The house is an L-shape, three-room cottage built of adobe with a brick exterior. Originally the house consisted of three rooms, the combined kitchen-dining room-parlor on the south and two bedrooms on the north. Quite early, David J. added a pantry to the back of the kitchen. The wing extending toward the street ends in a three-sided bay with each wall having a window. The front corner of the kitchen is also cut away on a similar angle to the sides of the bay, and this angled kitchen wall also contains a window. . The moderately pitched, hipped roof has two ridge lines, the higher running parallel to the front of the house, the lower ridge running forward from the main ridge along the wing. This ridge ends in a polygonal hipped roof over the bay window. The effect is repeated over the angled kitchen wall. A porch with a stepped-up roof extends from the bay window to the beginning of the angled corner wall of the kitchen. The porch has undecorated wooden posts. The brick work contains some interesting decorations above the windows. On the front and sides of the house, a slight brick arch caps each window. The arches along the side walls consist of two courses of brick set end out with the long axis laid vertically. A third course of bricks laid end out but with the long axis laid horizontally completes the arches over the side windows. These bricks are flush with the walls. Above the windows of the bay and the angled kitchen wall, the brick creates a variety of decoration. The arches over these windows contain only two courses of brick, but the bricks extend out beyond the plane of the wall, forming a slight hood over the windows. The extended bricks also drape down on each side of the windows about one sixth of their height. In ·the upper course of each arch, every other brick protrudes beyond the plane of the arch, creating further texture. 1 . l"Draper Historical Society 2nd Annual Home To~r, Wednesday, June 29, 1983." Although credits for the research and writing of the sketches of the houses are not included within the guidebook, Florice Smith Smith, a daughter of David J., probably did the research and wrote the sketch; she acted as a guide at her father's home during the home tour. According to the sketch, a local brick layer, Charley Jones, laid the brick, and David James constructed the rest of the house. o See continuation sheet 8. The David James Smith house is the youngest of the Smith houses built by the second generation and still surviving. In December 1893, Lauritz and Mary sold the property on which this house stands to their son, Brigham. Simultaneously, they deeded a strip just south of the house to John Hyrum. One parcel totaled 3 acres; the other 2.98 acres. Brigham sold his property in December 1897 to David James. Eventually David J. also purchased the portion of John Hyrum's property on the east side of the railroad right of way. David J. married in 1897. 1 Though it is possible that Brigham lived on the property, it is not likely.2 No accounts from the family members mention anyone other than David J. as the builder of the house. In 1900, David, his wife and child appear in a separate household in the census. The house probably dates from 1899. 3 David J. did not farm for a living. According to the 1900 census, David J. worked as a day laborer. The Utah State Gazeteers for the years 1900, 1912/13 and 1920/21 do not include David J. as--a--farmer-in Draper. Inclusion in this category depended upon a person's owning a minimum of fifteen acres, more than twice the amount David owned. Nevertheless, he used the property to supplement the income he earned as a laborer. His daughter indicates in the guidebook that her father had a small orchard and berry patch, a garden, and to the west, fields of wheat for flour and chicken feed and of alfalfa for hay for the cow.4 The house has importance because it illustrates an example of the small cottage built by a family iwth little financial resources. It is in good condition and from the front appears much as it would have at the turn of the century. It gains added significance in its contribution ot documenting the evolution of Draper's economy as shown by the Smith family houses. lLauritz Smith family records, Patron Section, Utah Genealogical Society Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. 2Brigham did not receive the property until he was thirty years of age, and the amount of property he received was so small it seems evident he had already decided not to farm. Since he worked as a blacksmith for many years in Murray, it is likely he moved there about the time he received the land from his father and mother. 3Draper Home Tour guidebook. 4Ibid • o See continuation sheet 9.
