This single family residence consists of a Victorian Eclectic style home constructed to house the pump house manager and his family. It is constructed on a sandstone block foundation with brick walls, which have been covered with vinyl siding. The rectangular block type home is topped by a pyramidal roof and a gabled front bay. The front bay is covered with fishscale shingles. The main entrance is set back beneath and protected by an inset porch, and originally entered directly into a living room. A small dormer is present on the fa~ade of the pyramidal roof which is currently covered with siding with no evidence of the original vent. All of the doors (30" wide by 80" high) are modem replacements. Two of the original windows are present along the front (south) elevation, and consist oflarge one-over-one double hung windows with a blank lower pane below and a patterned pain above. The windows measure 48" wide and 60" tall. Storm windows were installed over these windows. The remaining windows are modem vinyl one-over-one double hung replacements. Modem decorative shutters were added to each of the windows. A substantial addition was constructed onto the rear portion of the house in 1991, increasing the overall footprint of the structure by 50%. The addition is topped by a hipped roof which sits substantially lower than the original roofline. Three outbuildings are associated with the residence. The first building is an outhouse made from the same brick used in the construction of the garage and workshop. It was a two hole outhouse with a cement foundation and was constructed about 1925. The second building, located directly adjacent (to the east) of the outhouse, is a small, tongue and groove wood paneled bam. Originally this small bam was built as a chicken coop (ca. 1930) but later converted to a storage bam. The third building was built around 1925 with brick and cement foundation. This building was the pressure pump house to provide culinary water to the nearby residence. 5 HISTORY Date of Construction : 1902 Architect/Builder: Jam es H. Gardner & M. W. The Utah Lake Pump Station manager' s residence was constructed adjacent to the original pump house in 1902. The pump station was established to supplement water flow into the Jordan River to maintain water levels required for irrigation upstream . The pump station complex was approved by the Salt Lake City Council during the spring of 1902, and a construction contract was obtained by the Lehi Sugar Factory. The Victorian Eclectic residence was constructed on a sandstone block foundation with brick walls and a pyramidal roof. The first substantial alteration to the structure occurred in 1991 with the construction of an addition onto the rear (north) elevation. This addition was noted on a historic site form completed for the pump house in 1997 (Miller). The addition resulted in the near complete removal of the north wall of the house, and an increase in square footage by nearly 50%. The interior of the house was completely renovated at this time, with many of the interior walls removed , and at least one interior door covered up. What was likely a living room or parlor was converted into a modern kitchen, with an adjacent common or family room which extends into the addition. The west side of the house, to include the portion contained within the gabled bay, was reconfigured into an office and bedrooms. A portion of the original rear (north) wall remains within one of these bedrooms, with the window opening converted into a book shelf. The addition contains a bedroom as well as several bathrooms, a laundry room , and a small office. All of the exterior doors were likely replaced at this time. Though the 1997 site form indicates the brick walls of the home were still exposed at that time, the home has since been covered in vinyl siding to match that on the addition. The windows on the east and west elevations were replaced with modern vinyl double hung windows, and stonn windows were installed over the original windows on the front of the home. The small Palladian window over the projecting bay was evidently removed entirely at this time, with fish scale shingles covering the alteration. A vent in the small donner present on the fa~ade of the pyramidal roof was also covered with vinyl siding.
