Description Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a budding eukaryotic yeast which has a complicated life cycle . The life cycle includes a homothallic and heterothallic cycle and the yeast may be haploid or diploid depending on its position in these life cycles. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a single cell organism which divides by budding fission. Both sexual mating systems and genetic inheritance are known for this organism. This species is often abbreviated in the literature as S288c with a post superscript to indicate wild type or mutant characteristics . The wild type strain is abbreviated then as S288c+.
