Constructed of brick, the church has a g~c appearance. The brick is a tan cream color, with a high cement foundation. The front of the building faces west, gable end to the street. fhere is a tower extened to the south. The tower is square withcastle like features. The enterance to the building is through the west face of the towers two double doors. Above the door is a round wheel window. A wheel window is also on all four sides of th tower. The origina l enterance and main floor was approximatily six feet above the ground. In the center of the front wall is a large stained glass window. fhe window is a gothiC s~yle center pOinted window. ~here is a small half circle window near the peaK of the gable. fhe eaves are pro j ecting, and the cornice is a varied brick. the cornice fallows the gable up like stairs. ~here are three windows in the base of the churches front. The north side of the church has fou~ windows ~n the foundation. fhe main floor has three large pOinted gothiC windows~ith a brick keys toned lintel and a plain sill. ~he entire wall is divided into three sections by brick extensions. The south side of the church originally had two gothic windows, adouble door enterance and the tower extension. The roof is steeply gabled with shingles. The fourth ward is well proportioned and has a massive appearance. The interior of the original building was divided into two floors, the basement floor and the main floor. The basement is a half basement, with large windows which let in good ligJlt. Divided into three rooms, two small and one large room, the large room was used for cultural a d recreational events. dances and ward parties we~held here . They also divided the the large room with curtians for sunday school classes. The enterance to the basement was a narrow stairway from the main tower enter ance . The main floor consisted of enterance and chaple. The chaple is where reglious services are held. You enter at the rear south side of the chaple. The floor sloops toward the east. The large windows let in a generous amount of light. The stained glass window is at the back of the chaple. The side windows are a frosted glass. The speakers stand is at the center of the front of the church. Two double doors led outside just south of the speakers stand. fhe buliding was heated by a large pot belly stove. The pews are a dark stained pine. The Chaple has a peaceful feeling about it and is very simple. There has been many change to the Lehi forth ward over the years. The first change a large cuitural hall and offices were added to the south side of the church, the original enteranceras removed and lowered , in its place a new enterance • that really doesnot fit the gothic style of the fourth ward. A new stairway was built to the basement. The basement was divided into clas srooms. The windows on the south side were bricked up and the double doors were made to enter a hall way. The chaple was changed by adding a new podium. Also the pot belly stove was removed and a new coal furnace was added. another addition added a new kitchen, library and relief society room to the back of culture hall. Recently a new relief society room and baptismal font was added to the church . fhe grounds were enlarged anc new park= ing lot was built. The original 'building has a very simple beauty. ~he most unique feature is the stained glass window its shades of color truly inspire the beholder. m m z -i :::0 c: n -i o z PERIO D (Ch ec k One Or More a s Appropria t e) o o SPEC I FIC DA TE( S ) Prehistor ic H i storic 0 Agriculture KJ Archi tecture 0 0 0 0 Art Commerce Communications Conservotion STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE o tU ~ 0:: t- z w w 17th Century !Xl 18th Cent ury 20th Century 19th Century , (Ch e ck One or More as Appropriate) Abor iginal z o o 16th Century (ll Applic abl e and Known) AREAS O F SI G N I FICANCE 0 0 o o Pre-Columbian : 15th Century 0 0 0 0 0 Educati on 0 Pol iti co I Engineering ~ Religion/ Phi _ 0 0 0 Science I ndus try Invention landscape Arch i tecture 0 0 0 Literature Military Music o o Urban Planning Other ( Spe c ify) losophy Sculpture Socia IIHuman itorian 0 0 Theater Transportation The Lehi fourth ward is a esc, lent exam~le of the early arch i tecture in the Lehi area. ~he forut h ward build, ng was constructed in 1912. ~he i~inscribed above the front enterance. This church waS buil t mostly the local church members and is very typical of other mormon churches built about the same time in Utah County. I was unable t o find the architect of the church from local sources. The city of Lehi has keep very poor records and has not saved the building permits. Utah County records have know more than the a~ess and oringinal owner and the date of constr~c tion. iecause of these factors I was unable to find dates of additio~ and other vital information. istimating these additio ns, first around 1940, the second late fifties, and the final addition five or.tix years ago . This building has served the people of no r theast Leh~for many years as a social and reglious center. The mormo~ h ave taken very good care of th is church and its in ,pood shape. The fo r th wards architecture is very typical of early mormonstructures and not ~ny are left in this area from this period . It would well worth preserving this fine example. The furture of the fourth ward chaple is not quite certian. The church is considering building a new chaple to the south of the culture hall and destroing the original church . They are worried about the foundation j of the old church. This seems ~ to be several years away at this time, hopefully they will come to see the heritage of this fine old building. The only oringinal mormon church still in use in Lehi.
