The c. 1878 Samuel Nephi and Sarah Sixsmith Skinner House is located on the north side of 1200 South in Orem. It consists of the original brick hall-parlor house and a series of additions to the north and west. The side-gabled brick hall-parlor house has Classical styling elements shown in its raking cornice, cornice returns in the gable ends, and symmetrical three bay fayade with a central door and windows on either side. A newer, possibly c. J980, large striated brick external chinmey dominates the east elevation . An original single window opening with a lintel of header bricks was enlarged to the north at an unknown date (c. 1915) to accommodate a pair of windows. The pair to the south of the chimney is double-hung two-over-six windows with wooden sash. The windowsills are wooden and the brick of the walls is laid in a common bond with flush mortar. The brick crosswing addition to the north (c. 1900?) has a steeply pitched hip roofwith walls also laid in a stretcher bond. It is the first of the additions to the north and west of the original house. A frame gable-roofed section to the north has its ridgeline parallel to that of the hall-parlor structure. The original hall-parlor structure has had the north section of its gable roof raised and the new area on the gable end filled with wooden siding. A c. 1970 shed-roofed open porch on the north elevation has metal supports . To the west is a frame shed-roofed addition with exposed rafter tails and a single small wooden-sash double-hung window on the west elevation . A more steeply gabled small addition (c. 1950?) protrudes to the west with a centered single window on its west elevation . The southwest comer appears to have been a carport l and is now a living area. It has vinyl sash double hung windows . An open c. 1990 shed-roofed porch with decorative metal supports stretches across the entire fa9ade including the original hall parlor section as well as the enclosed carport. 5 mSTORY Archi tect/Bui !der: wlknown Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with (see instructions for details) £Agriculture _Economics _Architecture _Education _A rcheology _Engineering Art Entertainment/ _Commerce Recreation _Communi cati ons _Ethnic Heritage _Community Planning .£Exploration/ & Development Settlement _Conservation _Health/lvJedicine Date of Construction: c. 1878 2 "S" or "C" (S = Significant, C _Industry _Invention _Landscape Architecture _Law Literature _Maritime History = contributing). _Politics/ Government _Religion _Science _Social History _Transportation _Other ~ilitary _Performing Arts Write a chronological history of the property, fOCUSing primarily on the original or principal owners & significant events. Government presumably containing the house that he built earlier. Samuel Nephi was born in 1847 in Glenwood, Iowa, to Horace Billings and Eleanore Cease Skinner and married Sarah Jane Sixsmith in 1875 in Provo. They were among the early settlers in Orem, moving to the Provo Bench in 1877-8. I 2 From the Utah County Assessors Office Land Infonnation Display System. Date is from the Utah COlmty Assessors Office. Early stories describe his efforts clearing sagebrush from the land for $1 .25 an acres and then selling the sagebrush for $1 .00 a pound in the 1870s.3 Samuel died in Provo in 1929 and Sarah Skinner in 1931. In 1888 they sold five acres containing the house for $120 to Ephraim Skinner, Samuel's half-brother. Ephraim was the son of Horace Billings Skinner and a second polygamous wife, Jane Johnson Skinner, and was born in Provo in 1871. He married Rebecca King in 1900 and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was educated in the Provo schools, lived there his entire life and died there in 1942. Ephraim Skinner sold five acres to Daniel K. Bunnell for $275 in 1892. Daniel Bunnell was born in Michigan in 1837 and went with his parents to Nauvoo, Illinois, as a child. They then crossed the plains to Utah with Captain Snow's party. He sold the five-acre piece to Jessie Girdwood Patterson Reid for $1,000 in 1896. Daniel Bunnell died at his home on the Provo Bench in 1919. Ten years later Jessie G. P . Reid sold the five-acre parcel and other lands to William H. and Emma Hirst. Emma was born in Witwood, England, in 1858 and converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) there. She came to Utah in 1881 where she met and married William Henry Hirst, also a native of England, in Salt Lake City in 1882. She moved to Provo from Coalville in 1903 and lived there until her death in 1941 . She was active in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church activities; serving for forty years as a Relief Society teacher and in Primary work. In 1907 they sold 26.10 acres ofland to E.A. Menlove. William H. Hirst died at age fifty-nine as a result of an accident in a coal mine in 1914. E .A. Menlove was a photographer in Provo. Ernest Alfred (E.A.) was born in St. Albans, England, in 1876, a son of Joseph and Ann Streeton Menlove. He was a member of the LDS Church and the high priests' quorum of Utah Stake. E.A. married Inez Daniels Selman in Salt Lake City in 1897. Inez was born in 1878 in Payson to Mormon V. and Louisa 1. Daniels Selman. 4 Her parents owned the neighboring house to the east at 175 East 1200 South in Orem from 1908-1919. Inez was a Provo resident from 1907 to her death in 1960. E.A. Menlove died in Provo in 1930. In 1910 they sold the 26.20-acre property to George A. Brown who, seven months later, sold to Henry W. Davis. Henry William Davis was a native of Provo, born in 1869. In 1900 he married an Irish immigrant from Balleyshannon, Charlotte (Lottie) Nelson, in Provo. The Davis family moved to Orem in 1910. They had eight children together5 before Henry Davis' death in Orem in 1928. Lottie Davis lived in Orem the rest of her life, only leaving to spend her last two years in San Bernadino, California, where she died in 1945. In 1954 the property went to their son, Lewis N . Davis, who was living in the house at the time of his death in 1957. Lewis Nelson Davis was born in Provo in 1905 and lived in Orem since the age offive. He married Evelyn Nielson in Manti in 1933. He worked during his life as a plumber and carpenter. The house remained in the Davis family until 1978 when it turned over once before being purch~sed by Julie F . and Brigham S. Young. The Youngs sold in 1989 to the current owner, Carolyn 1. Prolwski. Weeks, p. 7. Her obituary gives her name as Inez Selman Daniels Menlove. 5 LDS Family History Library, Ancestral File. 3 4 'SL<..
