THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SALT LAKE CITY July 13, 1967 SUMMER SCHOOL Dear Juanita: Not until I read your letter in this morning's Tribune did I know of the passing of Stanley Ivins. Thank you for the fine tribute to a noble human being. Only yesterday I was thinking of calling Stan to tell him of the lecture which Dick Poll will be giving on Sunday at Park City, as indicated on the enclosed program. Other lectures in our Park City series which may be of special interest to you are scheduled on successive Sundays by Jack Adamson, Milton R. Merrill, and Bowman Hawkes. If you happen to be coming to Salt Lake City any time during the next three or four weeks, you may be interested in attending one or more of these events. Pat joins me in sending you fond greetings and best wisheso Sincerely yours, Mrs. Juanita Brooks St. George, Utah American Fork,Utah July 13, 1967 Mrs.Juanita Brooks 3225 South 3690 West Salt Lake City,Utah Dear Juanita: I wish to thank you for your kind tribute to Stanley as published in this morning's Tribune. I am very proud of the research work Stan has done and I consider your letter recognizes the fact that some kind of public recognition was well deserved. All rmambers of our family will be grateful to you for your thoughtfuln ess in writing this letter. There is no one whose tribute I could appreciate more. Stanley admired you as a sound and capable scholar and writer, and I certainly concur in this estimate of your courage, honesty and ability. I have often regratted the lack of opportunity for me to visit and become better acquanited with you . As a Dixieite I have always felt a sense of pride in your accomplishm e Sincerely yours, P. Brooks: Your letter in the Tribune Forum the other day was an eloquent tribute to one of our closest friends, St an Ivins , and we w.ant you to know we agree heartily with everything you said . Stan's sudden passing was a shock to everyone who knew him. It was utterly unbelievable to us . e were talking together about an episode in Utah history; he quietly took a deep breath, relaxed and was silent. We didn I t know he was dead until we got word from the hospital, and even then we couldn't believe it . We first met Stan about 45 years ago . For the past ten years or so we saw him at least once a week, sometimes oftener, as we got together to play Scrabble . There was usually some discussion about Mormon history-. • en though he was steeped in little-lmown but highly interesting facts, he never brou @lt up the subject himself . He would answer questions but would not sta:rlt any discussion . re suggested many times t hat he write the histor-y- himself from his vast knowleqge, but he was content to leave that to others. We are all glad to know that the notes, books and papers he assembled over the years -vrill go to the Utah State Historical Society where they will be available for study by anyone . They comprise a rich storehouse that must not be allowed to lie unexplored and unused . As old friends of Stan we express deep personal appreciation to you for your thoughtful letter in the Forum. Most sincerely, rie Tipton P . S. You won •t mind, we're sure, if we give Stan 's sister Flore nce (1.Jrrs . Gorgon T. Hyde) a copy of t his letter. George, Utah 8L770 Dear Mrs . Brooks: It was delightful to be able to talk with you the other day, and we are very happy that you have agreed to come to be our speaker in November . I believe that Saturday, November 18 , is our best date . Is that agreeable with you? I am sure that we can handle any problems regarding transportation . I have checked with the bus people, and this schedule seems to be the best: Greyhound Leave st . George 10: 55 am Arrive Beaver 1:30 pm For your return trip : Leave Arrive Beaver 1:25 pm,, st . George 3: 55 pnt-, The people here told me that the bus that leaves St . George at 10 : 55am stops at Cove Fort if there are passengers that want to stop there, so we could meet you at Cove Fort and bring you to Richfield. I don't believe that a southbound Greyhound bus stops at Cove Fort, but we could take you either to Fillmore or t·o Beaver . We would , of course, pay for your transportation and take rare of your other expenses. This also includes expenses for your husband if he would like to come with you,or any other companion . I am thrilled with the success that our Sevier Valley Chapter has had thus far . People really seem to enjoy our programs . Our meetings are dinner meetings, and this one will be held in the ~anquet room of the Rainbow Cafe , at 