Use continuation sheets as necessary: The Jacob Cox House was constructed ca. 1883 and is a Utah Century Farm. The house is a Georgian style, and a combination of the Central Passage and Cross Wing types. The Central Passage, or I House, was the house form of choice on successful farms in all parts of the country . 1 Central Passage characteristics include: end-wall chimneys, a symmetrical facade and classical styling. The house is also identified as a Cross Wing type, as there is an ell on the rear of the house which was built at the same time as the front house, has the same gable height, and the footprint resembles a 'T'. Characteristics of the Georgian style include a symmetrical facade, side gables, and low pitched roof. The foundation material is sandstone; the walls are stucco over adobe bricks, the roof is corrugated metal and the soffit and fascia are wood. The windows appear to be the original 2-over-2 wood double hung. The front porch on the west elevation is a concrete slab, with a corrugated metal shed roof which projects from the house just below the sills of the second story windows. The front porch columns are simple turned wood, with Victorian filigree at the cornice. It appears that the front porch was added on sometime after the house was built in 1883. The north elevation has a one story shed roof addition which was built into the rear north ell. The exterior is drop or novelty siding, the roof is corrugated metal, the window is a 2-over-2 double hung wood, and the door on the east side appears to be original to the addition. The half gable on the east elevation of the addition has a Greek revival style cornice return. According to the current owner this addition was built in approximately 1930 by Jacob Cox's son, Jacob G. Cox. 2 There is an addition on the south elevation which appears to have been built in two parts. This addition was built into the south ell of the cross wing, but extends out further south than the south wall of the house, and further east than the east wall. The first floor of this addition appears to be plaster over concrete masonry units. The windows are a mixture of 1-over-1 and 6-over-1 double hung, and sliding aluminum. There is an exterior door on the east elevation. The second floor of this addition is plywood on a balloon frame. The windows on this floor are sliding aluminum. The shed roof is corrugated metal with a very low pitch and wide eaves on the south elevation. The addition on the north is sympathetic to the historic house, the addition on the south is not. Outbuildings There is a root cellar to the rear (east) of the house. The root cellar has a concrete block addition on the south side, and appears to have been converted into an apartment. There are four wood sheds to the north and east of the house. 1 Carter, Thomas & Goss, Peter. Utah's Historic Architecture, 1847-1940. 2 Personal interview with Nyle Cox, September 8, 1997. Although popular in the East and mid-west at the end of the nineteenth century, the Georgian style central passage was not common in Utah. The Cox farm is one of the rema1n1ng family farms which dotted the landscape of Utah County in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The house was built and the land originally farmed by Jacob Cox. Today (1997) the house and farm continue to be occupied and run by the Cox family3. The property on which the house is built was purchased in 1882 from Alonzo D. 4 Rhodes who also owned the property to the west of the Cox farm . Jacob Cox was born in August 1837 in Green County, Illinois. He came to Utah with his parents, 3 Personal interview with Nyle Cox, September 8, 1997. 4 Abstract of Title, Utah County Recorder's Office, Provo, Utah. Daniel and Mary Ann Frantom Cox. Jacob married Elizabeth Goodson in March, 1860. In the autumn of 1870 he then married Julia Snow. Julia was the widow of Jacob's brother Joseph, with whom she had one child, Joseph Jr .. In 1872 Julia had Jacob's son, William Snow Cox. Jacob Cox was a farmer, an irrigationist and a road builder. He was a veteran of the Indian War, and a member of the LDS Church in Lehi. Cox built the house at 7932 North 8350 West ca. 1883 for his wife Elizabeth and their family. The house directly to the east of this was built by Jacob Cox for his second wife Julia and their children. Julia and her children moved to Canada in the late 1880's.5 In 1926 the house was deeded to Jacob's son Jacob G. Cox and his wife Martha. In 1964 Jacob and Martha deeded the house to their son, Nyle and his wife Laurel. The home and farm are currently owned, occupied and run by Nyle and Laurel Cox. The farm was listed in 1996 as a Utah Centennial Farm, as the land has been farmed for over 100 years by the same family. 