The day was to have been a milestone for the family. Frank Snyder and his wife have lived in their 100year-plus-old adobe home for the past 22 years, said their daughter Jenel Snyder. Jenel, her fian~ and her two children, her two brothers and her parents were living if) the home. Frank Snyder has been at the University of Utah Hospital for the past five weeks after being burned at work. Snyder was holding a metal guide wire for a crane when the crane hit a power pole. Snyder's arms were so badly burned they had to be amputated. Snyder lost his right ann above his elbow and his left arm half way up the forearm, Jenel said. "He was taken ofT the respiratdr today, just before we found out about the fire," Jenel said. She and her two children were with her father and mother, Vickie, at the hospital when the fire happened. "They had put the plug in so he was able to talk again and then 1 went out to call my sister to tell everybody that they had taken the. respirator out and that he was talking and she told me that the hO.llse was burning down," Jenel said. She' immediately went into her father's hospital room to tell her mother what was happening. "She's not doing well," Snyder said. "She's just not doing well. And my father was on so many drugs, we're not sure he understands what has happened." Jenel's fiance, Brock Jenkins, and her two brothers were asleep at the home when the fire began. "I was up late working on getting the house cleaned up so we could put up a Christmas tree and 1 woke up this morning with smoke all in my lungs," Jenkins said. "My whole room was full of smoke." Jenkins heard one of his fiance's brothers yelling that the house was on fire. "I didn't have time to. get my clothes on, 1 just had to run out of the room," Jenkins said. "The fire was coming up too fast." Jenkins and the brothers were able to rescue the family dogs before the flames forced them from the home. One brother got on the roof with an ax and tried to chop out the fire while the other two men tried to get water out of the frozen garden hose, to no avail. "We tried to get the animals out, "Jenkins said, "but the cats, frogs and iguana died." The fire originated from a wood-burning stove that overheated, said Lehi Fire Chief Dale Ekins. The adobe home was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived. "The house is a total loss," Ekins said. "We estimate the damage at $135,000. This is another pretty bad blow for a family that already had some problems." The family was using the wood-burning stove because the furnace was not working, Ekins said. "I talked to (Frank Snyder's) brother and he said he had been worried about how to get the furnace and pi umbing and other problems fixed before his brother came home from the hospital," Ekins said. "No one was injured in the fire, but now their house has burned down." "One week before Christmas and we've just lost everything," said Jenel, in tears. "I don't know what to do, I just feef so helpless. We've lost everything." "I ran out with only my britches," Jenkins said . "We've lost thristmas for the kids." The family will stay in a cousin's apartment temporarily. The American Red Cross - is also assisting the family, helping them with clothes and other immediate needs.
