Nine athletes compete in the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Stanford University on Friday. One athlete qualified for the NCAA outdoor championship and two others had three first place finishes between them. Senior Jeff Simonich qualified for nationals in the 5,000 meters. His time of 13:44.59 gave him a ninth place finish at the meet and broke his own school record by five seconds. Simonich qualified for the NCAA's in the 1,500 earlier this season. Senior Amy Tidwell had a phenomenal day as she finished first in two events. Tidwell won the 400 meter event (53.71) and the long jump (19'10.75"). She has already qualified for the outdoor national championships in both events. Senior Stacey Rhineer was the other Ute winner placing first in the triple jump. Her jump of 40'07.50" broke the school record which she owned by one inch. Elisha Kekacs placed third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.67). She too set a new school record for Utah. The previous mark was 1:02.12. Chantel Goldsberry placed ninth in the hammer throw (139'10") and Mindy Romig placed sixth in the javelin throw (142'02"). Larry Stanley competed for Utah in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He finished 25th with a time of 9:14.48. Travis Hildebrand (14:14.37) and Chris Merkely (14:45.82) also competed in the 5,000 meter event finishing 21st and 35th respectively. |