5 Personal interview with Nyle Cox, September 8, 1997. For many years he filled various public offices and was president of the Utah Senate at the same time his father served in the legislature-the first father/son to serve in this body simultaneously. After retiring in 1960 he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to do research for a book on the Utah Expeditionary Force (Johnston's Army). Before this project could be completed, however, he died on 31 January 1961. Betty Fowler (1920- ) Rebecca Ann (Betty) Laursen, exuberant Lehi advocate and supporter, was born and educated in American Fork. When she married Lehi man Don Fowler, she moved to Lehi, where she has spent a lifetime raising nine active children, including two sets of twins. Betty's love of literature and writing are rooted in her childhood. Both parents were book lovers. On cold, dreary nights during the Depression's darkest hours her father Bill recited poetry to the family. Betty committed to memory such epics as Little Orphant Annie and The Congo. Well-read and possessing an infectious sense of humor, Betty became a popular book reviewer at literary club and Relief Society meetings. Her critiques of Erma Bombeck's works and portrayals of U.S. presidents were among her favored presentations. It did not take long for Betty's writing talents to be discovered. She wrote roadshow scripts and narration for numerous church and community programs. One of her favorite endeavors was narrating Christmas programs performed by the HiLos, a group of local women vocalists. She was an integral part of this group for many years (see chapter 50). Her writing skills and charisma resulted in her being hired by Russ Innes, publisher of the Lehi Free Press. Assuming the duties of Margaret McMillan, Betty made her journalistic debut in 1971 and in 1989 is editor of the local newspaper. Numerous writing awards have come Betty's way. The Utah Women's Press Association honored her with a first-place prize for her feature stories. She also has garnered several other first-place awards from the Utah Press Association for her weekly column "You Better Believe It." Betty's writing material is gleaned from her girlhood experiences during the Depression, along with the trials and joys of being a wife and mother. Her down-toearth humor and unaffected manner of delineating life in Lehi have won her a substantial following of "You Better Believe It" fans who eagerly await the weekly delivery of their Lehi Free Press. Betty has been an active civic and education-minded citizen. She, along with JoAnn Brown, city councilwoman, and Dale Price, committee chairperson, were members of Lehi's Bicentennial Committee. Bandwagon CULTURAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS 355 Park resulted from their efforts. Selected as Grand Marshal of the Lehi Roundup parade a few years ago, Betty has also been recognized by the high school as an honorary alumnus because of her untiring support of Lehi High School activities. She also had several daughters in the local 4-H program and served as supervisor in the organization for five years. Unbeknown to many, she is probably the only female in Lehi to serve as scoutmaster, albeit temporarily. A bunch of rowdy Troop 2 boys drove their leader into early retirement. Scoutmistress Fowler stepped in and performed yeoman service until a male replacement could be secured. Betty Fowler's newspaper writing is an outgrowth of her desire to proclaim Lehi's virtues to its citizenry. When asked why she doesn't retire, she emphatically answers: "Where will they find someone who cares as much about Lehi as I do!"-a sincere and accurate portrayal of one of Lehi's foremost writers and citizens. Kay H. Cox (1934- ) Kay Hanson was born on the Evans farm on Saratoga Road on 26 February 19~4. Her parents, Thelda Evans and Robert Gordon Hanson, were divorced shortly after her birth and she spent much of her early years in the care of her grandmother, Beulah Evans. Her mother taught her to read at an early age and she wrote her first book as a first grader. She was very proud of her efforts, particularly her skill in hyphenation. Her teacher, not a lover of word breaks, was not impressed and said that she should not make black marks at the end of a line. She nearly flunked her first year in school, not only because of the hyphenation disagreement, but also because she refused to color horses green and cows pink. She knew what color they were and was too opinionated to comply with her teacher's wishes to color them otherwise. First grade problems aside, she went on to graduate as valedictorian of Lehi High School Class of 1952. That fall she married Nyle M. Cox and started her freshman year at BYU. After one year of schooling she dropped out to start a family. Six children and eighteen foster Indian children later she returned and graduated from BYU in 1978. At this time she began working on her first published book, Without Reservation (Bookcraft, 1980), a warm account of her family's experiences raising Indian children through the LDS Church's Placement Program. She has written many short stories (none as yet published), and has won prizes for her poetry andphotography. She works as a substitute teacher in Alpine School District, likes to hike, backpack, and slide down waterfalls. She also enjoys working with clay, sculpturing stone, sewing, painting, and generally enjoying the world. EJ E1 EJ .. : I - ~ ~ - i • • ~ t .. - T· j +-t -- . .A - . ~ .
