The Fitzgerald House/Sher-Von Dairy is a historic farmstead that includes a contributing nineteenth-century farmhouse, four contributing early twentieth-century outbuildings, a contributing mid-twentieth century garage, a contributing mid-twentieth century milk plant/warehouse, and a contributing circa 1940 concrete silo. The period of significance begins with the construction of the house in 1888-1889 and ends in 1972 with the last phase of modernization of the property into a commercial dairy farm .1 Because the house was updated between 1950 and 1966, the farmstead has good history integrity in all seven qualities of integrity for the mid-century period. The Fitzgerald family currently owns five contiguous parcels of approximately 41 acres that make up the bulk of the dairy farm; however, only two of the parcels have historic buildings (see Map 1). The rectangular parcel with the farmhouse is 3.81 acres. Although the current address is 1128 E. Pioneer Road (12400 South), the property is located south of Pioneer Road, off a long private lane with a large open field on the east side. The north yard of the house shares a boundary and a row of mature trees with the field . Half of the field is included in the house parcel. At the south end, the house faces west to a lawn with remnants of the irrigation ditch system. South of the house is an asphalt driveway, which also provides access to the dairy buildings. The garage is located southeast of the house. There is a concrete pad between the garage and the backyard. The backyard is lawn with mature trees and a few shrubs along the borders between the yard and the vegetable garden to the house. Of note is a circa 1897 root cellar that features a curved concrete roof (modified circa 1960). The root cellar was originally a separate structure, but because it is currently connected to the house, it has not been included as a separate outbuilding. The house parcel also includes two of the agricultural outbuildings, a 1925 coop and a 1927 cow shed with a small pasture area to the east. The house is separated from other uses of the property with both wire and wood post fencing . The C-shaped parcel to the south is 19.37 acres, but only the north section has buildings. The largest is the milk plant. The milk plant/warehouse appears to have been constructed in phases. A circa 1920 barn was demolished when the final expansion was completed in 1972, but another circa 1955 milk parlor was incorporated into the new plant. The plant was built between the two circa 1940 concrete silos, but one silo was demolished during the expansion. Out of several historic outbuildings on this parcel, only the milk plant and a second coop (sheep shed) survive. The circa 1920s outbuilding was moved to its currently location around 1972. The remaining sections of the parcel include pastures and fields surrounded by metal posts and wire fencing. There are several trucks and other farm implements in the yard around the milk plant (see Maps 2-3). HOUSE The farmhouse was built between 1888 and 1889. It is a 1~-story brick central-passage type house. The foundation is stone, which was encapsulated in concrete during a 1955 to 1960 remodeling . The original brick was sheathed in a facing of white roman brick around 1960. The house faces west. The ridgeline of the simple gable roof runs north to south. There are brick chimneys at each gable end (shortened and covered in the face brick). The roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles (circa 1990). The fa9ade is symmetrical with a central entry flanked by two windows. The original windows were narrow two-over-two double-hung wood windows with Victorian-style segmental-arched brick hoods. The window openings have been altered and the windows replaced by newer aluminum casements. The south window is taller than the north window. The front door features a non-historic security screen. 1 The construction dates for the house and outbuildings were derived from public and private sources. Family dates appear to be the most correct for the original house, while dates for twentieth century resources and remodels came from the Salt Lake County tax assessor's records. -continue~ The front porch still has some historic elements, although the wood deck was replaced with concrete (circa 1960). The original full and engaged Tuscan column hold up a simple frieze. The hipped roof has newer shingles, but retains its shape. The soffits are aluminum. Under the eaves of the fa~de, there are three square fixed-frame wood windows. The brick sills are newer, but the windows may be original. The north elevation has a small concrete stoop under a shed roof porch supported on a metal post. The dqor has a security screen. There is a one-over-one aluminum window in the upper level. The gable trim is covered in vertical planks (circa 1960). The rest of the elevation is blank. The south elevation of the original house has a pair of casements on the main level and a one-over-one aluminum window on the upper level, each replacing the original Victorian windows. In 1909, a one-story