Final Score The University of Utah track and field team came away four All-conference honors and two individual conference champions at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships this weekend in Colorado. The women's team placed eighth overall in the WAC with the men taking 11th. Head Coach Mike Jones, who had anticipated low team scores, was happy with the athletes individual performances. Senior Stacey Rhineer brought home two All-conference titles by placing third in the long jump (19'06.75") and first in the triple jump (42'04.75"). Rhineer came from behind to win the triple jump giving her the conference title. "She was in second place going into her last jump," said Jones. "She improved by a foot with this jump so it appears that she could go to the national championships." Rhineer also placed fourth in the high jump (5'09.25") and set a new school record in the triple jump, a record she previously held (41'09.25"). Junior Amy Tidwell placed fifth in the pentathlon (3,550), improving on her last score by almost 200 points and moving her into second place on Utah's all-time list. Tidwell also placed fourth in the long jump (19'02.50"). "She made a two foot improvement in her long jump and was just phenomenal in the pentathlon," said Jones. In the women's weight throw, senior Katherina Fatafehi placed sixth overall (58'03.00") with freshman Audrey Kiser placing ninth (53'07.00"). Alisha Worthley, improving her personal best by two feet, placed 12th. Fatafehi shattered her own school record by more than five feet. Kiser also had a ninth place finish in the shot put (43"03.75"), moving her into second place on Utah's all-time list. Senior Jeff Simonich won the men's 3,000 meter event (8:45.90) and the conference title, with junior Chris Merkley finishing third (8:52.02). Both earned All-conference honors. Also in the 3,000 was junior Luke Mercier who placed 15th (9:12.87) and sophomore Adam Stark came in 20th (9:15.30). In the 5,000 meters, senior Dane Miller placed ninth (15:49.53) and junior Travis Hildebrand placed tenth(15:52.64). "Travis held the lead up to the last lap and then just ran out of gas," said Jones.
