Aptly named, "Modern Neuro-Ophthalmology" is the most innovative, contemporary educational resource available in our field today. I commend Drs. Prasad and Rizzo for stepping outside the traditional mold of neuro-ophthalmology textbooks to deliver a unique product steeped in the same fundamental rigor we all appreciate, while elevating the standard regarding versatility and ease of access to the information presented. Their use of a variety of multimedia features including dozens of well-chosen figures, narrated videos, linked references, and annotation capabilities, allows the reader to experience neuro-ophthalmology in a more organic and interactive way than ever before. Volume 1 appropriately focuses on the fundamentals of visual neuroscience necessary to establish a strong foundation in clinical neuro-ophthalmology. The afferent and efferent systems are covered in Chapters 1 and 2, respectively, with well-placed clinical correlations sprinkled along the way. In the afferent chapter, the authors masterfully narrate a story which begins with the basics, and effortlessly progresses to a more in-depth coverage of subject areas ranging from photoreceptor psychophysics to retinal ganglion cell physiology to higher order visual processing. The discussion moves from front to back Books Received: J Neuro-Ophthalmol 2017; 37: e5 through the visual system in a very logical fashion, providing the reader with a robust presentation of these fundamental principles. Similarly, the chapter on the efferent system lays the necessary foundations by beginning with the overarching supranuclear processes governing eye movements, and subsequently exploring the infranuclear pathways. Their concise and clear writing style allows the authors to achieve an impressive degree of granularity and detail, while connecting the reader to the big picture. This resource takes full advantage of the electronic features the format affords, with descriptive annotated figures and excellent videos. The result is a rich and personalized learning experience, which the reader can tailor to his or her own level. As the authors state in their introductory remarks, this textbook is well suited to serve a broad audience, including medical students, residents, fellows, and all providers who deal with patients presenting with visual disorders. Visual neuroscientists will appreciate the authors' coverage of the histology, anatomy, and physiology which form the foundation, and will benefit from the organizational framework laid out by the authors. As with any written work, the source matters. The pairing of Dr. Prasad, a brilliant and passionate leader of the next generation of neuro-ophthalmologists, with Dr. Rizzo, an established and innovative giant in the field, has resulted in a novel and welcome approach to teach neuroophthalmology. As the authors continue working on their subsequent volumes, I fully expect this resource to set a new standard for neuro-ophthalmolgy textbooks in the years to come. Vivek R.