brick hip-roofed addition was built on the east elevation of the house. Historic photographs show a Victorian-style porch in the southeast corner of the addition. When the house was remodeled, the porch was enclosed with brick walls and an arched entrance with a concrete stoop was extended to the south. This entrance features a half-glass door and a three-quarter-glass screen. In 1912, a second simple gable addition was built on the east elevation. The east gable end has no openings, but there is an aluminum slider and a half-glass door with security screen in the south elevation. A shed-roof porch was enclosed at the northeast corner when the brick face was applied (circa 1955-1960). There is one fixed-frame aluminum window in the north elevation. A historic half-glass door faces east. At the same time, the circa 1896 roof cellar was connected to the house by enclosed stair and semi-circular roof. There are aluminum slider windows in the north and south elevations of the roof cellar. Both cellar and stair structures are covered in white stucco. On the interior, the house has 1,609 square feet of space on the main floor and 264 square feet on the upper floor. There is no basement space beyond the root cellar. The original house has a foot print of 33 feet by 22 feet. It features a central passage floor plan with a central staircase. The upper rooms are only eight feet wide with storage space under the eaves. The back additions have a foot print of roughly 43 feet by 33 feet. For most of the historic period, the house accommodated two families. There are eleven rooms, including two kitchens, two full bathrooms, and four bedrooms. GARAGE The four-car garage is located just southeast of the house. This contributing concrete block building was built in 1948. It has a hipped roof covered in asphalt shingles. The footprint of the building measures 38 by 26 feet. Three of the bay openings on the fa~de (west elevation) are filled with wood clapboard. The second opening from the south has a newer vinyl garage door. There are four six-light metal sash windows, two on the south elevation and two on the east elevation. The north elevation has one pedestrian door facing the house. The floor is concrete. COW SHED The cow shed, built in 1925, is located east of the garage. This contributing building is wood frame and has a footprint measuring approximately 70 by 20 feet with the wide end facing south. The building has a corrugated metal shed roof that slopes to the north. The south elevation has sliding wood doors. The shed is connected to a pasture area east of the house's back yard. CHICKEN COOP An extant chicken coop, built in 1927, is located south of the cow shed. The footprint of the contributing coop is approximately 78 feet by 20 feet. A frame building, it appears to have built in at least two sections. The shed roof is divided into two levels, a higher level with light monitors sloping to the north and a lower level sloping to the south. The roof is covered in wood shingles and corrugated metal. There are doors in all four elevations, but some are blocked. This building is in poor condition with gaps in some of the horizontal planking. It is connected to the pasture by a post and plank fence. During the dairy period, the building was modified. -continued- There is a small barn located south of the pasture and east of the coop. This contributing bam, built circa 1907, measures approximately 20 by 22 feet. It is a frame building which is sheathed in horizontal planks. There is one large opening on the west elevation. Just to the southwest of the coop is a 40-foot high cylindrical concrete silo. This contributing structure was one of two similar silos on the property. The other silo was further south and demolished when the milk plant was constructed. MILK PLANT The contributing milk plant was built in phases between 1950 and 1972. The current building is on a concrete foundation with seamed metal walls and a flat metal roof. The former milking parlor in the southwest comer is the oldest section. Next to it is a recessed hay shelter (facing west). Also on the west elevation are two loading docks with two-story roll-up doors. The mill<: depot door is on the north elevation, which housed a retail sales office. There are fIVe shorter loading doors on the north elevation. The east and south elevations have additional loading doors, but no public entrances. The complex has a roughly rectangular footprint of 150 feet by 238 feet. SHEEP SHED Directly west of the milk plant complex is another long frame shed (circa 1910). This contributing building appears to have been moved from the location of the milk plant to its current location around 1970. It may be the building that partially appears in a historic photograph near a sheep pen. The footprint is about 20 feet by 67 feet, with the wide end facing west. The building is sheathed in horizontal planks. The simple gable roof is longer on the east side and is clad in wood shingles. MISCELLANEAOUS RESOURCES The various parcels associated with the Fitzgerald farm and the Sher-Von Dairy include