Description The high metabolic demand of the afferent and efferent visual systems makes them particularly susceptible to mitochondrial dysfunction. Over a third of patients with mitochondrial disease harbor eye conditions that can cause significant morbidity. Herein we describe the most common ophthalmic manifestations that should raise suspicion of mitochondrial disease and briefly describe management principles.
