There are no outbuildings. The structure appears to retain much of its historic and architectural integrity. However, the front posts and shutter treatment were likely added more recently. It is therefore given a "B" rating based on the UHCS guidelines, and is recommended eligible as it meets criterion C of the NRHP. Use continuation sheets as necessary. The subject property is a single-family bungalow in a rural area of Mapleton, an incorporated city of7,000 eight miles south of Provo, in Utah County. The house faces 1600 West, also known as US-89, and is located on the southeast comer ofUS-89 and SR-147 (locally noted as 1600 South). Several frame outbuildings are located near the home, ranging from an open hay bam, shed-roof buildings and a gable-fronted garage or shed facing 1600 South, on the north edge of the property. A wood post and wire fence borders the property on the west and north boundaries of the lot; a solid wood fence separates the yard of the house and outbuildings from the pasture to the east. Utah County Recorder's information states that this house was constructed in 1920. The massing and form remain similar to the residence seen in an earlier photograph, and consist of a front-gabled structure with a similar porch gable slightly lower than the ridge of the house. The roof shape at the rear is a hip. Alterations to the house include the use of non-historic synthetic siding, the replacement of windows and the application of non-historic ornamentation such as non-functional shutters. US-89 has been widened, as evidenced when comparing the relationship between the house and the road in the historic photograph with recent images. Despite these alterations, the house maintains much of its historic integrity, and is readily identifiable as a rural dwelling constructed in the fITst few decades of the twentieth century. The synthetic siding is similar to the original in orientation and width; the size and orientation of the window openings have not been altered, and the shutters do not detract from the ability ofthe passer-by to discern the home's earlier appearance. Although it is hard to make out from the historic photograph, it appears that the metal porch supports, which include insets of tulip silhouettes, have not been altered. Despite the loss of some of the front yard, the property continues to retain its rural setting and ambience and to convey its agrarian use. 5 mS'!'ORY Architect/Builder: unknown Historic Themes: Mark themes related to this property with (see instructions for details) ~Agriculture _Economics ~Architecture _Education _Archeology _Engineering _Art _Entertainment/ _Commerce Recreation _Communications _Ethnic Heritage lCommunity Planning _Exploration! & Development Settlement _Conservation _Health/Medicine Date of Construction: c. 1920 "s" or "c" (S = significant, C = contributing). _Industry _Invention _Landscape Architecture _Law _Literature _Maritime History _Military _Performing Arts Government _Religion _Science _Social History _Transportation _Other Write a chronological history of the property, focusingprimarily on the original or principal owners & significant events.
