Description The mechanism of indirect traumatic optic neuropathy, based on laser interferometer study of cadaver crania, is presumed to occur by force transmission through bone.1 We propose an alternate mechanism, i.e., the amplification of a soft tissue shock wave within the orbit. When travelling through the conical orbital space in an anterior to posterior direction, amplification theoretically occurs with a magnitude inversely proportional to cross sectional area. This study investigates the mechanism and location of tissue damage in indirect traumatic optic neuropathy.
