Reinventing religion: A rhetorical analysis of Christian group's environmental discourse

The fate of the environment has become an important topic of discussion in the past three decades. Many rhetorical and environmental scholars have found that attitudes towards the environment are shaped by the way people talk about nature. The Judeo Christian worldview has often been blamed for the prevailing disrespect that many humans have of nature today. This study examines how one group is attempting to expose a segment of Christians to a broader scope of ideas about nature. A rhetorical analysis shows that through carefully considered persuasive strategies, the Christian publication Green Cross is providing a narrative from which evangelical Christians can act and think in more integrative terms about the environment. Such an analysis is an important step towards understanding how beliefs about the environment are formed.
