House House 1894 Describe the historical significance of the site. Include a discussion of the original and subsequent QI,·mers, and dates and events associated \'{i th the building and the owners. Charles Stillman built the house, according to county records, in 1894. On July 9, 1895, the site was sold to Samuel Stillman (presumably a son). Samuel Stillman's daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in the house circa 1905 and claims that it was built in the 1870's, inherited the house upon her father's death. She and her husband, a Mr. Wheat, lived in the house until i950, when Mr. Wheat died in the living room after being bitten by a rabid dog. At that time the site was sold to millionaire Kenneth White, who was buying up the entire Morningside Heights area. From 1950-60 the house was unoccupied. From 1960 to 1972 the house 1'as Gonsidered the ·Pine Tree Substation" by the local Sheriff's Office because of the prostitution, drug, and, according to neighbors, ·gangster type" activities taking place in the house. The site became so bad through lack of care that in 1972 the County Assessor declared the site derelict. At this time Mr. White had the house and grounds cleaned and repaired. In 1973 the house was rented to Herbert and Jean Larsen, who are the current occupants. Note: When the Morningside Heights area was subdivided, Pine Tree Drive was named after the four huge pine trees that stand in front of this house. - 2- 2. There are also several pedimented gables and triangular dormers. In the living room and master bedroom there are extended bay elements. All of the first floor windows have raised and decorated segmental lintels and sawn stone lugsills. The most prominent feature of the house is an excellent palladian window. It is set in a large triangular dormer and is surrounded by decorative shingles. The same shingle design is continued on the gables and the other dormers. 3. Describe what alterations have been made to the original structure. For example, have there been any addi tions? .Jhere? Hhen? In \'/hat \,/ays has use of the interior space been altered? Has the building been stuccoed or otherwise sheathed? There have been no additions or structural alterations on this house. Sometime before 1936 a small furnace room was dug beneath the house.and plumbing and electricity were added. At this time the kitchen and dining room fireplaces were removed. The adobe hasn't ever been stuccoed, but it has been painted several times. In 1929 a garage was added to the si t·e. It is not attached to the house, however. A 'L, - 3 - 4. D~scribe the physical condition of the site at the present time. The house itself is in good condition; because of its recent repair and upkeep. There are few cracks and little disintegration of the adobe bricks. The yard is clean and well cared for. 5. Uhat are tha future plans for the site? Continued use as a private residence. 6.
