SMITH. DIRECTOR 300 RIO GRANDE SALT LAKE OTY, UTAH 84101 ·1132 TELEPHONE &l1/533-5755 Dear Mr. Godfrey: This is to acknowledge receipt of the National Register of Historic Places nomination form for the Castle Manor, 6315 Holladay Blvd., Salt Lake City. The material provided is enough for our staff to make a preliminary determination that the building is probably eligible for the National Register. However, more information is needed to satisfy the requirements of the National Register office. A lIlore detailed architectural description is necessary, especially since the building is being nominated for its architectural significance. Item 7 should also contain the information on why the structure was moved (you have this in the Knudsen article), but also, a description of the new location and how it compares and contracts to the original should be included. Will the move involve "some unavoidable loss of historic features such as landscaping, foundations, and chimneys" (from the National-Park Service publication of June 1, 1982)? You must be specific in addressing the above questions. In Item 8 - Statement of Significance and History - a specific and succinct statement of significance must be written. However, in order to do this more infor~ation must be provided both on architect· Don Carlos Young and the Castle family. This is necessary both for the statement and as needed supplemental information in defence of the nomination. While our staff can be of help in this endeavor, priorities neccesitate that You may, however, wish to hire a private contractor to complete this form as soon as possible. \~e can supply the names of several subh individuals who have completed suer; cessful National Register forms in past months. we cannot offer assistance until sometime this summer. In addition, the form indicates that the building \'Ii11 be used as a private resideflce. Since you are interested in the 25% investment tax credit, the property must be lIincome producing;!: that is, used for commercial, industrial, or rental residential purposes. I have enclosed a "Tax Incentives for Rehabil i ta ti on Hi s tod c Buil di ngs" brochure and sugges t that you contact Barbat~a Murphy of our office at 533-7039. Thank you for your interest in historic preservation and contact me if you have need of further assistance (533-6017). Sincerely, .-<-"\..~ . . ~.- ' . ,-.)