a number of historic objects and structures. Among these resources are historic plank and wire fences, irrigation ditches, cattle chutes, corrals, troughs, farm implements, etc. While these items contribute to the overall integrity of the property, most were not accessible and were therefore not included in the count of resources for this survey. The Fitzgerald House/Sher-Von Dairy complex is a multi-resource property with resources built between 1888 and 1972. The property includes seven contributing buildings and one contributing structure on two separate parcels. The property is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion A in the area of Agriculture as an example of a nineteenth-century farmstead that transitioned to a mid-century commercial dairy. Within the community of Draper, the property is notable for the large amount of undeveloped field and pasture land still associated with the farm and dairy. The individual resources contribute to the property in the area of Architecture, but no single resource would likely to be individually eligible for architectural significance. While the milk plant expansion was built outside of the period of Significance, the property meets most of the registration requirements ofthe Historic and Architectural Resources of Draper, Utah, 1849-1954, Multiple Property Submission (MPS). The resources fall within two associated historic contexts, the "Railroads, Mercantilism, and the Farming and Ranching Period, 1877-1917" and the "Twentieth-Century Community Development and the Poultry Industry Period, 19181954." The historic name of the property has been chosen to represent the three generations of Fitzgerald family members who lived in the house and the transformation of the entire property into the Sher-Von Dairy in the midtwentieth century. The land where the Fitzgerald House and Sher-Von Dairy are located is within the originally homestead patent acquired by Perry Fitzgerald. Perry Fitzgerald was born in Pennsylvania in 1815. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon Church) soon after his marriage to Mary Ann Casot in 1839. Perry Fitzgerald traveled with Brigham Young in the first company to arrive in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The Fitzgeralds lived in Salt Lake City, then in Millcreek. After his wife died, Elizabeth Draper took Perry's four young sons to live with her in Willow Creek (later Draper). Perry moved there and built a log cabin on the main creek. He married Ann Wilson, with whom he had two daughters, and later, Agnes Roylance Wadsworth. In the late 1860s, Perry built a brick house for Agnes and her thirteen children on Draper's main east-west road (later called Pioneer Road). The road ran through Perry's homestead, located in the SW Y. of the SE Y. of Section 29, Township 3 South, Range 1 E, part of his 240-acre homestead grant. The Perry and Agnes Fitzgerald House is located at 1144 E. Pioneer Road and was listed on the National Register in 2004 (NRIS #04000404). Perry raised sheep and cattle. He was also a horse breeder. Perry Fitzgerald became ill two years before his death in 1889. He gave his fourth child and second son, Benjamin Franklin Fitzgerald, some land on which to build a house prior to his marriage. The house was built on a lane off Pioneer Road in the center of the SW y. of the SE Y. of Section 29. Benjamin Franklin Fitzgerald was born on February 2, 1859, in Draper. Ben Fitzgerald married Martha Sophronia Rawlings on September 26, 1888. Sophronia was born in Draper on March 12, 1866. According to family records, the 1Yz-story brick house was built between July 14, 1888 and February 6,1889, by Jonathan C. Crapo. Jonathan Collins Crapo was born in Massachusetts in 1830. He emigrated to Utah in 1853 and spent time on the trail helping to repair wagons as a blacksmith. After his marriage to Emily Frances Burnham in 1859, Jonathan and Emily settled in Draper. He farmed, hauled logs, and helped to build the earliest schools, churches and homes in Draper. The Ben and Sophronia Fitzgerald house appears to have been his last construction job in Draper. Around that time, the Crapo family moved to a ranch near Parker, Idaho, in search of more land. Jonathan C. Crapo died in Parker in 1911. 5 HISTORY 1128 E. Pioneer Road, Draper, Salt Lake County, Utah page 6 -continuedBenjamin Franklin Fitzgerald continued his father's farm and livestock interests. Ben and Sophronia had two sons born in 1890 and 1891 . Unfortunately, Martha Sophronia Fitzgerald died suddenly in October 16, 1892. In 1896, Ben married Mary Ann Garff, who was born in Riverton, Utah, on December 28, 1871.2 Ben and Mary Ann had four daughters and two sons, born between 1898 and 1909. Benjamin Fitzgerald officially received the deed to his property from the estate of his mother, Agnes Fitzgerald, in 1904. Ben and Mary Ann expanded their home twice, once in 1909 and again in 1912. Ben raised cattle and sheep. One historic photograph of the farm shows their oldest son, McKinley "Mack" Fitzgerald tending sheep with his youngest sister, Afton. The 1910 census