7:30 . Please let me know if November 18 is a satisfactory date, and if the transportation sugge stions are satisfactory. B st wishes to you . s~ .i t . U-Y 1 D ·a , , '"; e 1 1967 t ,' ? r . I hope you will recall our visit as it was very enjoya ble to me to mee t you . As you know, I am very intere sted in collec ting anythi ng connec ted with the early period of Church Histor y, partic ularly as is pertai ns to Joseph Smith. Also, the doctri nes of the Church and their develo pment are intere sting to me . There are many enemie s of the Church who claim that the doctri nes of J. Smith evolve d, but I have discov ered that many of. these so-cal led "evolv ed 0 ideas were actual ly discus sed among the brethe rn much earlie r than they were before the public and the genera l body of the Church . So if you in your search es come upon anythi ng that may help in this attemp t to unders tand the early teachi ngs of the proph ets, I would be very gratef ul. I know there are many items in early journa ls of the settle rs that have bearin g on isolat ed ideas, but I have learne d that if you get enough of them togeth er, a patter n soon emerge s . Thanks to Mro Hoover, . we have the priviledge of living in the blue Carribean for t6e next two - th re e years . After vacationing for the month of J une in Utah , we returned home t o Hackensack and received a call f _rom the office saying that we were transferred to Puerto RicoQ ~o h~re we are-and we*re in love with it already. We hurri e.ly packed our belongings and left New Jersey 0 July 15. Our plan2 t rip down was delightful, mainly because a ll the tourist class S f.:. '1ts were takenj an d we had to come first class . We had a h~rd time choking down the filet mignon and cornish hen they served for lunch! What a shock it was to step off the plane and feel the humidity and be met by hundreds of Puerto Ricanso Our fr iends, the Mi llers, who were al r eady here , met us at the airport . We c\.L.'. pl led into the Mille ' s car, and were . giean a grand tour of San Juan. With all the honking taxis and bu~tling traffic, we thought we were still in New York. We then went grocery shopping, which was a reB,l experience for Jeannie, with everyone speaking Spanish. However, she soon felt a t home with Bordens Milk, an · Gampbe llqs Soups on the shelveso San Juan is very Americanize d, lflfith chain sotres like Sears, Gran d Union, Woolworths and othersj but the :: - ic es are qu j_te a bi.t higher than the States . Af t er shopping we came to our hotel, which is right on the beach. Palm trees, whit e sand, warm blue water., blue skies, and bright sun. Our room has a kitchenette, lots of closet space, balcony, air-conditioner, and a maid who makes the beds and cleans every day. We' 11 probably bE~ living here for about 1.-2 months until our furnitu•re arrives and we fin d a place to live. Kay leaves for work at 6:30 a.m., and it takes about 15 minutes to the office. Brian has four or five playmates at the beach all the time. Our car finally camej and we have been house hunting for t he past two weeks. The houses here are quite different with concrete wall$, flat roofs, terazzo floors, fancy grill work (to keep unwanted visitors, both animal and human, out), and no gla ss panes-jus t ad~justable shutters and screens. The yards are -small, but are filled with nice tropical fruits and flowers, such as coconuts, bananas, mangos, and papayas. Everything here is ·i.. " d . green because of the rain. If you recall after I left your home, I was on my way to Cedar City to meet him, as this was the best plane connection s he could make in order to meet me out there . He was so ~erry that he¥ didn't have the priYilige of meeting you and Mr . Brooks as he like myself had heard Mr . J . K. Fancher speak of you . But from Cedar City, we drove on East and into Bryce Canyon. The drive was wonderful ••. such beautiful pountry. All through the country, mountains and caynons I couldn't keep from thinking of John Dr_ Lee . We drove into Pangritch and enquired about Lee's grave. They told us at a filling station where the cemetery was and we drove out finding it without difficulty ; it was past the middle of the afternoon , and my husband anxious to move on, finding a Motel before night. As we drove into the cemetery, I thought .. well I'm sure in for a long hunt, although I had remembere d; the picture of the stone (in your book I think) ••. and that the stone stood upright as tall, or maybe taller than most headstone s . ,We started~lo oking ..