Davis The idea gained in the Editorial of this issue is that the general run of the CCC boys today were community parasites and would have become the criminals of tomorrow had not the CCC 1,aken them off the streets. These are the types of boys, says the Editorial , now found in the CCC camps. This means, to my estimation , that each of us could be considere d possible future criminals or bums if the Civilian Conservat ion Corps had not changed us into real fighting men with a desire to make an honest living. The author of the Editorial says that he has become more friendly and sociable and also more courteous since joining the Cs. Do you think that many young men on the verge of becoming bums and thieves would, afte only six months associatio n with other young men like himself, be ... come a great deal more friendly, sociable, and courteous than when he entered the Corps? When the CCC first began five years1·.agoi,1i t was true that the men were made up largely of destitute classes. You couldntt enter the Cs unless you were absolutely up against it. But now it is different . The larger share of the boys, at leas·;:; in Company 959, have gone to high school and have entered the Cs only because of lack of something better to do. I dontt believe that out of every one hundred CCC enrollees there is one who would have become a crimin2.l, or a bum had he not joined the Cs. It takes guts to enter the Cs and make something of ~oursel:f. The bums and theives haventt got t:hat something that makes a sticker. If you g o into the CCC with the desire to make good , you Yvill do so; but if you can{ t take the gaff, and if you go back home na failul"G 11 , you are a failure only so far as the Cor~s is conc ~ined, and not a failure in general. You may yet become 8U.ccessful in real life outside of the Cs. Wallace (F.D.) Brown:Rad ium weighs 20 jounds to the ounce. Hurst I~ Thyge rson: Dontt you he~r me tell you.
