Show Commuter Survey- Fall 2013 Overview This comprehensive commuter survey is the first of its kind at the University of Utah, and similar transportation surveys are widely used at other universities. The data from this survey is used to create the GHG Inventory and for STARS reporting, which help to track progress in sustainability. In this survey, students, faculty, and staff were asked about their commuting habits to the University. Number of Survey Takers 9971 5,157 3514 892 Students Faculty Staff Total Of the 47,090 Students, Faculty, and Staff at the University of Utah, 9,971 took the commuter survey. 28.4% of the total faculty population, 20.3% of the total student population, and 19% of the total staff population took this survey. Questions asked on the Survey: 1. For each of the 2013 semesters, whatʹs your association with the University of Utah? You must select an answer for each of the three semesters. Choose the best one. 2. Did you live on campus for the 2013 semesters? For the semesters in which you did live on campus, use the picklist to indicate which campus housing was your residence (or if not listed, specify your housing in the blank text box). 3. For each 2013 semester, select the campus destination of your inbound commute. Choose all that apply. 4. If your Inbound Campus Destination included a Satellite Location, please indicate that location in the text box for each semester. 5. For your inbound commute, what is the zip code where you begin your trip? 6. Total commute trips (inbound + outbound) per day: 7. Which mode of transportation do you use to get to campus each day in these semesters during your inbound and outbound commutes? 8. How different are your commutes in each semester? Explain how each semester commute in unique. 9. If you used a personal vehicle to commute, enter your Miles Per Gallon (MPG) number below. If the number is the same for each semester displayed, please repeat the number. If you used a separate auto for different semesters, use the MPG Calculator to arrive at an MPG for each vehicle. 10. Are you driving an EV or all Electric Vehicle (not a gas/electric hybrid)? Check the EV box below for the semesters where you had an affiliation with the University. 11. What is your gender? 12. What is your age? Statistics In order for the survey to have statistical significance, we needed at least the following participation: Students: At least 1,024 respondents out of 25,453 in order to have a 95% confidence level and margin of error of +/‐ 3%. Faculty and Staff: At least 1,009 respondents out of 18,498 staff and at least 797 of 3,139 faculty in order to have a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of +/‐ 3%. From the survey, we had statistically significant results for all three groups: Students: Over 4,000 more students than were needed for significance took the survey. We can be 95% certain that these responses can be extrapolated to the entire student body, +/‐ 1.22%. Faculty: There were nearly 100 more faculty responses than needed for significance. We can be 95% certain that these responses can be extrapolated to the faculty population, +/‐ 2.78%. Staff: About 2,500 more staff took the survey than were required for significance. We can be 95% certain that these responses can be extrapolated to the staff population, +/‐ 1.49% Distances and Mode of Transit Vehicle Miles Traveled per Week, One‐Way 1,600,000.00 1,400,000.00 1,200,000.00 Miles 1,000,000.00 800,000.00 600,000.00 400,000.00 200,000.00 0.00 Drive Alone/with Children Under 16 Carpool/Vanpool UTA (TRAX, Bus, Frontrunner) Via foot, Bicycle, Skateboard U Campus Shuttle bus Students 583,994.53 73,106.48 417,379.69 58,138.93 14,923.39 Faculty 89,659.74 9,045.61 24,434.36 7,838.97 205.85 Staff 868,420.74 148,340.40 346,795.31 25,405.02 1,017.58 *Please note: the above numbers only reflect miles traveled to campus and do not reflect those who do not come to campus any given day of the week, which for faculty is 5.05% on average, staff: 2.89%, students: 9.07% Miles per One‐Way Trip 16 14 Miles 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 Students Faculty Staff Average Total The average miles per gallon of the vehicles used for transit was 24.5. During Spring and Fall semesters, 5.4 million miles were commuted to and from campus each week with an estimated yearly mileage of 143.8 million miles. 5.4 million miles is the same as traveling around the Earth 216 times, or traveling to the moon and back 11.27 times. Zip Code Distribution Validation of GHG Inventory While the total percentages and miles commuted estimated in the past years were not accurate reflections as compared to the survey, the differences in numbers ended up evening out.