• and within about 10 minutes at the most a car drove up and stopped; a woman got ~ut .•• she seemed to be even walking toward us .•. so I yelled to her if she knew where the graveiof John Dd Lee might be. She said yes, and pointed t3ward it;, which was only a few feet from where she stood. Come to find out, she had married into the Lee family and her children were kfue descedent s of Lee. She told us quite a bit¥ ¥about the family ••• khat Brigham Young had left ;ity lots to John D. Lee , or deeded them to him (in Salt Lake City) ••• but they had never been able to recover them. Had you heard anything on this. It seems to me that if they ever change the historica l marker (at the rocks, grave site) ••. or if the people in Arkansas should ever erect their own monumentk which I think they should)¢ then theyshould clear Lee's name .•• especially the way they have it marked up now . They could just say, Mormon Fanatics under the pressures of war with the U.S. and Indians and then John D. Lee, Mormon Leader, Pioneer, Zealot, paid with his life for the Crime. At least it could be explained in this light and if ~ourists~a nted to go on, reading further about it there is always the history books. I told the woman ~t the cemetery, I surely had feeling and compassio n for his family and how¥ unjust I felt it was. She saidk some of the teachers even in the grade schools in that area were still blasphemin g not only Lee's name, but his family (telling the story the the "old way" she put it) . So evidentl y during recentk years , they are telling the story differen tly, adn no doubt your book, and all your research before you wrote the book has cleared up an awful ~ot . But someway on the ~¢iii i monumen t, historic al marker , there could bet changes; most certainl y improvem ents . The one which is down therejtJ / you can ' t even see it after you get down there . I ' m ashamed to admit it, but I haven ' t writt en Mr . Fancher since we have been back . Have been so busy with so much mail to get¢out through my work in Astrol ogy . My husband says we will just drive up to Harrison and see him, but I want to wri~e firsti . Anyway I think when we go up there I will also go to the Times (Harriso n}: ... the city Newspap er and talk to someone there •• see ifi somethin g can ' t be started in the way of raising funds for QUr own Arkansa s Monument . After all this is the duty of¥ Arkansa ss people , themselv es •.• and e s p ecially the people up in that area . Their Congress man should get after it; also another man I met~tou rist), I didn ' t even get his name ••• but we were discussi ng it (this was on my return to Cedar City ••• to ~et my ¥i¢~~:,1.Ji/ husband ); he was from Missour i . He seemed to think the question of a monument should be brought up , or to the congress man from Missour i; and if there was people from Illinois in the train , then the congress men from Illinois . Ss I don ' t know just h ow to go about it, not all togethe r ••. but it wouldn ' t take¥ long to raise the funds . The people back here who know¥ a bout the crime, in full ••• have as much disgust for the church in the fact they used Lee as a Scape - g oat . I ' m sure they would hold the same compass ion for the Lee Family and all the injustic e which has been placed upon them . I want to thank you so much for inviting me int o your home; your hospita lity ••. and taking the time to talk to me . I hope we can keep in touch with each other • .• and please remembe r me to your husband . I just wish wet could have visited more . If you are ever in Arkansa s • • • be sure and~ come see us . We will have so much to tell Mr . Fancher when we see him •.. as we will be going up there after it gets cooler. We love to drive up there , scenery in the fall, leaves; mountain s up around Harrison , so will go then if not sooner . ~y husband spent (and I) a month in Old Mexico right after Christm as last year ( mid January into mid Februar y), this year. He wants to go back just before Christm as this year ; spend Christma s in Mexi c o City .. and then go down the East Coast, Veracruz and maybe into Yuctan; be gone about 3 months, but I don ' t know whether we can be away from home that long or not . Being away from home takes me away from home and my clients and this isn ' t good . Bu t ¥ maybe I would have more time to write .