| OCR Text | Show Commuter Survey- Fall 2014 Executive Summary This is the second annual comprehensive commuter survey at the University of Utah, and similar transportation surveys are widely used at other universities. The data from this survey is used to create the GHG Inventory and for STARS reporting, which help to track progress in sustainability. This data can also be used in the Transportation Master Plan and for other strategic efforts from Commuter Services. In this survey, students, faculty, and staff were asked about their commuting habits to the University. Fall 2014 Commuting Facts 696,779 miles are traveled one way each day to the University of Utah. 53% of the campus population travels in a single‐occupancy vehicle (SOV), followed by 37.5% that travels via UTA, including TRAX, FrontRunner, and bus. If driving were not an option, SOV drivers would take UTA; the top two reasons for not taking UTA were convenience and time. 62% of respondents travel to the University on Tuesday, making it the busiest commute day of the week. 89% of respondents chose walking as their preferred method of transportation on campus. 23% Prefer using the campus shuttle. Red is the most popular shuttle route, followed by Blue, then Black. South main campus is the most popular campus destination. The following graph breaks down the percentage of users per mode by association and miles traveled. During the Fall 2014 semester, Staff made up 25% of the total miles traveled by single occupancy vehicle (SOV), followed by Undergraduates at 15%. As the top two users of SOVs, staff and undergraduates provide the largest opportunity for behavioral changes in commuting, and can be targeted in future surveys for this purpose. Statistics In order for the survey to have statistical significance, we needed at least the following participation: Students: At least 1,024 respondents out of 25,135 in order to have a 95% confidence level and margin of error of +/‐ 3%. Faculty: At least 764 respondents out of 2,689 in order to have a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of +/‐ 3%. Staff: At least 994 respondents out of 14,405 in order to have a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of +/‐ 3%. From the survey, we had statistically significant results for all three groups: Students: 21% of the total student population, which is 4,308 more students than were needed for significance, took the survey. We can be 95% certain that these responses can be extrapolated to the entire student body, +/‐ .97%. Faculty: 61% of the total faculty population, which is 883 more faculty responses than needed for significance, took the survey. We can be 95% certain that these responses can be extrapolated to the faculty population, +/‐1.47 %. Staff: 31% of the total staff population, which is 3,478 more staff response than needed for significance, took the survey. We can be 95% certain that these responses can be extrapolated to the staff population, +/‐ 1.13% Distances and Modes of Transit The following graph shows the number of miles traveled by different modes in a typical day during the inbound commute. Personal vehicles account for the most miles traveled to the University, followed by UTA. During the Fall 2014 semester, the average number per person of inbound miles traveled in a day was 16.5. Extrapolated to the entire University of Utah population, this equates to a total of 696,779 miles traveled each day to the University. Commuting to and from a destination is considered to be two trips. There was confusion among respondents about what a commuting trip was. Because of this, these numbers may not accurately reflect the actual number of commuting trips taken, and commuting trips were assumed to be 2 per day of commute (inbound and outbound).
