Title The Power of Virtual Reality to Invoke Empathy and Resolve Conflict in the Workplace
Date 2018
Description Virtual reality is an ever-growing area of interest in the technology sector. Scientists entrepreneurs, and consumers alike have been imagining the capabilities of this technology as we know it since as early as the 1930s. As computers advanced and became more mainstream, the video game industry began promoting the idea of a "virtual experience"; one in which a user could be disconnected from reality, or supplanted into a new one. One could say that the pinnacle of gaming is a fully immersive, virtual experience. Now, we are learning that virtual reality is a multipurpose tool, and so much more than just an entertainment platform. An immersive, virtual experience has been used for training purposes across disciplines. Proponents claim it has the power to elicit change in emotional responses in a way that no other two or three-dimensional medium can. In the paper, the reader will learn whether virtual reality is more effective at eliciting empathic responses in individuals when compared to using traditional two-dimensional video. And more specifically, if virtual reality can be an effective tool at resolving workplace conflict.
