Use continuation sheets as necessary: This circa 1888 Classical Revival home has two additions, both dating from the historic period of significance. The original floor plan appears to be a central passage type with gable ends, and narrow~plain friezes adorn all of the gable ends. The first gabled addition, probably built shortly after the original construction, runs parallel to the central passage and is attached to the rear. This addition juts out approximately five feet beyond (south) the hall-parlor, with a gable end in the middle of the back facade. The second, less significant, addition is a shed roof, frame enclosed porch with gable end facing the rear at the south end. The entire house, along with the foundation, is covered with asbestos "clapboard" siding. The asphalt shingle roof is in good condition throughout. A yellow brick corbelled chimney that sits atop the ridge of the rear facing gable has minor mortar lores. A brick dugout root cellar with frame gable is located southeast of the house with a frame lean-to entry. The front (west) facade of this elongated hall-parlor house features three tripartite windows and a door. All of the windows have either three or six vertical muntins in the upper portions of the panes. An aluminum awning sits above the central window and door. All of the windows have the original wood fixed sashes, frames and sills. Bushes and trees obscure much of the front. There is a recessed entry at south end of the front facade in the first addition. An aluminum awning-roof supported by metal poles, and attached to the gable end of the hall-parlor, covers the ell. The south facade begins with wood sash double-hung window below the awning-roof. The rear gable end has a broader roof pitch than the front and has a central wood sash window. The side of the shed porch addition is dominated by a ribbon window, and its roof is tucked below the eaves of the rear gable addition. The ribbon window surrounds the porch addition. The rear (east) facade is dominated by the long gabled addition with rear facing central gable. The shed porch at the left has an off-center door facing the east. Three windows are located to the right, beginning under the gable. The side of a small shed addition (approximately two feet deep) on the north side of the house can be seen on the rear wall. Its roof is tucked under the rear eave and spans the north gable end at the eave line. The north facade features two gable ends, the rear being slightly recessed. The small shed addition makes the rear flush with the front gable end. The rear gable has a centered door under the shed roof, while the front gable features a central double-hung window. James Madsen purchased this property in Lake View in 1886. 1 At the time the parcel consisted of almost eight acres of land. James was born January 7, 1861 to Peter and Caroline Madsen, early settlers of Lake View. Caroline was the third of Peter's five wives. He married Priscilla Stephensen on January 25, 1888 in the Logan Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church), and he probably built this home for his new bride. James earned his living by farming. Like most of his neighbors, he raised hay, grain and sugar beets, as well as keeping dairy cattle. Lake View farmers typically had a house on several acres and a much larger farm plot nearby, and this was probably the case for Madsen. James served as the secretary-treasurer of the Lake View Ward deacon's quorum of the Mormon Church, as well as ward clerk, home missionary, and president of the Genealogical Society of Lake View. His biggest interest was wildlife, and he was considered a local authority. The childless couple sold an acre south of the house in 1902 to the Lake View Ward, so the church could build a dance hall. That building served as the social center of Lake View until the early 1920s when it was torn down. In 1908, James' half brother Hyrum "Hy" Madsen received the title to the property. He built a store in front and attached to the home, and named it the Lake View Mercantile. For many years the general store sold gasoline (from a tank, not pumps), kerosene, dry goods and candy.2 Elvin Bunnell, who has lived across the road since he was born remembers gas being sold for nineteen cents per gallon and kerosene costing fifteen cents. The Madsens sold the property to Thomas Johnson in 1913. He and his wife Rosetta ran the store for a number of years, but business was slow and continued to decline. They finally closed the mercantile3 and turned their focus to raising chickens. The Johnsons probably removed the storefront shortly after closing. They remained in the house until 1953, when they sold the property to Frank and Alice Waggoner. They lived in the house for one year before selling to Dell and Cora Kesler. The Keslers purchased the home in 1954 and stayed until their deaths. Dell died first, and Cora passed away in 1996. The estate sold the home to current owners Elvin and LaWana Bunnell, who use it as rental property. 1Lake View is the historic name of the unicorporated area of Geneva Road between Provo and Orem. 2Interview with Elvin and LaWana Bunnell by Polly Hart. June 7,1999. 3Elvin remembers the Johnsons closing the store after struggling for years, but he has no memory of when that occurred.