of the Fitzgerald family gives an indication of their prosperity. The household included Sophronia's two sons, Mary Ann's eight children, a domestic servant, Celia Webb, and two hired hands, Aaron Garff and John Sanders. Only the family was listed on the 1920 census. A family tragedy occurred in December 1922, when Mack's sister Roylance was shot in the neck during an attempted carjacking and was paralyzed. Agnes Roylance Fitzgerald died in May 1923 at home while recovering from her injury. Ben and Mary Ann moved to Salt Lake City in 1925. Benjamin Franklin Fitzgerald died on March 22, 1931 . Mary Ann Garff Fitzgerald died on July 1, 1949. They are buried in the Draper Cemetery. On March 3, 1929, Benjamin F. and Mary A. Fitzgerald deeded the Draper farm to their son, Mack. McKinley "Mack" Fitzgerald was born on July 29, 1898. On June 24, 1925, Mack married Marilla Sandberg . Marilla was born in St. George, Utah, on January 25, 1890. Marilla was a nurse who had taken care of Roylance at the Fitzgerald home after she was injured . Mack took over the family farm and ranching operations. In the late 1920s Mack added chicken coops during a period when raising poultry played a dominant role in Draper's economy. During the depression, Mack decided that dairy cows could supplement the family's income. Mack and Marilla had four sons born between 1925 and 1929. All four boys grew up milking cows. On the 1930 census, the household includes a hired hand, Dell Prince, who had immigrated from France as a child . Mack and Marilla had four sons. Their second son, Sherman Sandberg Fitzgerald, born on July 29, 1926, had a passion for the family farm . As a young man, he participated in Future Farmers of America (FFA). During World War II, Sherman was granted farm deferments until 1943 when he joined the US Navy as an aviation radio operator. After the war, Sherman returned to the family farm . He met LaVonne Palmquist on a blind date. LaVonne Rosamond Palmquist was born in Salt Lake City on June 4, 1929. Sherman and LaVonne were married on January 28, 1950. The couple lived on 700 East in Draper for one month before moving into the family farmhouse, which was remodeled to accommodate the two families. Mack Fitzgerald died on January 1, 1960. Marilla Fitzgerald died on December 11, 1971. Sherman and LaVonne had five children . In 1962, Sherman and LaVonne established the Sher-Von Dairy. The milk processing plant was built around this time. They sold bottled milk to distributors and also had a milk depot for customers to buy milk directly from the farm. The Sher-Von Dairy sold half-gallon and pint bottles of milk, as well as 8-oz. cartons to local schools. Sherman Fitzgerald was the second-longest serving member of the Draper IrrigationlWaterPro board of directors (1963-2011). It was a position held by both his father, Mack, and his grandfather, Benjamin Fitzgerald. In 1972, the Sher-Von Dairy incorporated with a name change to KDK, Inc. The switch to plastic bottles occurred soon after. The Salt Lake County Farm Bureau cited the Draper farm as the oldest single-family farm still in production, beginning 140 years earlier with the Perry Fitzgerald homestead . It was recognized as a Utah Century Farm in 1996. The Draper Historical SOCiety honored Sherman Fitzgerald as a Modern Draper Pioneer in 2002. That year, KDK Inc., sold their last bottle of milk on May 31,2002. The milk plant and other outbuildings are currently vacant. Sherman Fitzgerald died on October 5, 2012. LaVonne Palmquist Fitzgerald died on November 13, 2017. The property remains in the Fitzgerald family. 6 PHOTOGRAPHS 1128 E. SHERMAN SANDBERG and LAVONNE R. PALAMQUIST FITZGERALD Sherman (Sherm) Sandberg Fitzgerald is a direct decent of Perry Fitzgerald, a scout who came West in the historic trek with Brigham Young. He was in John Higbee's company and entered the Valley of the Great Salt Lake on July 24, 1847. Perry Fitzgerald married his 3rd wife, Agnes Wadsworth, on March 21, 1853. In 1851 Perry moved to Draper and established a permanent home. It was a large log cabin built along the creek. This large log cabin had an upper story loft and probably a fire pit. Agnes gave birth to five of their 13 children here. A terrific storm came and flooded the area; Perry moved the cabin farther north, where it later served as Perry's barn and stood for over 125 years. Eventually it was carefully dismantled and marked so it could be rebuilt as an original log cabin which is displayed at the Draper Park by the Perry Fitzgerald descendants. During the early 1860's Perry built a new house 50 yards to the East of the log cabin and it wasn't adobe or a log cabin, but the first brick home built south of 6400 South. Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Fitzgerald, born February 2, 1859, died March 3, 1931, was the fourth child of 13 children born to Perry and Agnes Fitzgerald. He married Mary Ann Garff, born May 28, 1871, in Riverton Utah, died July 1, 1949, on February 2, 1896. From July 14, - 188lf, - ro~) February 6, 1889, Jonanthan C. Crapo built the home that is deseretnews.com OESERET NEWS WWW EDITION .