Leavitt 1731 South 1400 Eas t Salt Lake City , Utah Dear Grandma: Was de1ighted to receive the picture of all the Aunts and you . Aunt Charity particularly looked lovely . Where will they settle now? St . George? Our big news here is the kid's ~ptism . Maybe Dad told you . They were both baptized and confirmed April 24 by Mel Cardon , a family friend we knew when we lived in Tripoli. It was in the Arabian Gulf , and looked very much like the New Testament days, with all that blue water , white sand dunes, and the kids in white robes, the local robes the Saudis wear . Elder Hunter was here that day; we had a big Branch party afterwards . Henry was there, but not too cheerfully . I fear he will take a lot of convincing. Three of our most acti-ve LDS families are leaving this summer and I feared the Church would dwindle here , but evidently more are moving in--nobody to Abqaiq, however . d The Ras T8 nura people had a branch party last week and I took the kids--Henry is on the rig . It was one of those things, a half-day party J* for us-- the bus to Koba~where we shopped and spent the morning , the noon I bus to RT ; the party l asted until 9 p . m., when we hitched a ride back to Dhahran where we stayed overni te td th some members • Stayed the next day for church, then for dinner, then for supper • so we missed the bus to Abqaiq, and they drove us back that night . We were exhausted, but sure had a good time . It's the first time I really had a chance to talk to some of those people ; usua:11y we just go to church and then run to catch the bus . I had to take a potato salad to the party , which is crazy in this heat , to lug it around for hours, it would have poisoned everybody . It was okay in the morning early, as far as Kobar , when I figured that I would just have to think of something . The first place we went into I ran into an LDS lady standing there waiting for her husband, so she took the salad (they had a car. Tha tts the big problem here--women are not allowed to drive a car). She took the salad to a LDS family who live near Kobar ; they put it into ~heir frig . Later , when the discovered that they couldn't attend the party, they called another family at the Saudi air base to pick it up and bring it in! It sounds nutty, but that's the way it is here . Maybe you just have to be nutty to live here • ••• We nre all well ; the kids doing well in school . Peter takes French, but enjoys the swimming class and science bettor . Allison has a lot of homework~ (~ must socialize at school . I have 15 piano students . ... Henry ' s job is quite demanding; he comes in completely bushed every time. He nearly had a blow-out last week,~ me screw or little gadget didn't Jfortuna tely , they got it shut in before it ignited . Guess it's the mental strain and the responsibility of what .£.Ould happen, and in this case almost did. It's his job to be responsible, if anything goes wrong , no matter who did it, it's his fault . On J an. 2 o f this year I had a long-dis tance telephone c all from Clau dia Bushman 9 25 Oak Street , Belmont , Ma ss, 021 78--askin g if I would consider flying out to Boston and meet with the ir group pn June 2. They have a group of young women who want to pu t out their own Mormon Women ' ~Magazi ne, since the Relief Society Magazine is dis co ntinued . They 're naming thei r s THE WOME N'S EXPONENT 2, after the one that was publishe d or edited by Emmeline B. We arrived in Chicago o n schedule , where I had t wo hours to cha nge planes. I almos t needed the m, too, for the distance see med like a 10-mile cross-co ~ntry run . I made it OK , though, and arrived in Boston at 5 p.m., to find Claudia there to meet me. 1 The Bushmans live in Belmont, a suburb of Boston. Some 5,000 LDS live in this area, and Br. I forgot to say that her class was at the Universi ty of Bostono That ni gh t we went to a concert pu t on b y the ~irst six gra des of the Belmont schools . They ha d an orchestr a and a wonderfu l singin g gr oup i n which two or three of her youn g er children particip ated. Her youngst, by the way, is only two, and she leaves him in the care of a baby-sit ter on campus for the time o f her class. On Frid ay Va l or ie and Gloria Hafen pi cked me up and took me out to Valerie' s home in New England . The y g ave me the most wonder ful tour of the area of Emerson, Thoreau, Louisa M. The countrys ide is so g reen and beautifu l, the iris all in bloo mo On Friday ni f, ht Claudia had just the ten g irls wh o are working on the new WOMAN'S EXPONENT venture in for a social visit. My t alk was on Sunday evening at the chape l in Be l mont, with a supper precedin g it and the talk in the chapel. A good cro wd , 123, someone said. I was well received indeed. On Monday I went with Claudia to her class at the University, and answered questions of the class embers re garding Pioneer Women in t he Wes t . It was a stimulating experience, for which I received $ 25.OO--later. Claudia was always most considerate and helpful. On Tu es day Gloria picked me up at Belmont and took me to her home to stay ove rni g ht. rrhe y , too, have a wonderful home right in the midst of the fo r est . Her husband has duties at the College there, so we didn't se t out for B~ltimore until nearly noon, but we had a won derful drive through miles and miles of gra~s and wooded country. Arrived at the home of Everard Cox to find the family gone to graduation exercises in which their daughter "Elizabeth L." was ~raduated, late afternoon. The Hafens didn't stay because he must be at work the next day, and it would be such a long, hard drive, six hours at best. I must stay here Tuesday