Site Description: Seven different ditch segments (D-l to D-7) from the East Bench Сanаl were recorded during а UDOT project for the upgrade ofHwy 89 in Mapleton, Utah. Although the segments were originally thought to Ье separate ditches. an interview with Fred Vincent ofthe East ВепсЬ Canal Со. and Мше Miner from the Mapleton Water Board revealed that the segments were part ofthe East Bench Сanаl System. ТЬе сanаl begins at the Spanish Fork River and flows north-northwest to Section 16 T8S RЗЕ. Тhe recorded ditch segments branch offthe сanаl to the east and cross under Hwy 89. D-l is ап eastlwest running ditch that crosses under SR-89. ТЬе ditch runs along the north side ofthe DeHaas property the east side ofthe highway and then into а pasture оп the west side ofthe highway. ТЬе ditch measures 6 feet wide at the top, 3 feet wide in the bottom, and about 2 feet deep. It is an earthen ditch, and the water passes under the road in collared concrete рјре with an interior dimension of 32 inches. Оп the west side of the road is а head-gate to divert the flow of water north, south, east or west. Тhe head-gate is located 5 feet west ofthe fence along the right of way, and is located оп private land. Concrete segments of an older head-gate are present near the newer one that is currently in use. Тhe older segments are in poor condition and are somewhat eroded. А more recent head-gate has been constructed within the area ofthe older cement works. ТЬе head-gate that is currently in use has cement walls about 6 inches thick and has slots built-in to accept pieces ofplywood or metal to divert the water. ТЬе area between the cement walls is about two sguare feet in size. Cement 'wings' Ьауе Ьееп poured to the east·and west to create а !УРе of cistem before exiting the head-gate. Тhe older head-gate segments to the north and west are used to create а small cistem area near the head-gates. ТЬе head-gate walls are about 30 inches high. Тhe ditch segment оп the east side ofthe road is also earthen. No gates or other features are associated with the ditch оп the east side ofthe road. Тhe ditch flows оп the west side ofthe road in а northlsouth direction for about 200 meters and then it is piped and buried. оп D-2 is directly north of2400 South. It is an earthen ditch measuring 8 feet wide at the top and 4 feet wide in the bottom, and about 26 inches deep. Тhe ditch runs east to west and extends undemeath the highway Ьу means of а corrugated рјре. ТЬе ditch extends to both the east and west for some distance. Within the right-of-way , the ditch extends from the east fence to the west for 11 .5 feet before entering the galvanized рјре and crossing under the road. After passing under the road, the ditch is exposed for about 23 feet before passing under the westem fence. Оп the west side ofthe ditch within а pasture, there are various concrete "gates" that are designed to irrigate the pasture directly north of the ditch. Although the ditch segments near the road are earthen for about 1оо meters, both the east and westem segments are concrete lined in the fields to the east and west ofthose nearest to the right-of-way for the highway. D-3 is а ditch that extends under SR-89 in а NE/SW direction through а corrugated galvanized рјре. Although the sides ofthe ditch near the highway are earthen, they are concrete lined оп the private land after passing under the right-of-way fence оп both sides ofthe highway. Тhe ditch is 9 feet wide at the top, 4 feet wide at the bottom, and 2.5 feet deep. ТЬе cement segments outside the highway right-of-way are U-shaped and of concrete, measuring 64 inches wide at top, 12 inches wide at the bottom, and 18 inches deep. Оп the east side of the road, the ditch comes in from the east along а property linе and then tums south and runs parallel to the road оп private land for about 600 feet from the north. It then tums to the southwest and crosses under the fence line and into the right-of-way. Тhe ditch is open in the right-ofway оп the east side for about 20 feet and then enters а galvanized рјре and crosses under the road. ТЬе ditch exits the рјре side ofthe road and is exposed in the right-of-way for about 30 feet before crossing under the fence onto private land. Various cement 'spouts' are built into the north side of the ditch that allow for the irrigation of а field to the north ofthe ditch. ТЬе ditch continues оп to the southwest and it seems likely that it joins with D-2. оп the western 0-4 is an eastJwest running ditch, 10cated along the southern property line of 1985 South (east side) and 1990 South (west side). Тhe ditch is а flat-bottomed V-shaped ditch that is lined with concrete. It is 4.5 feet wide at the top, 14 inches wide in the bottom, and 2 feet deep. ТЬе water passes under the road through а galvanized рјре. А large cement pad has been poured оп the east side of the road covering the east end of the рјре. Тhe pad is about 3 feet wide and 15 inches high. About 6 feet of open ditch are exposed between the fence оп the east side and the concrete pad that protects the culvert. Approximately 24 feet of open ditch are exposed оп the west side within the right-of-way after exiting the