Show Canyon - NHMU Project A project with EAE and CMI at the University of Utah Design Document By Zac Truscott & Brenton Walker Developed In: Contents Overview Title Description Design Goal Scope App terms Flow Attract Level Gallery Case Reveal Reset Art Style Mechanics Hardware, Engine & Technology Hardware Engine Looking Forward Overview Title Canyon "Adventure Begins" App (working title) Description The ‘Canyon' app provides a hook for children (7-10 years old) who enter the museum. The purpose of the app is to generate a specific goal/case for the user that will entice them to visit a specific area in which they have a targeted interest. The user approaches the screen and places their hand on it to activate the app. They are given 3 randomized ‘cards' representing levels in the museum. After choosing a level they are interested in, they are presented with 3 more cards of randomized observatories on that level. Again, the user is prompted to choose one of the 3 given options. After they have done so, they will be transitioned to a third and final ‘choice screen' which will display 3 randomized cases within the level and gallery previously chosen. After determining their selection, the app will generate a virtual badge and a scavenger hunt item, encouraging them to explore that specific part of the museum. Design Goal "Awesome toy to inspire young learners to guide parties through museum." The app is designed with the intent of engaging the target demographic who visit the museum. The 3090 second experience aims to give the user two things: 1. A virtual badge is generated based on the pictures that the user chose in the selection screens. This is reminiscent of a personality quiz. The intention of the badge is to give the user a sense of personalization with the app. The badge might be that of a scientific field of study such as a paleontologist, petrologists, ecologist, anthropologist, etc. This way the user will feel like their choices showed them the type of scientist they are. 2. The level and gallery of a case which they're encouraged to find. This is known as the scavenger hunt item. The scavenger hunt item is the item that the user is encouraged to find which is generated from the pictures they chose in the application. Scope The app will contain 3 core areas. 1. Attract Screen 2. Selection Screens 3. Reveal App terms ● ● Attract Screen: The screen displayed on the app when it is not in use. Will display a palm print encouraging the player to place their palm on the screen to initiate the app. Choice Cards: The individual choices that make up the 3 selection screens. There will be 2-3 cards on any given selection screen. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Flow level Screen: The top-most selection screen. The level screen randomly selects 3 levels from within the museum. Gallery Screen: The middle selection screen. It displays 3 randomly selected observatories based on the previously selected level. Case Screen: The final selection screen. It displays 3 randomly selected cases from the selected gallery. Virtual Badge: A virtual representation of the user's path. This is generated based on the choices the user makes on the case screen. Selection Screens: the 3 screens containing the Choice Cards. Each screen is decided upon by the previous screen. Scavenger Hunt Item: The case which the user is directed to find at the end of the experience. This is specific to the choice in the case screen Scratch Off: The player will be required to virtually ‘scratch off' a layer in order to reveal the scavenger hunt item. Attract The attract screen's intention is to draw users to the app. The screen will contain the title of the app in conjunction with a hand print, inviting the users to place their hand on the screen to initiate the program. Upon placing their hand on the screen, the app will advance to the "level" screen. Level The first screen the user sees after initiating the program, the level screen will allow the user to choose one of three randomly chosen levels by touching the ‘card' Gallery The gallery screen will further break down the user's choice. Depending on the level the user chose in the previous screen, this will list up to 3 random observatories within that level. Case The last choice screen, case, will be the final choice for the user. This will be explicit and ask the user to select a specific case from within the gallery which was previously chosen. Reveal The reveal screen will display the generated virtual badge first. After the badge reveal, the user will be asked to reveal their scavenger hunt item by ‘scratching off' the overlay. They will then be given the general location for the item. Reset On the reveal screen, after X amount of time, the app will reset back to the attract screen. An option to reset the experience through a button will also be available. Art Style See associated style guide documents Mechanics 1. Attract Screen a. The user places their hand on the screen. The screen ‘analyzes' the handprint and transitions to the first screen 2. The app generates a badge and item based on user choices a. At the reveal screen, the app will display a virtual badge, generated based on user choices from the selection screens b. At the reveal screen, the app will display a scavenger item, generated based on user choices from the selection screens 4. If the app is left for X amount of time, it will reset automatically a.
