Description |
Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition typically characterized by an initial acute inflammatory phase, followed by a fibrotic phase that may affect orbital tissues and extraocular muscles. It is usually associated with hyperthyroidism(85%), but may occur in euthyroid (5%) or hypothyroid (10%) individuals. The annual adjusted incidence rate is 16 women and 3 men per 100,000 population. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of TED by 7-8 times. |