•. do research on the history I have . I meant to ask you while I was there what hours during the day, do you do your best writing . I can ' t seem to write only after midnigh t and the wee hours of the morning . Gratefully, Juenit· Brook'S Route 1, Box 367 Fa l lon, Nevada November 13, 1967 Dear Mrs . Brook , Recalling that at one time I told you that John Young, father of Brigham, had married one Hannah Brown, I herein quote: Biography of Lovenzo Dow Young, by James A. Little page 132. Ut. Hist Quarterly, 1946. •~ I leBve the following on record regarding my father's family: My father, my stepmother, Hannah Brown , my four brothers and six sisters, with their wives and husbands , were all members of the Church, carried out their professions and lived like true Saints , with the exception of two brothers-in-law, of a family of twentythree~ twenty-one of them, if I pass away in the faith, will have lived and died Latterday S:: 1 ints . My hslf-brother, Edward , was baptized in his childhood, but in his ripe manhood withdrew from t r1e Church. Since the notorioa Nathanie}J • Brown w~s a baptized member of the churdh, was Siiel tered in Nauvoo ·after, the Hodges nad murdered itf!e Miller and his son-in-law Leiza in Montrose;' and then allowed to go with the original 1847 Pioneers t6 Utah~ isn't it more than likely he was a son of Hannah Brown, John Young's second wife? My summer was spent doing some music research at BYU; during spare time the library was combed for data on the C8 lifornia projecto I enjoyed a couple of sessions with Eu ene Campbell, who privately is quite as critical as myself of some of the policies carried out by the original founders . Also nd spent a half day with your protege, Luce, who is doing research for his PhD in Provo. He's quite confused regarding whether to believe his eyes or his emotional conditioning; logic and creed ha~.:..mixed him up considerably . ' hen the QUEST FOR EMPIRE first came out, I wrote Klaus J. Hansen a congratulation. He filei the letter away without c1nswering . Last week, he apologized for nis oversighto The point I wish to make is that he wrote me that you had mentioned my work on California as the intended goa l of Bro . Brigham, a point which I made in my letter to him 9 and sugeested that when Brigliam fled the U.S . deputies at Nauvoo, he had every intention of setting up the Empire in Californiao He showed unusual interest in that possibility. Dr. Campbell was surprised t~know that an indictment was out for the Twelve for counterfeiting, i.e . BY, 'v•l . Richards, John Taylor, P.P .. Pratt, cfson Hyde and Tt1eo 'l urleyo ~ifhat surprised me most was that Stanley s. Ivins, in a l l his meticulous research, had no note on the venture in his files; I examined them shortly a fter they came into the Archives of the Historical Society . I'm enclosing a Zerox copy of an interesting letter on the ma t tero 1 While In Balt Lake I twice called at the Bellvedere and found you were out. There are other details I like your opinion on, items I can 't think of when I write . One is who was the other Battalion man mentioned in connection with Levi Fifield as conspiring to capture (kidnap) Rockwell's daughter? you told me; it has slipped my memory . B st wishes, r.:. How you ever got so m~ch from those dim pages is a miracle . I still wish I could have been there when y ~u and Lula went over it . The reason I am so long answering is because I had intended to get a gppd copy of the diary as we interperated it for you to loo k at. But I am not a good typist and there are so many things to stop me that I am sending you my old copy to l ook at and you may return it . There are many places where y ou got words we didn't a nd some the other 1i,ray about but mostly there is a question . Hope you did not misunderstand me over the phonerbout th at one spot . Sometime 1 111 get your thoughts on that part . As you willnotice we just left that part out sinc e we could not understand 11 who 11 or "V "hat n and it s eemed so crude and unlike anything we had he ard of grandfather . Now, Juanita, I kn TN these things do not come free and I vant to do my share on the expense . Please let me know what it~s. 11 e do so appreciate your efforts . Pe have some other things we woul d like to have c Jpie s made from . I told you a , out the old lett ers . They were written in Kirtland in 1830-31 in an effort to convert the sister nd family vho were left in Vermont . The family neve r did join the Church but they did save the letters . Eunice got them from a descendent who ha s done so much in tra cing ancest ors but had no particular interest in the message of the letters . Thanks again for your interest , ef f ore and ability . Best wishes to all the fami l y for a Merry Chris t mas and a Happy New Year . Love, Bt .
