Title Special Olympics Notebook
Creator McDowell, Brittany J.
Subject Special Olympics; Resources
Description This paper discusses the culmination of a Special Olympics procedure and instruction notebook, an Integrative Service Project completed as part of the Service-Learning Scholars' Program. The notebook allows for sustainability of the University of Utah Special Olympics Team by providing a resource for student leaders that can also be adapted for use by other teams in the state. Information regarding athlete registration and records, coach credential requirements, volunteer coordination, transportation, and fundraising recommendations are included. Disability and syndrome summaries for the most frequently seen intellectual disability diagnoses in Special Olympics athletes were assembled. They included the medical pathology or genetic basis for each disability, physical limitations, behavioral issues, and training methods to provide volunteers with what to expect and how to best work with these individuals.