рјре that runs under the road. During the field check, the owner оп the east side of the road was in the process of removing the cement lining along the portion ofthe ditch than runs through the south end ofhis yard. 0-5 crosses under SR-89 at 1600 South (Марlе Road) and then extends to the north оп both sides ofthe highway for approximately у2 тНе until it is buried and piped. Various portions оп both sides ofthe road have been buried, it is likely that the other ditch segments ф6 and D-7) that were noted оп the survey further to the north are connected with this ditch. Тhe ditch crosses under the highway directly north of 1600 South. Тhe ditch measures approximately 6 feet wide at the top, 2 feet wide at the bottom, and 33 inches deep. It crosses under the road Ьу means of а cOlтugated, galvanized pipe that is about 3 feet in diameter. Head-gates are оп both sides ofthe road that allow the water to Ье diverted to the west or north. Тhe east side head-gate is located оп private property and appears somewhat older and more weathered than the gates to the west. Тhe head-gate оп the west side is 10cated mostly оп private land with а 2 foot segment ofthe concrete walls within the right-of-way. This head-gate is more recent than the one оп the east, and the cement walls are about 6 inches thick. Тhe walls measure about 30 inches high and the cement walls fan out to the west, while slots are built in to the cement walls to the north and the east to alter the flow ofwater. ТЬе head-gates оп the east side ofthe road are located оп private Iand. ТЬе ditch segments running paralleI with the road оп the west side vary in depth fi"om 2 feet to more than 6 feet in depth, wblle the segments оп the east side are more uniform and are about 2 feet in depth. 0-6 is an earthen ditch 10cated near Alvey Drive, wblch extends to the west of SR-89. ТЬе ditch crosses under the blghway and runs west along Alvey Drive. It crosses under the highway in а somewhat diagonaI direction and then proceeds north for about 22 feet before turning to the east and passing out ofthe right-of-way and into а privately owned field. Тhe ditch measures 4 feet wide at the top, 2 feet wide at the bottom and about 22 inches deep. Оп the east side ofSR-89 is а cement-fi"amed, corrugated рјре. Directly opposite, оп the west side ofSR-89, is а cement Ьох with а metaI grate оп top. From the east side, the distance fi"om the corrugated рјре and the fence is about 12 feet. оп the west side, the concrete Ьох is adjacent to Alvey Drive and the blghway. Water comes into the Ьох fi"om the south through а рјре and then drains into а ditch that runs to the west fi"om the Ьох. Broken head-gate pieces are located оп private land to the east ofthe road. It is likely that D-6 is another portion ofD-5. 0-7 is а small segment of а ditch that paralleIs the road оп the east side and is Iocated about У. тНе north ofMaple Street (SR147). It is Iocated directly north of а house at 450 South, directly across fi"om the southern property line ofthe LDS сhшсh along the blghway. Тhe concrete works are not within the right-of-way of the road. Тhe segment consists of ап old weathered concrete Ьох with а metal grate оп top. Concrete head-gates are built with the Ьох to adjust water flow fi"om the north, south and east. ТЬе Ьох is located west of and adjacent to the head-gates. Both the north and southern ditch segments that feed into it are buried and run through galvanized corrugated рјре. ТЬе rectangular concrete Ьох measures 30х60х67 inches deep. There is ап 18 inch corrugated рјре оп the west wall of the Ьох for water to drain through to the west. ТЬе concrete for the head-gates is about 6 inches thick and the concrete walls extend for about 6 feet in а north/ south direction. ТЬе east branching ditch has since been filled in as onlyan old broken рјесе ofplvwood exists between the sIots to the east with grass and dirt pushing through the cracks. Тhe east side of the Ьох has an opening that is approximately 30 inches wide to allow water in fi"om the north and the south. No evidence of а ditch exists оп the west side ofthe road. It is likely that it has since Ьееп piped and covered over. Тhis segment is not within the right-of-way . 23. National Register Status х... Significant _ Non-significant Unevaluated Justify Тhe East Bench Canal has been detenmned to Ье significant and eligible for the NRНP as it provides а significant source of water to the area for irrigation purposes. Тhe canal systems in Utah have been а major factor in the past settlement of various areas of the state. Although some of the head-gates are more recent. the cement lined ditches and older head-gates provide important information about the early engineering ofwater systems in the state. The majority ofthe segments within the right ofway have been altered in some fashion either with concrete or pipe. as well as new head gates. While the canal as а whole is eligible. the segments are genera11y sесопdщу feeders off the main line that provided irrigation water for agricultura1 use~ Тhe segments genera11y retain integrity of location. while the other aspects have likely been compromised to vщуiпg degrees. 24.
