In the following sections "S" will be used to denote significant buildings, "C" will be used to denote contributory buildings, and "NC" will be used to denote non-contributory buildings. Each of the , following sites was re-eva1uated as follows: Site 4 59-61-67 East Center Orig Eval: C .~ . Current Eval: NC The original facade of Site 4 has been completely covered by a modern store front, therefore it no longer maintains its original massing and character. Its evaluation was therefore changed from contributory to non-contributory. '. Site 19 16 West Center Orig Eval: C Current Eval: NC The original facade of Site 19 has been completely covered by a modern store front, therefore it no longer maintains its original massing and character. Its evaluation was therefore changed from contributory to non-contributory_ Site 26 68 West Center Orig Eval: C " Current Eval: NC The original facade of Site 26 has been completely covered bya modern store front, therefore it no longer maintains its original massing and character. Its e.valuation was therefore changed from contributory to non-contributory. Site 33 120-116-112-110 Orig Eval: C Current Eval: NC West Center The original facade of Site 33 has been completely covered by a modern store front, therefore it no longer maintains its original massing and character. Its evaluation was therefore changed from contributory to non-contributo~. Site 44 190-186 West Center Orig Eval: S Current Eval: C The application of a l~er of plaster and decorative half timbering, characteristic of the English Tudor style, and the addition of ceramic tiles and metal doors in the store front area, associated with the Art Moderne " style, have destroyed the original character of Site 44. It therefore does not maintain a level of integrity that qualifies it as a significant site. Because the original massing, openings, transom, and decorative brackets under the eaves are still i ntac t, however, it contri butes to the overa 11 character of the district, and therefore has been re-evaluated as a contributo~ building. Si te 51 236-232 West Center Orig Eval: C Current Eval: NC* Because there is no record of the appearance of the original facade of Site 51, it is difficult to determine if it maintains its original integrity. Dating from 1921, it could well have been designed as a Spanish Colonial Revival style building, although use of that style for commercial buildings " was rather uncommon. It is more likely that the Spanish Colonial Revival style facade was applied to Site 51 and to Site 50 to the east at the same time, obliterating both original facades. *If the assumption proves to be correct, the contributory evaluation should be changed to a non-contributo~ evaluation. If, however, it can be proved that this building was originally designed as a Spanish Colonial Revival Style building, its contributory " evaluation would continue to be appropriate. Site 57 288 (286) W. Center Ortg Eval: S Current Eval: C Site 57 was originally evaluated as a significant site, however, judging by the historical information available and its appearance, it is neither historically nor architecturally significant. Because the building maintains its original massing and some of the original decorative elements, it contributes to the overall character of the district and therefore has been re-eva1uated as a contributory building. Si te 58 290 W. Center Orig Eva1: S Current Eva1: C Site 58 was originally evaluated as a significant site. however. judging by the historical information available and its appearance, it is neither historically nor architecturally significant. Because the building maintains its original massing and some of the original decorative elements, it contributes to the overall character of the district and therefore has been re-eva1uated as a contributory building. Site 62 255 West Center Orig Eva1: C Current Eva1: NC The original facade of Site 62 has been completely covered by a modern store front, therefore it no longer maintains its original massing and character. Its evaluation was therefore changed from contributory to non-contributory. 3. No specific evaluation was listed on the forms of several of the sites. An evaluation, however, was reflected on a large map of the district which may be found in the map case in the Preservation Research office. 33-35 North University Map Eval: C Site 15 has been evaluated as a significant building because well example 'of the Art Deco style within the district. Building (29-33) was built about 1900 (Rodger Farrer, president; James R. Farrer assistant manager; John W. Farrer, secretary-treasurer and manager). It is evident from available photographs that the building remained standing until the 1940s. "" , • "" " 1.,._°, ' . ' ,", • . •1 .• _ ' :'-- _ _.' _ ", _ ___ .
