to their children in 1952 and continued to live in the house. After Sarah Ellertson' s death in 1975, the children, Bette Gene Adams and Joy L. Martin, sold the property in 1976 to Otto La Mont and his wife, Shirley D. Heath. John Leo died in 1988 . The Heaths sold in 1978 to Melvin O. and Jo Lynne T. Osborn . In 1980 Melvin L. Osborn and his wife, Jo Lynne T., were living in the house while Melvin L. was working as an agent for the Farmers Insurance Company. In 1984 Jo Lynne T. Osborn sold to Thelma B. Parsons. The current owner is Bruce James Parsons, trustee. 4 5 Her obituary gives an 1897 date; the Ancestral Files at the LDS Family History Library gives 1896.