~~~. Happy 50th Anniversary Sherman Sandberg Fitzgerald and laVonne Fitzgerald celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their children and. grandchildren. They were married on January 28. 1950. Since then. they have resided in Draper. Utah. located at 1128 E. 12400 S. (now Pioneer Rd.) This home was just west of the original log cabin which now stands at Ann Fit z g era I d Draper Park. Benjamin and Mary raised their children in this home, as did McKinley and Marilla Fitzgerald, and Sherman and LaVonne Fitzgerald. McKinley (Mack) Garff Fitzgerald was the 2nd child of Benjamin and Mary Ann, born on July 29, 1898. He married Marilla Sandberg, born January 25, 1890, in the Salt Lake - ---Temple on June 25, 1924. Mack met Marilla, who was a in the Salt Lake Temple on June 21, 1960. They had five children: Sherman Kent Fitzgerald, August 29, 1950; Karen Fitzgerald, December 16, 1951; Lowell Darwin Fitzgerald, November 18, 1952; Kevin Floyd Fitzgerald, April 18, 1954; and Karleen Fitzgerald, July 26, 1955. Sherman and LaVonne lived on 10600 South 700 East for one month, and then moved into the Fitzgerald home on 1128 E. 12400 So., now Pioneer Road, Draper, with Sherm's parents Mack and Marilla. The home was remodeled to accommodate two families. Sherman and his. father Mack continued to farm and milk cows. Mack died at home from cancer of the liver on January 1, 1960. Marilla resided in the home until she died on December 11, 1971. In 1962 Sherman and LaVonne formed Sher-Von Dairy. They then built an up to date milk processing plant with a milking parlor for the cows. They sold bottled milk to distributors and had a Milk Depot located on the farm for the public to purchase milk. During that time milk was in glass bottles. They bottled glass % gallons and pints, also 8 oz. milk cartons for schools. In 1972 they incorporated and changed the name to KDK Inc. The conversion was made to plastiC milk containers. The business continued to grow and their products were available in many stores. KDK shut down operations and sold their last milk product on May 31,2002. In 1996 the Utah Century Farm and Ranch committee hereby recognized the farm with official designation as a Utah Century Farm & Ranch. This was awarded the 15th day of May in the year 1996, for 100 years of perseverance. On January 20, 2002, the Draper Historical SOciety acknowledged Sherman Fitzgerald as a Modern Draper Pioneer for operating a farm started by Perry Fitzgerald in 1851 , and maintaining the continuous family ownership: Benjamin Franklin Fitzgerald, McKinley Garff Fitzgerald and now Sherman Fitzgerald. Operation of that farm is a true feat in this day of corporate agriculture. This award was presented on January 28, 1998. On July 20, 2002, Sherman was honored to be the Grand Marshal of Draper Days Parade, celebrating the pioneers trek on July 24, 1847. Sherman has been a director on the Draper Irrigation registered nurse, when she came to care for Mack's sister, Roylance, who was on a date with her fiance, Rodney Cushing, when fleeing robbers leaped from their car when they were stopped at the Draper Crossroads. Their car fled and the robber's sedan pursued shooting at the car. Roylance received a bullet in her spine. Marilla came to care for Roylance during the week and went home on the weekends. Mack would take Marilla back and forth to the bus stop. Roylance died five months later. Mack and Marilla had four boys: McKinley Reid Fitzgerald, born March 27, 1925, died June 19, 2003; Sherman Sandberg Fitzgerald, born July 29, 1926; Vaughn Garff Fitzgerald, born December 17, 1927; Boyd Franklin Fitzgerald, born January 31, 1929. Sherman (Sherm), as a young boy worked on the farm. His father Mack decided that having dairy cows could bring in a lot more needed income for the family. Therefore, Sherm and his brothers also began milking cows. Sherm attended Draper Elementary 1st thru gth grade. He then went to Jordan High School. They were called the Beetdiggers. School colors were gray and maroon. Sherm attended the 10th thru 12th grade. He played basketball, was a member of the Athletic Club and belonged to Future Farmers of America (FFA.) He entered a heifer in the Utah State Fair his senior year and the heifer received 1st place in Junior Dairy Cattle. He was beat out of Grand Champion by a mature cow which is only reasonable. After the judging he stayed at the fair, the bam floors were cleared and they had a dance. Sherm was granted three or four farm deferments before Uncle Sam finally decided it was time for him to serve his country in 1943. Sherm became an aviation radioman at a Memphis training school. He served in the Navy during World War fl. He was on the destroyer Charlie R. Ware 00865. He still remembers his serial number to this day. When Sherm returned home from the war he bought a 1947 dark blue Champion Studebaker. He met his wife, LaVonne R. Palmquist, from Salt Lake City, born June 4, 1929, on a blind date. LaVonne graduated from Granite High School. She was working at Kress's five and dime store.
