Description Ataxia of Friedreich is caused by a mutation in the gene Frataxin located in the chromosome 9q13. It occurs 1 in 30,000 cases in Caucasian population. The symptoms are progressive and start between 7 and 25 years of age. The ocular manifestations are a sign of progression in the disease.