and Wednesday and get my ticket changed from the Boston terminal to the Washington D.C. one , which took the grea ter part of the day. We also visited the Temple in D.C., which is al most fini shed . Sister Cox just Had to go up and touch i t--rub that f' inished marble o f which she vias so proud. I was content to observe the signs and view it from a little distance. We had a good flight west, in spite of some thunder showers under us. Stopped at Chicago, where nearly all the passengers got out. Those remaining were mostly LDS. The National 1JO:t-"'.AN OF THE YEAR was on, a Mrs Mariott whose husband is a brother of the man of "Hot Shoppes" fame. DeVere & Lela McAllister from Logan we re at the station to meet us brought me ho me, came in and had a root-beer float, and went right on home. Sister Cox does not count that home; she is really eager to get on to Dixie. I had to smile a lit tle when she was trying to persuade them that she would be OK with Maria n Prince, "And Aunt Mary Leavitt can come over and visit with me, too'J she said. And of course she could. Now I must settle down and get b ack to this "Quicksand & Cactus" deal. I al most re gret letting the Dialogue people have that interviewe I talked on tapet and they have cut it to fit their space. Now they come with cameras to take pictures, from which the artist _will make line drawings of me for the illustrations. What a Mesa! I hope fine and dandy as usual . I have just finished reading the Vol. VIIINo. 3/4 issue of DIALOGUE . I started in the front and kept reading until I reached the end and then I found a notation that coming in the next issue of DIALOGUE will be an "in depth" interview with you conducted by Davis Bitton and Maureen Ursenbach . I am really looking forward to reading that . I ' m not too good at names but it seems to me that Ms Ursenbach has something to do with the preservation of Utah landmarks etc. When '/ was this interview conducted? My last correspondence from you was the letter re the copy of the article on the Coalville Tabernacle taken from Vol . VIII No. 2. I thought it a good article in that it showed why so many actions have been taken by the Church in this regard and I agreed with it. Especially when it more or less compared the new buildings "esthetically" to McDonald Hamburger STands or Colonel Sanders Chicken places . That is about as much character4 as most of the new Church buildings have . I am thankful for DIALOGUE as it gives me encouragement to realize that I am not the only member thinking the way I do on many subjects . For instance, in this last issue the interview with "Social Scientist" and his comment about testimony bearing when he said "something within me is violated each time a personalf blandly says 'I know rr' when I know damn well he doesn't". This is one of my pet peeves . I would liA°k, to say ~I believe · and 11 I hope ' but I can't say "I know". Anyway, I am always stimulated by this publication and I certainly can't say the same for "BYU STUDIES." I do agree with you, if and when the Church tears down another such building - i.e. Spring City (I haven't seen it and I must) I am through~ Not with the doctrines of the Church but with the ones in charge. I just finished reading a book on the Settlements on the Little Colorado by someone named Peter_~,Pn I believe. It is well done, I thought, and I couldn't helpfthink as I looked at his footnotes and references ; and there were many in connection with your work, what a wonderful thing you accomplished. First of all in your bravery in stating the truth in the Mountain Meadows work and your beautiful book on John D. U!e . And then all the work , .you have done in editing diaries etc. Again I say , you were the o'.. forer~nner in presenting the history of the Church and the early people in fact: and truth, with no covering up . Now we are reaping the good works sown by you . I don't mean. to be "flowery" - it is not my way . But I am stating the truth and one of the greatest things that happened tom~ and Rulon was to get to know you and then it was easy to love you . You are not only a great historian and writer, but a very warm, sensitive and honest human being. By the way, am I right when I believe that LeRoy R. Hafen i s your mother's brother? I am wondering about buying the book "The Joyous Journey of LeRoy R. and Ann W. Hafen". I would be especially interested if he is your uncle . How is your mother these days ? We were up to St . George over t he fourth of Jul y and for the following week . Didn't see her.) and I guess Karl and his family were away for most of the time . We did see him the latter part of the week . Again I must say we do enjoy seeing those little Brooks children playing up in the house and yard that belonged to and was built by their great-grandfather. I am glad they are there. We did so enjoy knowing you and Will when you were there that it almost seems a sacrilege to us not to have a Brooks family in that lovely home. I hope Karl and his family can be there for a long time and we do hope very much that you will be back to stay sometime, when we get there to stay . I know how busy you are so don't feel the need to answer this letter unless you have a moment. I would be interested to know when your "in depth" interview took place before my n ext issue of DIALOGUE comes and I guess that won't be until last fall or winter. Los Robles Ave., #320 Pasadena, CA 91101 December 10, 1974 Dear Juanita, I or four weeks seems all the I really want have been trying to write you a note for three - ever since I got my last copy of Dialogue. It chores of everyday living get in the way of what to do . I want to tell you how much I enjoyed reading that interview with you. There were many things in it which I had never heard before and I was delighted with it. As soon as I got the book in the mail I read it immediately and then when Rulon came home I reread it to him and he felt as I did . We also enjoyed the sketches of you . However, we felt they didn't do you justice. We liked the last two of your head. Anyway it made us more proud of you than ever~ We have been reading in the Washington County News about your visiting the Old Folks Gettogether in Mesquite or Bunkerville and also about your mother's b~rthday celebration . What a remarkable woman . You certainly come from fine stock. You owe a lot of your greatness and what you have achieved from your ancestral stream~ Not to take anything from you, of course . We just went up to St . George this past weekend . We haven't spent as much time there this year (or last) as we usually do or want to do , but we went back to Upstate New York this fall and also a year ago last June to visit with some of my aunts and uncles who might not be around too many more years. One couple were celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary this fall . My idea of heaven on earth would be to live full time in St. George and go back to the Finger Lakes Region (where we had a cottage on Canandaigua Lake all my young years) for a couple of months in the summer . Hal Schindler has done a longer version of this review and plans to have it published in a scholarly journal. The book he's talking about is the same one Faun Brodie reviewed f or the publisher and sent to you along with that fine letter we were looking for at your house the other day. If you recall, Faun's review was really scathing--she turned the author every way but loose , saying he had plagiarized your work, lied about it, etc. Hal would have been more vitriolic in the TRIBUNE, but he told me he didn't want to sound too controversial or people would buy the new book just to compare it with yoursl He says he is saving the really bad stuff for the long review. You'll notice he suggests that people buy your book instead. Good for him! Mom and Dad say they had a good visit with you the other day and that you seem to be getting settled. I hope the house isn't too full of people for you to do some work on the last few small pieces of Quicksand and Cactus. (I think I gave you a list, didn't I?) Let me know how it's going. So that we can finish the book in spite of your move, I will plan to come and see you in St. George after I've done some editing of the huge pile of manuscript I already have. The Press will pay for my trip, and we will also pay for you to come to Salt Lake when it's necessary to work on the book here. While you are packing and unpacking, please be on the lookout for some of the things you've written and haven't given me. Some of them may be in note or outline form, but we really need to be locating everything we're going to use. You might mention this to Karl, or anyone who is helping you go through written things. (I certainly hope no one inadvertently throws anything important away!) I'll send you a current table of contents when I get one typed. McMurrin Assistant Di MRS. RULON W. GREGORY 234 SO. FIGUEROA ST., NO. 1935 LOS ANGELES, CA 90012 May 10, 1977 Dear Juanita, I hope this finds you daily improving from your operation and in good spirits. Rulon and I thought I hope we didn't tire you out you looked great! with our visit that Sunday. I have made two copies of the John Pulsipher diary. I kept one for myself and am returning to you the original and one copy. I have decided to do it separately, in case one was lost. So I am also sending this letter in duplicate, one copy with each copy of the diary. As you can see some of the pages just didn't reproduce well. However, with a little eyestrain I think those can also be read. I have enjoyed the diary very, very much and appreciate being able to have it and make copies of it. Ihope they decide to have it published at Logan. I will give you a call when next we are in St. George You are very dear to us to see how you are doing. and we are very interested in your welfare. Much love, as always, 571 Rogers Circle St George, UT 84770 May 18, 1977 Dear f ~Cfi-,?U· .' I am sure you realize that Grandrrother Leavitt looks forward with great anticipation to her 100th birthday, and in particular to the family reunion that is to be held in July. One of the projects that she hopes to live to see canpleted is a snall history of her life (along with that of Grandpa Leavitt) in printed form. This letter is in the way of a request (assignment?) to each of you as her children and as those who know Grandma and Grandpa best. Would you please send me a copy of the FOIL names of each of your children, their birthdays, and names of their spouses. Then continue on to the grandchildren (full names, birthdays, spouses) and great-grandchildren, if any. Also, if you have any ranembrances of home life in Bunkerville, impressions of life or people with whom Grandma and Grandpa interacted, or any story or incident of interest, please jot them dovm and include them. I do have copies of the more conman family photos; however, if any of you have pictures that are very old or unique , please let us borrow them for a while. Write your name on the back and I'll see that they are returned to you. Thank you for your help. I think that Grandma will be pleased with our efforts. How about a dead-line of MAY 30? An hour or two at the typewriter or with a pen and pad will fill the assignment. Remember President Lee's motto: ''00 IT NOW'' !
