I- () (Include additions, alterations , ancillary structures, and landscaping if applicable) w l- i () This structure is in two parts--both of which are articulated with different windows, cornice, and ornamental treatments to give the appearance of separate structures. The south corner building remains unchanged on the upper facade except for painting. The segmented windows, horizontal band and triangle ornamental is entact. The lower facade has been altered. The string of narrow tall windows have been either filled in, covered over, or removed. A sign hides the transition between the two facades. Aluminum siding has been used and the entrance has been reworked. The former saloon area has been less altered, although the Renaissance Revival elements on the lower floor--arched windows, rusticated, vary-colored brick have been de-emphasized with glass and brick filling in the windows and paint covering the brick. Hines. About 1885 Russel S. Hines, who had made his money in the Tintic mines, built and opened a drug store and saloon--the Palace. About 1890 he rebuilt the structure to its present shape. The I.O.O.F. of Provo (organized 1889, the first such fraternal order in Provo) of which Hines was a member, had their hall on the second floor. In 1893 Hines rebuilt the second floor to create a rooming house. At Hines' death his drug store continued in operation, managed by the Hedquist Brothers (Charles and Alex). It eventually became a Hedquist Drug Store managed by Alex, another of Provo's successful and important merchants. Restaurants have operated in the former saloon area. In 1905 Hugh McGean and George Johnston opened the Vienna Cafe. By 1911 Spencer H. Clay operated the restaurant. FEB-20-35 FRI 13:56 HOVA 104 West Center R.
